Use a screenshot to show what a page looked like under specific capture conditions—not to prove that Google indexed it or that it will appear in search. For a few pages, capture the relevant state in Chrome and label the image with the URL, date, viewport, and any state that affects what is visible. For repeatable captures, use Puppeteer; use Lighthouse when the report also needs audit results and loading visuals; use Search Console’s live test when the question is what Google retrieved.
Choose the capture method that answers the audit question

Choose based on capture scope (viewport, element, full page, or loading sequence), how consistently you need to reproduce the viewport and page state, whether capture must be automated, and whether the report needs audit output. A screenshot documents appearance; pair it with measurements or inspection details when the finding is about status, fetching, indexing, or structured data.
Capture a useful screenshot in Chrome
For a one-off audit, open the target page in Chrome, set the viewport and page state relevant to the finding, then capture the viewport or the element you need in DevTools. Chrome’s capture reflects the state visible at that moment. If a banner, open menu, signed-in session, or expanded panel matters, make that state explicit rather than relying on a later reader to infer it.
- Open the exact page being audited and note its URL.
- Set the device or viewport that corresponds to the finding. Keep it consistent when making a before-and-after comparison.
- Set the relevant state: for example, accept or dismiss consent, sign in if the issue requires it, or expand the affected content.
- Capture the viewport or relevant page region. If the finding concerns content below the fold, use a full-page or element capture instead of implying that a viewport image shows the whole page.
- Save the image with a readable page identifier, capture date, and device or viewport, then place it beside the report finding with a short caption explaining what to notice.
These are practical reporting conventions, not a Google-prescribed evidence format. Record whether the image is a viewport, full-page, element, loading-sequence, or Search Console live-test capture.
Automate full-page and element captures with Puppeteer
Puppeteer’s screenshots guide documents Page.screenshot() and ElementHandle.screenshot(). The example below captures a full-page image after navigation. Install Puppeteer in a Node.js project with npm install puppeteer, save this as capture.mjs, and run node capture.mjs https://example.com. Replace the example URL with the page under audit.

The navigation wait shown here is a starting point, not a guarantee that every site’s meaningful content has finished rendering. If the page populates content after navigation, wait for a relevant selector or other condition before capturing and check the result.
Capture one element instead
To document a specific audit issue, wait for the target element and use its screenshot method:

Use Lighthouse when the image needs audit context
Chrome Developers’ Lighthouse guide describes reports covering Performance, Accessibility, Best Practices, and SEO, with controls for device, category, and audit mode. A Lighthouse report can be printed, copied, or saved. Its screenshots show how the page appeared as it loaded, so use them when loading behavior is relevant rather than treating them as a hand-picked final-state screenshot.
The Lighthouse CLI can output HTML or JSON. Its README documents --disable-full-page-screenshot to turn off full-page screenshot collection. For comparisons, keep conditions consistent: Chrome Developers warns, “This also means you cannot directly compare two Lighthouse audits completed on different machines.” Local load, extensions, and stored device settings can influence audits.
Show Google’s retrieved view with Search Console
When the finding concerns what Google can fetch or render, use URL Inspection in Search Console and run its live test for the URL. Google’s Inspect and troubleshoot a single page help page explains the inspection and live-test views.

Keep the live-test screenshot separate from a normal local browser capture: they answer different questions. Google says live-test data is less comprehensive than index information, and information from the live test is not used by Google for indexing. An “URL is on Google” verdict is not a guarantee that a page is currently shown to searchers.

Put the screenshot next to the finding it supports. Include enough context that another person can revisit the evidence and understand what it does—and does not—show.
- Page URL and capture date and time.
- Device type and viewport dimensions, where applicable.
- Capture type: viewport, full page, element, loading sequence, or Search Console live test.
- Relevant page state, such as signed-in status, consent choice, open menu, or expanded content.
- A concise caption naming the issue and the visible evidence.
For findings that depend on fetch behavior, indexing, status, or structured data, add the relevant measurement or inspection detail; an image alone cannot establish those facts.

Should I use a full-page screenshot or a viewport screenshot?
Use a viewport for issues visible in the initial screen and a full-page or element capture when the finding concerns content beyond it. Label the capture scope in the report.
