Use Playwright to route a browser through your organization’s proxy, open the site, and save a viewport, full-page, or element screenshot. You will need the proxy endpoint and any credentials or certificate instructions from your IT team; these vary by organization and cannot be inferred from a generic example. Playwright supports proxy settings at browser launch or browser-context level, and documents HTTP(S) and SOCKSv5 proxy types (Playwright network documentation).
What you need before you start
- The proxy server address and port, plus whether it uses HTTP, HTTPS, or SOCKSv5.
- Any proxy username and password, if required. These authenticate to the proxy, not to the destination website.
- Instructions for any organization-managed certificate authority or browser policy.
- Node.js and Playwright, installed through your organization-approved process.
Ask your administrator whether the destination site is allowed through the proxy and which browser channel is approved. Playwright’s documentation describes configuration options, but it cannot provide your organization’s endpoint, credentials, certificate authority, allowlist, or policies.

Install Playwright and a browser
For a basic Node.js project, install Playwright and its bundled Chromium browser:

If your environment requires a managed Chrome or Edge installation, follow your administrator’s instructions instead. Enterprise policies can affect Playwright’s ability to launch and control branded Chrome and Edge, and may constrain proxy settings (Playwright browser documentation).

Configure the proxy and capture a screenshot
The example below sets the proxy when launching Chromium, visits a target URL, and saves the visible viewport as screenshot.png. Replace the example endpoint and target with values approved for your environment. For a proxy that requires authentication, supply its username and password through environment variables rather than placing credentials directly in source code.

If it uses SOCKSv5, specify the server in the SOCKS form documented by Playwright and confirm whether credentials are supported for your setup. Avoid committing credentials to a repository or sharing them in logs.

Playwright allows proxy configuration globally for a browser or individually for a browser context. The launch-level configuration shown above applies to that browser. To scope it to a context, create one with a proxy option instead:

For an element capture, replace main with a CSS selector that identifies the desired element. If the page has delayed content, wait for a meaningful selector before taking the screenshot, for example await page.locator('main').waitFor(). When browser installation fails behind the proxy
Browser downloads are a separate network step from routing pages through the proxy. Playwright documents the following environment variables for installation scenarios (Playwright browser installation guidance):
HTTPS_PROXYroutes browser downloads through a proxy. Set it before running the browser installation command.NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTSpoints Node.js to a custom root certificate when an intercepting proxy causes a self-signed certificate chain error during download. Obtain the certificate and trust guidance from IT.PLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUTincreases the allowed connection time when the archive download is slow.
These settings address browser installation and download trust. They do not substitute for the proxy settings used by the browser when it visits a website, nor should you bypass your organization’s certificate or security policy.

Troubleshoot common failures
- The browser cannot connect: Check the proxy URL, protocol, port, and whether the endpoint is reachable from the machine running Playwright. Ask IT to verify access and destination allowlisting.
- The proxy rejects the request: Confirm whether authentication is required and that the credentials are for the proxy. Check for expired credentials or a different authentication method with the administrator.
- Certificate-chain error during browser download: If an intercepting proxy is involved, request the approved root certificate and configure
NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTSas documented. Do not disable certificate verification as a workaround. - Browser installation times out: Set
HTTPS_PROXYfor the download route and, if the connection is simply slow, raisePLAYWRIGHT_DOWNLOAD_CONNECTION_TIMEOUT. - Chrome or Edge refuses to launch or behaves differently: Enterprise policies may limit automation or proxy capabilities. Use an administrator-approved browser channel or ask the administrator whether a policy adjustment is available.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: First confirm that the page loaded successfully in the automated browser. Wait for the page’s actual content selector when rendering is delayed; a proxy block page is not the intended site.
Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Proxy routing adds a network dependency: navigation and downloads can fail or take longer if the gateway, authentication service, or destination route is unavailable. Use an explicit navigation timeout appropriate to your environment, wait for page content rather than an arbitrary long delay where possible, and save screenshots only after verifying the expected page is present. Full-page captures and pages with heavy or delayed content can take longer and use more memory than viewport captures. Keep retries bounded so a proxy outage does not create a loop of repeated requests. Playwright itself does not determine your organization’s proxy availability or access rules.
