On a Mac, use Safari’s Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode to capture a site at chosen viewport dimensions, in portrait and landscape, and at different pixel ratios. For a closer check of iPadOS rendering, open the page in iPad Simulator; use a physical iPad when actual-device behavior matters. Keep the capture method and dimensions with each image so comparisons are meaningful.
Capture multiple iPad-sized views in Safari
- Enable Safari’s developer features if needed. If the Develop menu is absent, turn on Safari’s web developer features in Safari settings. The precise settings label can vary by Safari version.
- Open the page and enter Responsive Design Mode. In Safari’s menu bar, choose Develop > Enter Responsive Design Mode. Apple describes this mode as a way to test media queries and dynamic styles across screen sizes. Apple’s Responsive Design Mode documentation explains its controls.
- Set the viewport. Enter the width and height you want, or drag the viewport edges. Use the same dimensions for each comparison set; rotate the viewport to capture portrait and landscape separately.
- Check pixel ratio when it affects the page. Resolution-dependent styles or imagery may change with pixel ratio. Set it as needed and record it alongside width and height.
- Capture and label each state. Use a filename or note that identifies the page, viewport dimensions, orientation, and whether the image came from Responsive Design Mode, Simulator, or a physical iPad. Keep the URL, browser state, and zoom consistent between captures.
Safari’s device presets are approximations, not exact reproductions of device rendering. Responsive Design Mode is useful for fast layout checks, but a desktop preview does not establish how every iPadOS-specific behavior will appear. Apple recommends Simulator for a more accurate preview; WebKit also describes the trade-off between quick feedback and fidelity. When to use Simulator or a physical iPad
Open the page in iPad Simulator
Use Responsive Design Mode’s Simulator handoff when the macOS preview is not representative enough. Simulator provides an iPadOS rendering context, but setup requires Xcode, and the exact way to save a Simulator screenshot may differ by installed version. Confirm the screenshot control or shortcut in your version before relying on it in a repeatable workflow.

Capture directly on iPad
When you need evidence from the actual device, open the site on iPad and take a screenshot there. Apple Support also documents Safari’s full-page screenshot option, which captures webpage content beyond the visible screen. Choose that when you need the entire page rather than one screen-sized view, and keep the distinction clear in filenames and comparisons. See Apple’s instructions for taking a screenshot on iPad.

Make comparisons repeatable
- Record viewport width and height, orientation, pixel ratio, and capture method for every image.
- Use the same URL, page state, browser state, and zoom when comparing sizes.
- Capture portrait and landscape as separate states; rotating changes the viewport dimensions and can trigger different responsive rules.
- Decide whether the goal is a viewport image or a full-page image before capturing. They answer different questions.
- For team reviews, make filenames descriptive, such as
pricing-1024x768-landscape-safari-rdm.png. This is a practical naming convention, not an Apple requirement.
