One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchFor a repeatable Playwright screenshot, pass animations: 'disabled'. If you need a particular moment in the motion, leave animations enabled and synchronize the capture with the state you want. A screenshot is a still frame, so capture timing matters whenever an animation is running.
Choose what the screenshot should show
There are four useful goals, and they call for different approaches:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Stable baseline: suppress motion so an animation’s timing does not change the screenshot.
- Finished state: wait for the relevant animation or application state, then capture.
- Intermediate frame: trigger the animation and capture at a deliberately controlled point.
- Interactive inspection: replay or scrub a supported animation in browser developer tools.
Also decide whether you need the whole page or just one element. These choices are separate: a stable capture can be page-wide or element-specific, depending on the tool and method.
Playwright: capture a deterministic still
For a regular page screenshot, disable animations in the screenshot options:
#1 Best Overall
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', animations: 'disabled' });
Playwright documents this setting for CSS animations, CSS transitions and Web Animations. Finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion; infinite animations are canceled at their initial state for the screenshot and resume afterward. That means “disabled” does not freeze every animation at the exact instant the screenshot call begins. Use it for a stable baseline, not for an arbitrary intermediate frame. See the Playwright page screenshot API.
Playwright: stabilize visual regression assertions
When using Playwright’s test runner, a screenshot assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots to match, then compares the last one:
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot();
The screenshot assertion’s animation default is disabled. This helps prevent animation phase from introducing noise into a visual comparison. The API is part of Playwright Test; it is not a standalone browser-page method. See Playwright’s screenshot assertion documentation.
Capture a chosen moment while an animation runs
If the screenshot should show a particular intermediate state, leave animations enabled. Regular page.screenshot() allows them by default. Trigger the animation, then synchronize capture with an application state or animation event that corresponds to the desired frame.

There is no universal wait duration: animation length and the meaningful capture point depend on the page. A fixed sleep may appear to work but can become unreliable when rendering or page behavior changes. Prefer waiting for an observable state your application controls; use an explicit delay only when that timing is genuinely part of the test. The supported screenshot options are listed in the Playwright API reference.
Capture a page or element with Puppeteer
Puppeteer documents Page.screenshot() for a page and ElementHandle.screenshot() for a particular element. Choose page capture for a full-page or viewport image, and element capture when the subject is one component. See the Puppeteer screenshots guide.
Rank #4
Element capture can involve bringing the target into view. Check the resulting viewport and page behavior: scrolling can affect sticky elements, lazy-loaded content or other state relevant to the image. The Puppeteer screenshot APIs provide the capture mechanism; the timing still needs to match your intended animation state.
Inspect and scrub supported animations in Chrome DevTools
- Open Chrome DevTools and select the Animations panel.
- Open or trigger the effect you want to inspect so DevTools can detect it.
- Use the panel’s replay and scrub controls to inspect the animation timeline and state.
The panel supports CSS animations, CSS transitions, Web Animations and View Transitions API animations. Chrome’s guide says requestAnimationFrame-driven animations are not yet supported by the panel. For those, use an application-level or browser-automation approach suited to the animation. See Chrome DevTools’ Animations guide.
Quick choice guide
| Need | Approach | Important detail |
|---|---|---|
| Stable Playwright image | page.screenshot({ animations: 'disabled' }) |
Finite animations finish; infinite ones are canceled at their initial state for capture, then resume. |
| Repeatable Playwright visual assertion | expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() |
Requires Playwright Test and waits for two consecutive matching screenshots. |
| Specific animated moment | Keep motion enabled and synchronize capture to the desired state | No universal wait duration fits every animation. |
| One element in Puppeteer | ElementHandle.screenshot() |
Check viewport and page effects when the element is brought into view. |
| Hands-on timeline inspection | Chrome DevTools Animations panel | Does not support requestAnimationFrame animations, according to its guide. |
Troubleshooting inconsistent captures
- The animation looks finished instead of mid-motion: the Playwright screenshot used
animations: 'disabled'. Keep animations enabled and wait for the intended state instead. - The same test captures different animation phases: regular screenshots allow animation by default. Disable animations for a stable baseline, or synchronize to an application state for a specific moment.
- A screenshot assertion still does not represent the state you want: the assertion’s default disabled-animation behavior targets repeatability, not an intermediate frame. Use a regular screenshot with controlled timing for that goal.
- The Animations panel does not show the effect: confirm the effect is a supported CSS animation, CSS transition, Web Animation or View Transition. The documented panel does not yet support
requestAnimationFrameanimations. - An element screenshot changes layout or appearance: check whether bringing the element into view scrolled the page or triggered lazy loading, sticky positioning or other viewport-dependent behavior.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. This captures a still image of the requested page; use browser automation when you need to coordinate capture with a particular animation event or intermediate state.
