To capture a VHS tape with OBS, connect a VCR to a compatible USB video capture device, connect that device to your Windows PC, and add it in OBS as a Video Capture Device source. The VCR’s analog output cannot go straight into OBS: the adapter and its Windows driver must accept the VCR’s video and audio and provide DirectShow output.
What you need before opening OBS
- A working VCR with composite RCA video and left/right audio outputs, or S-Video if both the VCR and adapter support it.
- A USB analog video capture device with matching inputs, audio capture, and a Windows driver that supports DirectShow. OBS’s Video Capture Sources guide identifies DirectShow driver support as necessary on Windows.
- The right cables: connect composite video to the matching video input and the red/white audio leads to the left/right audio inputs. Some devices have input-specific restrictions; for example, the UCEC manual says not to connect composite video and S-Video simultaneously on its device. Follow the manual for your adapter.
- Enough free disk space at the OBS recording destination. The sources do not establish one universally best recording container or bitrate for VHS, so test your chosen OBS settings and destination before recording a whole tape.
Check the specific adapter’s Windows version support, analog input standard, audio behavior, and OBS compatibility before buying. OBS’s certified-device list describes a particular certification program; it does not certify every adapter that can appear as a capture source.

Connect the VCR and configure OBS
- Install OBS and the adapter’s driver. Follow the capture-device manufacturer’s driver instructions. On Windows, the driver must support DirectShow output for OBS to use the device.
- Connect the video and audio. Run the VCR’s composite video and left/right audio outputs to the matching adapter inputs, or use S-Video plus separate audio if both devices support it. Connect the adapter to the PC, then start tape playback when you are ready to check the signal.
- Add the capture source. In OBS, use the Sources dock and select + → Video Capture Device. Name the source, then select the capture adapter from the Device list in its properties. The OBS Quick Start Guide also recommends checking that the intended source is selected.
- Confirm the picture. Start the VCR and check the OBS preview. Use a resolution and frame rate offered by the device; an unsupported choice can leave the preview blank.
- Set the video standard and format. If the device’s properties include Configure Video or a video-standard control, choose the standard that matches the tape and the adapter’s supported inputs. PAL and NTSC are not interchangeable settings to copy blindly from another device’s example. Follow your adapter’s documentation and check the resulting picture.
- Check the audio meter. With the tape playing, watch the OBS Audio Mixer. Depending on the adapter and driver, audio may be part of the Video Capture Device source or exposed as a separate Windows audio device. Inspect the source’s audio mode and device selection; add the hardware’s audio device separately if its driver requires that.
- Make and review a short test recording. Confirm the preview, audio meter, recording destination, and settings. Record a brief section, stop, and play back the file to confirm that it contains both picture and sound and that they remain acceptably synchronized. OBS recommends a test recording before the actual capture.
Record the tape
- Rewind or cue the tape to the point you want to capture.
- In OBS, start recording, then press play on the VCR. Keep an eye on the preview, audio meter, and available disk space while the tape runs.
- When playback is finished, stop recording in OBS and review the resulting file. If the test showed a problem, correct it and make another short test before capturing the tape again.
Fix common capture problems
OBS shows a black preview
- Make sure the VCR is playing and the adapter is connected to the input receiving the signal.
- In the source properties, check that OBS selected the capture adapter rather than another camera.
- Reseat the cables and confirm that the chosen resolution and frame rate are supported by the device.
- Check that the manufacturer’s driver is installed and provides Windows DirectShow output.
The preview has video, but the recording has no sound
- Watch the OBS mixer while the tape is playing. If the meter does not move, check the capture source’s audio mode and selected audio device, or add the adapter’s audio input separately as its driver requires.
- Some drivers capture audio without playing it through the PC speakers. OBS’s capture-only audio mode can record the source without making it audible during capture; use Audio Monitoring if you need to hear it live.
- Replay the test file to distinguish a monitoring issue from audio missing in the recording.
The video stutters or appears delayed
OBS documents buffering as a setting to try when a capture source stutters or is delayed. Change one buffering state at a time and repeat a short test; the useful setting varies by adapter. Elgato’s recommendations apply to its own device and should not automatically be used for other hardware.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The image looks washed out or overly contrasted
Check the selected video standard and any color-range setting exposed by the adapter. Elgato notes that an incorrect range can make its captured image look overly contrasted or faded; use the relevant device documentation rather than treating that guidance as universal.

Motion has comb-like lines
Interlacing artifacts can appear in motion in footage captured from VHS. Deinterlacing is an optional part of the quality workflow, but the appropriate method—and whether to apply it during capture or later—depends on the source and workflow. A filter cannot restore picture detail that was not captured.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Settings that should not be copied blindly
Capture adapters expose different input modes, and tape standards vary. A UCEC manual gives 480×333 as an example in its OBS instructions, but that is a device-manual example, not a universal VHS capture resolution. Use a mode the adapter actually supports, match the video standard to the tape, and verify the image with a short test rather than forcing a custom value.
