Set your frame rate for the finished video, then use a shutter speed near twice that frame rate as a starting point; in bright light, a compatible ND filter can help you keep that shutter setting. Exact flight modes, gimbal controls, and recording options vary by drone model.
Set the frame rate and shutter before you fly
Choose a frame rate that matches the video you plan to deliver and the recording modes your drone supports. DJI’s videography guide gives 25 frames per second (fps) with a 1/50-second shutter as an example, and 30 fps with a 1/60-second shutter as another. It associates the first combination with a standard Australian 50 Hz context and the second with global or US delivery, but the right choice depends on your project and lighting—not a universal regional rule. A shutter near twice the frame rate is a creative starting point for natural-looking motion blur, not a requirement. A faster shutter can make movement look crisper but may appear staccato; a slower one adds blur, which can become excessive when the scene moves quickly.

Adjust exposure for the scene
If your drone offers manual exposure, set frame rate and shutter first, then adjust exposure for the available light. Some drone cameras have fixed apertures, leaving shutter speed and ISO as the main exposure controls; check your model’s manual for its options. If daylight is too bright to hold your intended shutter without overexposing the image, use an ND filter made for that exact aircraft and camera. ND filters reduce the light reaching the camera, but the strength you need depends on the conditions and chosen settings. DJI notes that its filters are designed around the gimbal camera’s center of gravity; a filter that does not fit or balance correctly may not be suitable. See DJI’s guide to drone ND filters.

Choose a slow-response flight mode if available
Many drones offer a cinematic mode or an equivalent setting that makes control response less abrupt. DJI describes its Cine mode as limiting speed and ascent or descent while slowing braking and rotation. Its support page says, “Cine mode changes how the drone maneuvers by slowing its rate of braking and rotation, creating more fluid movements and video captures.” That describes DJI products covered by the page; names and behavior differ across aircraft and brands. Check your drone’s manual or the manufacturer’s support page before relying on a mode. DJI’s remote-controller modes documentation describes its supported modes.
Plan one controlled move per clip
Fly more slowly than feels instinctive. Apply gradual pressure to the sticks, and avoid abrupt acceleration, stopping, or yawing. DJI’s videography guide recommends gradual inputs and cautions against short, abrupt control movements. A simple clip built around one move—such as a slow reveal, a straight tracking pass, or a gradual orbit—is easier to control than a shot that combines several movements.

- Choose the subject, direction of travel, and end point before starting the recording.
- Begin moving gently, hold a steady pace through the main part of the shot, and ease off rather than stopping sharply.
- Record a few seconds before and after the intended action so the clip has room for editing. DJI notes that clips that are too short can be difficult to cut with.
Keep the aircraft’s path and surroundings in mind while framing the shot. A smooth movement is not worth compromising safe separation from obstacles or other aircraft.

Move the gimbal gently
Aircraft movement and camera movement are separate controls: you can fly steadily while changing the camera angle, but a quick gimbal tilt or pan can still make footage feel abrupt. Use slow, deliberate gimbal inputs and avoid trying to reframe repeatedly within a short clip. DJI says supported controls can fine-tune gimbal speed and smoothness; manual pan is not available on every model. Record at a quality your drone and storage support
DJI’s videography guide recommends recording at the highest bitrate the aircraft supports and using 10-bit colour where available. These options can increase demands on storage and editing, and not every drone offers them. Choose a memory card that meets the requirements in your exact drone’s manual; there is no one card speed or capacity that applies to every model.

Watch the recording before changing several settings at once. Look for horizon behavior, exposure consistency, focus, and abrupt speed changes. If movement looks staccato, a shutter that is too fast may be one cause; if motion is heavily smeared, the shutter may be too slow for the action. If the aircraft path is smooth but the framing jerks, review your gimbal input. Post-stabilization may help with some footage, but it cannot guarantee a fix for every clip or replace controlled, safe flying.

Check rules and airspace before filming
Flight rules depend on where you fly and how the flight is conducted. The FAA guidance below applies to the United States; pilots elsewhere should check their national aviation authority. In the US, requirements differ between recreational flying and operations under Part 107, and airspace authorization may be needed depending on location and circumstances. Review the FAA’s recreational flyer guidance, its Part 107 overview (published July 6, 2026), and What To Know About Drones (published January 14, 2025). The Part 107 page states: “Always avoid manned aircraft.”
