You can capture an India-hosted website from AWS Lambda by packaging a Lambda-compatible Chromium browser with Puppeteer or Playwright, navigating to the page, waiting for the content you need, and saving the screenshot—commonly to Amazon S3. The site’s location does not by itself determine the best Lambda region; test the actual pages from candidate regions and compare results.
Choose a browser and deployment approach
Lambda does not provide a general desktop browser for your function. Your deployment must include Chromium and an automation library that work together with the Lambda runtime. AWS has published an architecture using Puppeteer and headless Chrome in a Lambda container image, with screenshots stored in S3: AWS’s Puppeteer screenshot architecture.

Package Chromium for Lambda
A standard Puppeteer installation may not include a browser binary suitable for Lambda. Use a Lambda-compatible Chromium build or a container that includes the required browser and libraries, and pin the browser and automation-library versions together. AWS documents container-image deployment, including image formats and runtime requirements, in its Lambda container image documentation.

AWS documents a maximum uncompressed image size of 10 GB. If you use a custom runtime or a non-AWS base image, include the Lambda Runtime Interface Client as required by the image documentation. Keep the image as small as practical, but do not remove libraries the browser needs to render pages.
The chrome-aws-lambda project advises allocating at least 512 MB of memory and recommends 1600 MB or more. That is project guidance, not an AWS minimum or a performance guarantee for every site. Measure memory, duration, and capture success with your own pages and browser build.
Build the capture flow
- Accept and validate the URL. If the function is callable by others, restrict the schemes and destinations it can fetch. Otherwise, it can become an unintended proxy to internal or sensitive endpoints. Test only sites you are authorized to access.
- Launch the matching browser. Use the Chromium executable and launch configuration intended for your Lambda image or runtime. Do not assume a local development browser path exists in Lambda.
- Navigate with an explicit timeout. Choose a navigation condition that fits the target. A document response does not necessarily mean a client-rendered page has finished drawing.
- Wait for page readiness deliberately. Prefer a meaningful selector or other application-specific ready signal. A short bounded delay can help for known animations, but an unbounded wait or a universal fixed delay can waste execution time or still capture too early.
- Capture the required scope. Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots; choose the smallest scope that meets the task. See Playwright’s screenshot documentation.
- Write the result durably. Upload bytes to S3 or return them from the invocation, depending on the calling workflow. Set object access, names, retention, and lifecycle rules for your needs.
- Close resources in all paths. Close the browser in a cleanup/finally path on both success and error so the invocation does not leave browser work unfinished.
Example with Playwright and a compatible Chromium package
The following illustrates the handler structure: launch a Chromium build supplied by the deployment, navigate, wait for a page-specific readiness selector, take a full-page image, and close the browser. The precise package import and launch options vary by Chromium package and version; use the current documentation for the package you select rather than copying an older package’s runtime assumptions.

};For a target without a main element, replace the selector with a real readiness signal on that site. If the page is static, a successful navigation may be enough; for client-rendered content, wait on the content your capture actually needs. The exact readiness condition is site-specific, not an AWS guarantee.
Pick the capture scope
- Viewport: capture the current visible browser area for a consistent fixed-size image.
- Element: capture a selected component such as a chart or product card; wait for that element to become visible first.
- Full page: capture the scrollable document. Long pages and lazy-loaded content may need additional handling, and the resulting image can be large.
Store screenshots in S3
S3 is the destination in AWS’s documented screenshot architecture. A production handler should upload the screenshot buffer with the AWS SDK using a bucket and key chosen for the workload. Grant the function only the bucket permissions it needs, avoid public object access unless that is intentional, and establish naming and lifecycle rules that fit your retention requirements. The cited examples do not prescribe a retention period.
For a large URL list, avoid doing all work inside one invocation without considering execution limits and failure isolation. AWS’s architecture describes using a second function to fan out across target URLs. An orchestrated or queued workflow can also let each URL have its own retry and result record; select the pattern based on volume and operational needs.

Select a Lambda region by testing the target
No cited source establishes a best AWS region, India-specific latency, or comparative reliability for websites hosted in India. An India-hosted domain does not automatically require the Lambda function to run in India. Choose candidate regions that satisfy your account, data, and operational constraints, then run the same authorized URL set from each.

Reliability, visual consistency, and cost
Make captures reproducible
Screenshot output can change with the operating system, browser version, viewport, fonts, device scale factor, and rendering settings. Pin and update the environment deliberately if you compare images over time. Keep viewport and capture settings stable, and record the browser/build version with results when visual diffs matter.

Budget with measured workload data
Repeated invocations can incur charges for Lambda, S3 storage and requests, and any orchestration services. The archived AWS scheduled-screenshot sample warns that charges may apply beyond the Free Tier. Estimate costs from your expected invocation count, duration, memory allocation, stored image volume, and retention policy using current AWS pricing; do not treat a historical example as a current price quote.
