CaptureKit documents how to authenticate your API request to CaptureKit, but its reviewed screenshot documentation does not establish how to authenticate that request to a password-protected website. The API key in x-api-key is not the target site’s password or session. For private pages, confirm an approved target-authentication method with CaptureKit support before building a workflow.
What CaptureKit’s documented authentication does—and does not—cover
CaptureKit’s x-api-key authenticates your caller to the CaptureKit API. It does not, by itself, log the screenshot browser into the website whose URL you submit. The two credentials serve different purposes: your API key grants access to the screenshot service, while a protected target may require its own login, cookie, or session.

The reviewed CaptureKit introduction explains API authentication, and the capture endpoint reference documents a target URL and rendering options. That endpoint reference does not document target-site cookies, custom headers, a login flow, or browser-session reuse. This describes the reviewed documentation, not proof that CaptureKit has no separate or newer supported feature.

For public URLs, CaptureKit documents a screenshot endpoint request authenticated with an API key in the x-api-key header. The endpoint supports PNG, JPEG/JPG, WebP, and PDF output, along with rendering controls such as device emulation, full-page capture, viewport dimensions, scale factor, image quality, element selection, waits and delay, resource or URL blocking, proxy routing, and optional S3 storage. These controls change rendering, timing, network routing, or output; the documentation reviewed does not describe them as target-site login mechanisms.

Use CaptureKit’s current endpoint reference for the exact URL, required fields, and current parameter names. The official quick start recommends keeping the API key in an environment variable and proxying calls through your backend. Do not put the key in browser-side JavaScript or a mobile app where users can inspect it.
CaptureKit’s public-URL playbook provides an example of the ordinary public-page workflow. It should not be treated as a verified procedure for logging into a protected target.

What to do before attempting a protected page
- Ask CaptureKit support whether it currently supports target-site authentication for screenshots, and request the specific approved mechanism and current instructions.
- Clarify whether their supported method applies to your target’s authentication model—for example, whether they support a provided session cookie, custom request header, or managed login flow. Do not assume any of these work unless CaptureKit confirms it.
- Keep the CaptureKit API key server-side and route requests through your own backend, following the CaptureKit API-call guidance.
- Test only with an account and page you are authorized to access. Avoid putting passwords, session cookies, or other secrets in URLs, logs, or client-visible code.
Why rendering options are not a substitute for login
Viewport and device settings, full-page mode, selector capture, waits, delays, proxy routing, and output format govern how a page is rendered or returned. They do not establish that the target website will receive a valid authenticated session. A page that redirects to a login screen may therefore produce a screenshot of that screen rather than the private content you expected.

Likewise, a CaptureKit API key proves authorization to call CaptureKit; it should not be confused with the target site’s username, password, or session token. The documentation reviewed does not establish a way to supply those target credentials to the capture browser.

Troubleshooting public-page captures
- The result shows a login screen: The target may require a session. The reviewed endpoint documentation does not establish how to provide one; ask CaptureKit support for a supported approach rather than trying rendering parameters as authentication.
- The API rejects the request: Check that the API key is sent in the documented
x-api-keyheader and consult CaptureKit’s authentication and errors documentation. - The capture is incomplete or blank: For a public page, use the endpoint’s documented wait, delay, selector, or full-page options as appropriate. These can help with rendering and timing but will not log into the target.
- The output type or dimensions are wrong: Verify the format and viewport-related settings against the current endpoint parameter reference.
