Navigate to the page, wait for the specific content you need to appear, then capture the viewport, full page, or a chosen element. A static HTML fetch does not execute the page’s scripts, and a fixed delay alone cannot confirm that an asynchronous component is ready.
Why a JavaScript-capable browser is necessary
Many sites build or update visible content in the browser after the initial HTML arrives. A static request can retrieve source without running those scripts, so its output may omit the rendered content. Browser automation runs the page’s JavaScript and can capture the resulting view. Playwright’s documented screenshot workflow is described in its screenshot guide.

Choose what part of the page to capture
- Viewport: captures the visible browser area at the current viewport size.
- Full page: captures the document’s scrollable page in one image.
- Element: captures a selected component, useful when the rest of the page is irrelevant.
Full-page capture does not guarantee that every lazy-loaded image or resource has loaded. If those matter, make sure they have appeared before capturing.
Capture with Playwright
Install Playwright and its Chromium browser, then save this as capture.mjs. Replace the example URL and selector with the page and content you need.

}Playwright’s navigation and screenshot APIs are documented in its screenshot guide. The sample waits for a visible main element; use a locator that represents the actual content you need. If the page has no suitable main, wait for a distinctive heading, result, or application state instead.

For only the visible browser area, omit fullPage or set it to false. For a specific component, use its locator:

Wait for the content that matters
page.goto() reaching a navigation milestone is not proof that every client-rendered component, API response, or late-loading image is ready. Playwright provides load-state waits, but its documentation notes that many actions auto-wait; for a screenshot, a wait tied to the actual content is often more useful than waiting blindly for a general event. - Wait for a selector: use a visible locator for the widget or text that must appear.
- Wait for a known page state: when the application exposes a stable state you can observe, wait for that state rather than guessing how long rendering takes.
- Use a delay only when appropriate: a short delay can accommodate known animation or transition timing, but it does not establish that a request succeeded or content is complete.

Check the output and make repeated captures comparable
Open the saved image and verify the text, images, and layout you expected are present. If you are comparing screenshots across runs, keep the browser version, operating system, viewport, and relevant settings consistent. Rendering can vary with platform, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; identical page code does not guarantee pixel-identical output. Troubleshoot missing or incomplete content
- Screenshot is blank or missing app content: confirm the page is being opened in a browser that executes JavaScript, then wait for a meaningful app element or state.
- Navigation times out: a page may continue making requests after the content you need is ready. Wait for the target content rather than assuming every network request must finish; increase the navigation timeout only if navigation itself needs more time.
- Target selector never appears: inspect the page for the correct selector, account for content that appears only after interaction, and check whether the page reached an error or bot-check screen.
- Images are absent in a full-page capture: some resources load lazily as the page is scrolled. A full-page option alone does not guarantee those resources were fetched; verify the image content before relying on the result.
- Captures differ between machines: standardize browser and environment settings, including viewport and browser version, before interpreting visual differences as page changes.
