How to Capture Screenshots of Multiple URLs with an API Without Breaking Rate Limits

A practical guide to batching or queueing website screenshot jobs, pacing requests, tracking per-URL results, and retrying failures without confusing rate limits with monthly quota.

To capture many URLs reliably, use the provider’s batch endpoint when it fits your job; otherwise, put individual captures in a queue and pace them according to that provider’s current limits or usage data. Track each URL separately, distinguish a temporary rate limit from exhausted monthly quota, and retry only failures that are likely to be transient.

Choose a batch endpoint or a paced queue

A batch endpoint can reduce the work of submitting and tracking a large set of captures, but it does not necessarily reduce how many screenshots count toward your plan. If the API has no suitable batch option—or if you need control over pacing—submit individual captures through a queue.

Use batch when the provider supports your workflow

Check the maximum batch size, whether processing is synchronous or asynchronous, how to retrieve results, and how each URL is charged against request limits and monthly quota. Screenshot API documents POST /api/v1/screenshot/batch, batch IDs, and status tracking in its REST API documentation. ScreenshotRun documents a batch maximum of 100 URLs, per-URL quota accounting, and per-URL rate limiting; its batch feature requires Pro or above according to its documentation. Confirm current eligibility and behavior before building around it: ScreenshotRun Batch Screenshots.

Use a queue when you need pacing or per-URL control

A queue lets you limit how quickly requests start, preserve progress, and retry only unfinished captures. Keep concurrency within the provider’s current limit. ScreenshotOne recommends using its usage endpoint’s concurrency.remaining and concurrency.reset fields to pace work; those fields describe its current one-minute request bucket, not the number of browser renders actively running. See its guide to screenshots of multiple URLs.

Plan request rate and monthly quota separately

Rate limits control how quickly requests can be made within a time window. Monthly quota limits the total screenshots charged during a billing period. A batch submission may count as one API submission for one purpose while its individual URLs still count toward screenshot quota or per-URL limits. Check the provider’s accounting rules rather than assuming that one batch equals one screenshot.

Provider limits are not interchangeable. For example, Screenshot API documents 60 requests per minute and 500 screenshots per month on its free plan, along with rate-limit and quota headers; these are that provider’s documented plan values, not general API limits. Screenshot Studio documents 20 screenshot requests per minute per IP and says its 429 responses include Retry-After. Limits and plans can change, so verify them in the provider’s own documentation before deployment.

What to compare Why it matters
Batch maximum and eligibility Determines how many URLs one submission can contain and which plans can use the feature.
What consumes the rate limit The provider may limit submissions, individual URLs, or both.
Monthly quota accounting Establishes whether each URL consumes quota even when submitted in a batch.
Usage endpoint or response headers May expose remaining capacity and when a request window resets.
Result retrieval Batch work may require polling a status endpoint or receiving documented events or webhooks.
Retry-safe failures Separates transient problems from invalid requests, credential errors, or exhausted quota.

Build a reliable multi-URL capture workflow

  1. Validate and normalize the input list. Confirm each URL is in a format accepted by the chosen API, remove accidental duplicates if your job does not need them, and keep the original URL associated with its result. Do not retry a URL rejected as invalid.
  2. Choose batch submission or queueing. For a supported batch, save the returned batch ID and any per-URL identifiers. For individual captures, enqueue URLs and cap concurrency or submission pace using the provider’s documented limit or live usage information.
  3. Persist job state. For each URL, record its attempt count, current status, response status, provider request ID if offered, and final output location. This makes it possible to resume after interruption without repeating completed work.
  4. Collect results using the documented mechanism. Poll the provider’s status endpoint or use its documented event mechanism. Store completed outputs as they arrive instead of waiting until every URL has finished.
  5. Classify failures before retrying. Retry only transient failures, with a bounded number of attempts and increasing delays. Honor Retry-After when a temporary 429 response supplies it.
  6. Stop on permanent or quota failures. Correct invalid URLs or credentials rather than resubmitting them. For depleted monthly quota, wait for the reset or change the plan; immediate retries will not restore quota.

Handle 429s and transient failures safely

A 429 can mean a temporary request-rate limit or, depending on the provider, an exhausted allowance. Read the response body and headers and consult that provider’s error documentation before deciding what to do. ScreenshotEngine documents plan-specific monthly screenshot and per-minute request limits, and advises checking the account dashboard for usage and billing details: errors, rate limits, and troubleshooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Temporary rate limit: Pause until the stated reset time or wait for Retry-After when supplied. Resume at a slower pace if the queue encounters another limit.
  • Monthly quota exhausted: Do not keep retrying. Wait for the quota reset or change the plan.
  • Invalid URL or request: Fix the input or request parameters; repeating the same request is not a recovery strategy.
  • Authentication error: Check the key, its permissions, and the provider’s required authentication format before resuming.
  • Timeout or other transient failure: Retry with a capped policy using increasing delays and jitter. Keep the retry bound finite so a sustained outage cannot create an endless loop.

Retry only the failed or unfinished items, not an entire batch that already contains successful captures. A provider may return per-item statuses or identifiers; use them to reconcile results before resubmitting.

Common implementation problems and fixes

  • Every batch request receives a 429: The provider may limit each URL rather than only each batch submission. Check its per-URL rules and slow the queue.
  • Work stops partway through the month: Check monthly usage separately from request-window capacity. A higher request rate will not resolve depleted monthly quota.
  • Polling never produces a result: Confirm that you are checking the documented status endpoint with the correct batch ID, and inspect per-URL state if available.
  • Completed URLs are captured again after a restart: Persist job state and mark successful outputs complete before retrying remaining work.
  • Retries make the limit worse: Avoid immediate repeated submissions. Honor provider reset information, apply bounded backoff and jitter, and exclude permanent errors from the retry set.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a screenshot API with bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, async jobs, signed webhooks, and a usage API. Its one-call capture example is:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the bulk workflow and request options. Cookie banners are accepted like a visitor and removed along with known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for free.

Operational checklist

  • Confirm current limits, batch eligibility, URL accounting, and reset behavior in the provider’s documentation.
  • Use a batch endpoint only when its size, tracking, and quota rules fit the job.
  • Otherwise, queue URLs and pace submissions from documented limits or usage data.
  • Persist per-URL progress and retry only transient or unfinished captures.
  • Honor Retry-After; do not retry invalid requests, bad credentials, or exhausted monthly quota.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I limit the number of workers or the rate at which they submit requests?

Use whichever control matches the provider’s documented limit. If the provider exposes a usage endpoint or reset information, use that data to pace submissions rather than assuming a fixed worker count is sufficient.

Not necessarily. Some providers count each URL in a batch toward monthly screenshot quota, so check the provider’s accounting rules.
