For a small batch of independent URLs, create a separate Playwright page for each target, start each page’s navigation and screenshot task, and await the tasks together with Promise.all(). Use separate browser contexts when captures need different cookies, storage, locale, or other context-level settings. For larger batches, cap concurrency rather than opening every page at once.
Capture several independent pages in parallel
page.screenshot() captures one page. A browser can have multiple pages, so a standalone script can create one page per target and run independent capture tasks concurrently. The example below uses the documented page and browser model; using Promise.all() for this workflow is an implementation pattern, not a Playwright-prescribed recipe. Install Playwright and its Chromium browser in your project first, as described in the Playwright installation guide. Save this as an ES module, for example capture.mjs, then run node capture.mjs:

}Each task creates and closes its own page, and the distinct names keep the output files separate. The outer finally closes the browser even if a task fails. By default, Promise.all() rejects when any task rejects; it does not cancel the other tasks. If you need to report every URL’s outcome rather than stop at the first rejection, use Promise.allSettled() and inspect each result.

Share a context or isolate each capture?
Pages in one browser context share that context’s browser profile and settings. That is useful when captures should share cookies or emulation settings. Use a separate context when captures need independent cookies, storage, locale, viewport, or other context-level configuration. Contexts provide isolated browser profiles; see the BrowserContext API.
When using multiple contexts, create one for each distinct profile and close it when its work finishes. Do not create a fresh context for every URL if all targets intentionally share a profile; that adds unnecessary setup and changes the state being captured.
Limit concurrency for larger batches
Promise.all(targets.map(...)) starts all the mapped work without waiting for one capture to finish before starting the next. This is convenient for a small finite list, but an unbounded list can open many pages simultaneously and consume substantial browser and machine resources. Playwright’s documentation does not establish a universally optimal concurrency limit for standalone screenshot scripts. Choose a cap and tune it against your machine and target sites.

This worker-pool version runs at most concurrency captures at once while keeping each result associated with its target. It continues through individual failures so the final report includes both successful and failed URLs:

Set concurrency to a positive integer appropriate for your workload. Raising it may improve throughput, but also increases simultaneous browser work; measure on the actual machine and sites rather than assuming a particular speedup.
When the screenshots are tests, use Playwright Test workers
If screenshots are part of an automated test suite, Playwright Test can parallelize test files. Files run in parallel by default, while tests in a file run in order by default. To run tests in one file in parallel, configure that describe block with test.describe.configure({ mode: 'parallel' }). Project-wide or configuration-level fully parallel modes are also available. The worker count can be controlled, for example with npx playwright test --workers 4; --workers=1 disables parallel execution. See Playwright’s Parallelism guide.

Each Playwright Test worker runs in its own worker process with its own browser and isolated BrowserContext. This separates cookies, storage, and in-memory state between workers, but it does not isolate a shared database, remote account, or shared output directory. Give tests independent backend records and unique output paths where they write files.

The test runner’s worker count schedules tests; it does not automatically limit an arbitrary Promise.all() that you create inside a test. If one test must capture several pages concurrently, manage those pages or contexts explicitly.
Choose capture or visual comparison
Use page.screenshot() when the goal is to capture an image, such as a PNG file. For visual regression checks in Playwright Test, use expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). The assertion waits for two consecutive screenshots of the page to be the same before comparing the result with the expected baseline. It is a test assertion, not simply a file-writing substitute. Visual output can vary with host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Create and compare baselines in the same environment when practical. The first run may create a reference snapshot; review and commit baseline changes deliberately. See Playwright’s visual comparison guidance.

- Some captures overwrite others: concurrent tasks are writing to the same path. Give each URL or test a unique filename, or write into separate test-scoped directories.
- A site shows another target’s login or consent state: pages share context state. Use separate browser contexts for captures that need independent cookies or storage.
- The batch uses too much memory or appears less reliable as it grows: reduce the concurrency cap and inspect failures per target. A large unbounded
Promise.all()can create too many pages at once. - The script exits with a navigation timeout: the page did not reach the selected navigation condition before the timeout. Check that the URL is reachable and choose the navigation condition appropriate to the site; for example, a page that continues loading background requests need not be awaited until network idle just to take a screenshot.
- One rejection prevents a complete batch report:
Promise.all()rejects on the first rejected promise. Catch errors per task, as in the bounded example, or usePromise.allSettled()when you want every promise’s outcome. - Parallel tests interfere despite separate contexts: contexts do not isolate shared services or files. Use unique test data in the external backend and avoid shared mutable output paths.
- Visual snapshots differ across runs or machines: keep the browser and rendering environment consistent, and review baseline changes rather than treating every difference as a product regression.
