Short answer: PageSpeed Insights API v5 does not provide a documented bulk screenshot endpoint. Its runPagespeed method analyzes one URL per request and returns Lighthouse results, not a screenshot image. To audit a list of pages, send one request for each URL and save each result. To capture actual images, use a separate screenshot tool or browser workflow.
What PageSpeed Insights API v5 returns
The current method is GET https://pagespeedonline.googleapis.com/pagespeedonline/v5/runPagespeed. It requires a url parameter and runs Lighthouse for that page. The response is JSON containing analysis results, including the resolved document ID, analysis timestamp, Lighthouse result, and version information.

The method reference does not document screenshot capture or an image field. Google’s older v4 reference included screenshot-related fields, but that historical behavior is not evidence that v5 supports screenshots. Do not add an assumed screenshot=true parameter to the v5 request.
Use PageSpeed Insights when you need performance diagnostics. If the output you need is a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF, use a screenshot-capable browser or service separately.

Run PageSpeed Insights on a list of URLs
There is no documented bulk method in the v5 reference: your code holds the URL list and makes one request per URL. The following Python example uses the standard library, encodes page URLs safely (including their own query strings), and stores each response alongside the requested URL and selected run settings.

In Node.js, use URL and searchParams rather than manually concatenating a URL. This avoids breaking the request when the page URL contains query parameters.

If a browser-based JavaScript app calls the Google endpoint directly, account for the browser’s cross-origin and key-exposure implications; server-side automation avoids exposing a reusable key in client code.
Choose strategy and categories deliberately
Mobile or desktop
The optional strategy parameter selects mobile or desktop; desktop is the documented default. Set it explicitly in a batch so each result records the intended mode and comparisons do not accidentally mix defaults.

The optional category parameter selects Lighthouse categories. Performance is the default category; request other categories explicitly when they are relevant. The API reference documents parameters for category, locale, and strategy.

Geography and repeatability
The method reference does not describe a geographic test-location parameter, so do not assume that a run represents a region you selected. Lighthouse and response data can change over time; retain the returned id, analysisUTCTimestamp, and version with each result, along with your requested URL, strategy, and categories.
Make the batch reliable and interpretable
- Normalize your input: use fully qualified URLs and decide whether redirects should be treated as the same requested page or retained as separate inputs.
- Encode rather than concatenate: page URLs can contain query strings, ampersands, or other characters that must not be mistaken for PageSpeed API parameters.
- Persist per-URL outcomes: write each successful response and record failures independently so one unavailable page does not erase the rest of the batch.
- Keep response metadata: retain the resolved document ID, analysis timestamp, and version information for traceability.
- Respect project limits: Google recommends an API key for frequent automated queries. The getting-started material reviewed does not establish a numerical quota or universal batch size; check the active Google Cloud project limits and service guidance before choosing concurrency or retry behavior.
- Allow for version changes: Google states that PageSpeed Insights API versioning and Lighthouse versioning are independent. Its release notes report that PSI and its API were updated to Lighthouse 13.0 on October 20, 2025. Preserve version metadata and make parsers tolerant of fields that may change or be absent.
Common errors and fixes
The request returns an error instead of a Lighthouse result
Check that the endpoint is exactly https://pagespeedonline.googleapis.com/pagespeedonline/v5/runPagespeed, that url is present and fully qualified, and that the URL is encoded as one query parameter. For frequent automation, configure and supply an API key as Google recommends. Consult the current project limits and service guidance for quota-related failures rather than assuming a fixed request rate.
A page URL contains its own query parameters
Do not append it by string concatenation without encoding. Use a URL builder, Python’s urlencode, or cURL’s --data-urlencode. Otherwise characters such as & may split the page URL into unintended API parameters.

That is expected for the documented v5 method. It returns Lighthouse analysis, not a documented screenshot. Use a separate capture workflow for image output; the legacy v4 screenshot fields do not establish v5 support.

Saved reports differ between runs
Compare like with like: retain the strategy, categories, requested URL, analysis timestamp, and returned version metadata. Lighthouse updates independently of the API’s v5 label, and the endpoint documentation does not offer a geography selector.
CrUX data is missing or changes
Google’s getting-started material says real-world CrUX data in the PSI API is planned for discontinuation and recommends the CrUX API or CrUX History API for that data. The material does not give an end date, so check Google’s current documentation before building a dependency on PSI’s CrUX fields.

PageSpeed Insights answers “how did Lighthouse assess this page?” A screenshot workflow answers “what did the rendered page look like?” Keep those outputs distinct: a performance report is not a visual image, and this method does not document full-page screenshot controls or image formats.
