Then run that script on a scheduler. With Playwright, predictable modals should be handled directly in the normal flow; its overlay handler is better reserved for unexpected overlays.
Choose what the screenshot should include
Decide the output before writing the script. Playwright can capture the visible viewport, the entire scrollable page, or a single element. A full-page capture may include content below the fold; an element capture is useful when the target is a chart, report, or other specific component.

- Viewport: the page as currently visible in the browser window.
- Full page: the entire scrollable page.
- Element: the area matched by a locator, such as a stable CSS selector.
Set a deliberate viewport size and use a stable browser environment if the images will be compared over time.
Write the Playwright capture flow
Install Playwright and its browser for the environment that will run the job, then save this as capture.mjs. Replace the example URL and selectors with ones for the target site. The example assumes the modal appears predictably and has a button with an accessible name of “Accept” or “Close.” Adjust the button locator to match the site’s actual control.

}domcontentloaded is only a navigation milestone; it does not prove that a site’s data, images, or client-rendered content is ready. Replace main with a selector that represents the particular content you need. If the modal is required for the page to load or the button text differs, update the logic rather than assuming a generic dismissal works on every site.
Capture a viewport or one element
For a viewport image, omit fullPage or set it to false. For one element, capture a locator after it is ready:

For a modal that appears in a known place in the flow, wait for it, use its real dismiss control, and verify it is gone before capture. Playwright specifically recommends this normal-flow approach for predictable overlays rather than page.addLocatorHandler(). Playwright documents the handler as a mechanism for overlays that appear unexpectedly.
A locator handler is not a background watcher: Playwright checks it before actions and auto-waiting assertions. Its execution time counts against the timeout for that action or assertion, and interacting with an overlay can affect focus or mouse state. Use it only when the overlay is genuinely unpredictable and write the handler so it dismisses the correct obstruction.

Native JavaScript dialogs are different
An HTML modal is part of the page. A JavaScript alert, confirm, prompt, or beforeunload dialog is a browser dialog. If you install a Playwright dialog listener, it must accept or dismiss the dialog or the action can stall. Without a listener, Playwright automatically dismisses dialogs. See Playwright’s dialog documentation.
Run the script on a recurring schedule
A scheduler’s job is to start the capture script at the times you choose; it does not make the page state reliable. Configure the scheduler for the host and execution environment you use, and verify its current syntax, timezone behavior, and runtime limits in that scheduler’s official documentation. Keep the script’s output path and permissions valid for that environment, and store any credentials outside the source file.

- Run
capture.mjsmanually in the same environment intended for scheduled runs. - Confirm that the output file is created, contains the intended page state, and is accessible to the next step in your workflow.
- Configure your scheduler to invoke the script and use an explicit timezone if the scheduler supports it.
- Check the scheduler’s run history and captured files after the first scheduled execution; alert on missing or invalid output rather than assuming a run succeeded.
GitHub Actions is one possible way to run recurring jobs, but exact workflow syntax and scheduling behavior should be checked against its current documentation. The key implementation requirement is the same in any environment: the job must launch the browser, execute the script, and persist or deliver the generated file.
Make captures repeatable
Visual output can differ across operating systems, browser versions, hardware, and headless settings. Use the same browser and host setup for recurring captures or visual baselines. Dynamic elements such as rotating banners or timestamps can also make images differ even when the page is functioning normally. Playwright supports applying a stylesheet to filter or stabilize such content for screenshot comparisons; see its visual comparisons guidance.
Troubleshoot failed or inconsistent captures
- The modal remains in the screenshot: the selector may not match the actual dialog, the button may have a different accessible name, or the modal may appear after the script’s check. Inspect the page and wait for the modal’s visibility before clicking its real dismiss control.
- The click times out: the button may be covered, disabled, or not yet visible. Wait for the correct button to be visible and enabled, and ensure the locator points to the modal’s own control.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: navigation completion is not the same as application readiness. Wait for a page-specific content selector or a known loaded state before capturing.
- The scheduled run works locally but not on the scheduler: compare the runtime, installed browser, permissions, working directory, environment variables, and output path. The scheduled host must be able to launch the required browser.
- Images differ between runs: keep browser and host conditions consistent and reduce dynamic page content where appropriate.
- The run hangs on a native dialog: if a dialog listener is registered, make sure it accepts or dismisses every dialog it receives.
