To capture comparable mobile website screenshots in different locales, change the locale context on an Android phone or emulator, open the same page in the same browser, and keep the viewport and page state consistent. Then verify that the website—not merely Android or Chrome’s interface—actually changed language. A device locale alone does not guarantee that a site will display a translation.
What “locale” means when testing a mobile website
Language can be influenced by several separate settings. Android’s system locale, a supported app’s per-app language, Chrome’s preferred website languages, and a website’s own language selector are not interchangeable. A site may use one of these signals, offer its own controls, or provide no translation for the locale you choose.

- Android system locale: The device’s language and, where selected, regional context.
- Per-app language: A language preference for an app that supports Android’s per-app language feature. It applies to that app; it does not establish that a website has a translation.
- Chrome language settings: Chrome distinguishes its interface language from preferred languages for website content. The available evidence does not establish exactly how every current Chrome installation combines those preferences with Android’s system locale or how a particular site negotiates language.
- Website language controls: A site may have a language menu or remember a previous selection. Check the site itself rather than assuming Android will override it.
Use a BCP-47 locale tag to record the test target. A language-only choice tests a language generally; a tag such as fr-CA adds a regional distinction that can affect spelling, date formats, or localized offers. How to capture mobile website screenshots in multiple locales on Android
- Choose and record the locale. Decide whether you are testing a language alone or a language-region combination, such as
fr-CA. Use the region when regional wording or formats matter. - Set the Android locale. On a physical device, use its language settings. In an emulator, use its locale controls and select or enter the intended locale. Android’s localization guide describes changing the device language through Settings and testing on a device or emulator (Android Developers: Localize your app).
- Check app-specific language only if relevant. Android’s per-app language controls apply to participating apps. Android 13 introduced platform per-app language preferences, and Android Help notes that only apps supporting the feature appear in the app list. Android 14 also adds regional preference settings described in Android Help. These options do not demonstrate that a website offers a translation (Android Developers: Per-app language preferences; Google Android Help: Change app language on your Android phone).
- Open the target site in the intended browser. Check Chrome’s preferred languages for website content separately from its interface language. If the site has a language selector, inspect it and note any selection you make. Chrome’s setting labels distinguish these language concepts, but the exact interaction between Chrome, Android, and a particular site should be verified on the page (Chromium Project: Android Chrome language settings strings).
- Stabilize the capture conditions. For every locale, use the same URL, device or emulator profile, orientation, zoom, scroll position, and page state. Wait for the content you need to finish loading before capturing.
- Capture the visible screen. Use the Android screenshot controls on a phone or the emulator’s screenshot control. Save each image with its locale tag—for example,
homepage-fr-CA.png—so the locale and page are identifiable later. - Repeat for each locale. Change only the locale-related setting you are testing where possible. If you also change a site language menu or browser preference, record that change so you can distinguish its effect from the Android system locale.
What to verify in each screenshot
Compare the images rather than treating a changed device setting as proof of a localized page. Android’s localization guidance emphasizes language and cultural support; it also notes that resolution and density can affect the appearance of strings and drawables (Android Developers: Support different languages and cultures; Android Developers: Localize your app).
- Did the page text change? Look at headings, navigation, buttons, error messages, and footer content. Some sections may remain in the original language.
- Did the layout survive longer or shorter text? Check wrapping, clipping, overlapping controls, and text that pushes important content off-screen.
- Is text direction appropriate? For right-to-left languages, inspect reading order, alignment, icons, and navigation behavior.
- Are regional details appropriate? Check spelling, dates, numbers, currencies, and any location-specific offers that are visible.
- Are the images genuinely comparable? Confirm the same URL, viewport, orientation, zoom, scroll position, and page state before attributing visual differences to locale.
Troubleshoot an unexpected language or layout
- The page stayed in the original language: Verify Android’s system locale, Chrome’s preferred website languages, and the site’s own language control separately. The site may not offer that translation, or its language selection may not follow the setting you changed.
- Chrome changed language but the site did not: Chrome’s interface language and preferred website languages are distinct settings. Confirm the content preference and inspect the website’s controls; do not infer the site’s language-negotiation behavior from the browser interface.
- An app is missing from Android’s app-language list: The per-app control is available only for apps that support the feature. Its absence does not indicate whether a website has translations (Google Android Help).
- The same locale looks different on another screen: Compare resolution and density as well as the locale. Android guidance notes that these display characteristics can affect rendered strings and drawables (Android Developers: Localize your app).
- Text is clipped or controls overlap: Check whether longer translated strings caused the layout change, then capture at the same orientation and viewport to rule out a screen-size difference.
