Use Chrome DevTools Device Mode to explore mobile widths and inspect CSS media-query transitions; use Playwright when you need repeatable screenshots at several specified sizes. In either case, set the viewport dimensions deliberately, choose whether to capture the visible viewport or the full page, and remember that emulation is not a substitute for checking behavior on a real phone.
Choose the right capture method

Chrome describes Device Mode as a way to “approximate how your page looks and performs on a mobile device.” It does not simulate every mobile characteristic. Capture breakpoints with Chrome DevTools
- Open your web app in Chrome and open DevTools.
- Enable the device toolbar using the Toggle device toolbar control.
- In the device toolbar, set Dimensions to Responsive. Enter the width and height you want, or drag the viewport handles to explore nearby sizes.
- To inspect CSS media-query transitions, open the device toolbar’s More options menu and enable Show media queries.
- Read the breakpoint bars, which indicate max-width and min-width media queries. Click between bars to change the viewport width and trigger the corresponding breakpoint.
- Use the capture menu to take either a screenshot of the visible viewport or a full-size screenshot of the page.
The bars expose transitions present in the page’s CSS; they are not a universal list of recommended breakpoints. Use the app’s own styles or design requirements to choose what to inspect. For a transition at width W, capture on both sides of it as well as at the transition itself when useful: that reveals whether the layout changes as intended and whether it behaves sensibly just above and below the rule.
Automate a set of sizes with Playwright
Playwright is better suited to repeatable captures than manually resizing a browser. Configure a viewport for each size you want, or use a device preset when you need device settings such as screen size, user agent, and touch behavior. Here is a runnable Node.js example that captures the same page at three explicit viewport sizes. It saves viewport screenshots, not full-page captures.

Choose screenshot scope and pixel scale
Viewport or full page
A viewport capture shows only what fits in the selected width and height. A full-page capture includes content below the fold. Use viewport captures to compare how the initial screen reflows at different widths; use full-page captures when the page’s complete vertical layout matters. For a focused check, Playwright can capture an element rather than the whole page. Chrome’s capture menu likewise distinguishes visible-viewport and full-size screenshots. CSS pixels or device pixels
Playwright screenshot scale can be set to CSS pixels or device pixels. Device-pixel output accounts for device-pixel ratio and can produce a larger image. Keep the scale choice consistent when comparing files; otherwise, image dimensions may differ even when the CSS viewport is unchanged. The supported screenshot options are documented in Playwright screenshots.
Make comparisons repeatable
- Use the same viewport width and height for every run of a given comparison.
- Keep browser version, operating system, settings, and capture scale consistent where possible.
- Wait for the relevant page content to appear before capturing; a screenshot taken before fonts, images, or dynamic content settle may not represent the finished layout.
- Compare both the breakpoint itself and nearby widths if you are checking a media-query transition.
Playwright cautions that screenshot rendering can vary with the host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, and other conditions. For visual comparisons, differences between environments can affect the result; keep the environment stable and treat cross-environment pixel differences carefully. Common problems and fixes
- The layout does not change when you click a media-query bar: confirm that the page has a matching CSS media query and that the selected width crosses its condition. The bars reflect rules on the page, not a standard breakpoint catalog.
- The screenshot cuts off content: you likely captured only the viewport. Choose Chrome’s full-size capture or set Playwright’s
fullPage: truewhen you need the scrollable page. - The screenshot looks blurry or is unexpectedly large: check whether the capture uses CSS-pixel or device-pixel scaling. Choose deliberately and use the same setting across comparisons.
- A mobile issue cannot be reproduced in Device Mode: emulation does not reproduce every mobile characteristic. Test on a real phone; Chrome documents remote debugging for inspecting a page running on a mobile device.
- Repeated screenshots differ unexpectedly: keep the capture environment consistent and ensure the page has reached the state you intend to capture. Browser, operating system, hardware, and settings can affect rendering.
