Open the app project in Xcode. In the toolbar, choose a build scheme that includes the app target, then choose an iPhone simulator as the run destination.

Use the simulator to navigate to the screen you need. Set up the relevant state too—for example, open a menu or show an error message if that is what the screenshot must document.

Click the Screenshot button below the simulated device. The screenshot is saved to your Mac’s Desktop at the simulated device’s full resolution, not at the size the simulator happens to occupy on your Mac display.

Check responsive layouts across iPhone configurations
A single screenshot shows one configuration. To inspect how a layout adapts, capture a small, purposeful set of distinct states rather than several near-duplicates.

In Simulator, use the screen-resizing controls to examine the interface at different dimensions. Apple’s Simulator documentation says an iPhone screen can be resized to an arbitrary size and snaps to the nearest valid size.

Include at least one compact and one larger screen configuration when those differences matter to the layout.

Check other states relevant to the interface: for example, portrait and landscape, dark appearance, or larger text. Simulator supports changing appearance and text size.

For interfaces where language affects fit, inspect relevant localizations as well. Record which configuration each capture represents so the images are useful to reviewers later.

When to use an Xcode preview screenshot instead
Xcode’s preview canvas is useful for inspecting a view across selected preview variants; it is a separate capture path, not a replacement for a screenshot of the running app. In a supported preview workflow, you can select a device and vary settings such as appearance, orientation, Dynamic Type, and localization. Click the preview’s Screenshot button, choose a filename and save location, then save the image.

Choose a preview capture when you want to compare configured view variants without navigating the running app. Choose Device Hub when the app’s actual running state is what you need to document.
Know what a simulator screenshot establishes
A simulator capture shows the interface rendered for a simulated device configuration. Apple documents Device Hub captures at the simulated device’s resolution, but a simulator does not reproduce all physical-device behavior. Apple cautions that simulated devices do not replicate physical-device performance and that some hardware-specific features may be unavailable. Test performance-sensitive behavior and hardware-dependent features on physical devices before relying on the result.
A simulator image also does not, by itself, establish that it meets current App Store Connect screenshot specifications. Check Apple’s current Screenshot Specifications for the intended storefront and platform before submitting images; the information here does not specify current submission dimensions.

Troubleshoot common capture problems

The app does not launch in the simulator: Confirm that the selected scheme contains the app target and that the run destination is an iPhone simulator, then try running the app again.

The screenshot shows the wrong screen or state: Return to Device Hub, navigate the running app to the exact screen and state you need, and capture again. A preview screenshot is not a capture of the live app session.

The saved image looks smaller than expected: Device Hub captures at the simulated device’s full resolution, independent of the simulator window’s on-screen size. Check the saved file’s dimensions rather than judging resolution from how large the device appears on your Mac display.

A resized screen does not match the exact dimensions entered: Simulator snaps an arbitrarily resized iPhone screen to the nearest valid size. Treat the resulting configuration as the simulated size, not necessarily the exact requested dimensions.

A hardware feature or animation behaves differently from a real iPhone: The simulator has fidelity limits. Verify hardware-specific behavior and performance-sensitive interactions on a physical device.
