A single navigation wait or full-page capture may miss images that have not yet been requested.
Why lazy-loaded images are missing from screenshots
Many pages defer loading images until the image or its container approaches the viewport. A screenshot taken just after navigation can therefore include empty spaces or placeholders lower down the document: those images have not necessarily been requested yet. The reliable sequence is to trigger loading by traversing the page, wait for image readiness, and only then capture.

Puppeteer’s Page.evaluate() runs JavaScript in the page context and can await an asynchronous function. That makes it suitable for programmatic scrolling without manually operating the browser.

The following example assumes you have already created page and completed navigation. It scrolls by 80% of the viewport height, pauses after each move, waits for image load or error events, and saves a full-page PNG.

An error counts as settled so one failed resource does not leave the script waiting forever. The example is a starting pattern, not a guarantee for every site: production code should impose an overall timeout, report failed images, and account for pages that grow as more content appears.
Require successful image loads when appropriate
The example waits for load or error, which is useful for ensuring the wait completes. If every expected image must have loaded successfully, inspect img.naturalWidth > 0 after the wait and report images that fail that check. Some pages legitimately contain broken or blocked images, so treat failures according to your capture requirements rather than assuming every image request will succeed.

Handle pages whose height changes
The loop reads document.documentElement.scrollHeight as it runs, so it can accommodate some pages that grow during traversal. It can still miss content added after the loop has passed the point where that content appears. For those pages, repeat the traversal until the height stops changing or a time/iteration limit is reached, then run the image readiness check. A hard limit prevents an endlessly expanding feed from keeping the job alive indefinitely.

Choose the right capture and wait behavior
Full page versus one element
For the whole document, Page.screenshot({ fullPage: true }) is the straightforward capture option. For one known target, ElementHandle.screenshot() scrolls that element into view before capturing it. That convenience does not trigger every offscreen image across a long page. ElementHandle.scrollIntoView() is another option when you need to bring a specific element into view.

Network idle is supplementary, not proof
Page.waitForNetworkIdle() waits for network inactivity; its idle interval is a settling condition, not evidence that the page requested every lazy resource. Trigger loading first, then use image-specific checks. Network idle may be an additional wait when it suits the page, but it should not replace traversal or readiness checks.
During navigation, Puppeteer’s networkidle0 and networkidle2 lifecycle values refer to zero or two concurrent connections, respectively, sustained for 500 ms. See PuppeteerLifeCycleEvent. These describe network state during navigation; they are not a site-independent test that lazy images are ready.

Use targeted interactions for known content
Puppeteer’s interaction guide recommends locators for interactions and describes automatic checks such as viewport, visibility, enabled state, and stable bounding boxes for relevant actions. For a known image or component, targeted element operations can be clearer than sweeping the entire page. For broad coverage of offscreen images, programmatic traversal followed by a full-page capture is the more suitable pattern.

Timeouts, reliability, and capture cost
The example has fixed pauses but no overall deadline. Real pages can have slow or permanently stalled resources, and a page can keep adding content. Wrap the operation in an application-level timeout, cap traversal steps, and record image URLs that have naturalWidth === 0 after settling. This lets your capture job finish with useful diagnostics instead of hanging or silently treating missing images as successful.

There is a trade-off between coverage and time: smaller scroll increments and longer pauses mean more opportunities for viewport-triggered content to load, but also more traversal steps and waiting. Network-idle waits can add further delay and still do not guarantee image completeness. Choose the shortest traversal and checks that meet your page’s needs, and log the final document height and failed image URLs when debugging inconsistent results.
Troubleshooting missing images
- Images are blank near the bottom: the capture may have happened before those images approached the viewport. Run the traversal before taking the full-page screenshot.
- The wait completes but some images are absent: the code treats both load and error as settled. Check
naturalWidthand log failed image URLs to distinguish failed resources from successfully loaded images. - Network idle occurs but images remain missing: network inactivity does not establish that lazy images were requested. Trigger loading first and use image-specific readiness checks.
- New content appears after scrolling: recheck document height and repeat traversal within a bounded number of passes or deadline.
- A selected component is all you need: use an element screenshot or scroll the selected element into view instead of traversing the entire page.

Do not rely on it to request every offscreen image. Traverse the page first, then capture.
Should I wait for every image’s load event?
