Scroll the page to trigger viewport-based image loading, wait for the images you need to finish, then capture. Playwright’s fullPage: true includes the full document in the screenshot; it does not make deferred images load first. [Playwright screenshots]
Why images are missing from full-page screenshots
Lazy loading postpones some image requests until the image is near the viewport. As a result, the page’s load event can fire even though lazy images have not loaded yet. [MDN: Lazy loading] A full-page screenshot controls how much of the document Playwright captures, not whether every deferred resource has been requested or rendered. [Playwright: Screenshots]

The reliable sequence is: trigger loading by scrolling, check image readiness, and then capture. A fixed wait by itself is weaker: it gives the browser time, but does not establish that the required images succeeded.

async function loadImagesByScrolling(page) {
await page.evaluate(async () => {
const pause = (ms) => new Promise((resolve) => setTimeout(resolve, ms));
const step = Math.max(1, window.innerHeight);
let previousHeight = 0;
// Repeat because loading can add content or increase document height.
for (let pass = 0; pass < 10; pass++) {
const height = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
for (let y = 0; y < height; y += step) {
window.scrollTo(0, y);
await pause(100);
}
window.scrollTo(0, document.documentElement.scrollHeight);
await pause(250);
const newHeight = document.documentElement.scrollHeight;
if (newHeight === previousHeight) break;
previousHeight = newHeight;
}
});
await page.waitForFunction(() =>
[...document.images].every((img) =>
img.complete && (img.naturalWidth > 0 || img.currentSrc === '')
)
);
}
await loadImagesByScrolling(page);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'page.png', fullPage: true });
The complete property indicates that an image has finished loading, while naturalWidth helps distinguish a successfully loaded image from a broken one. For responsive images, currentSrc identifies the selected source. [MDN: <img> reference]
The code is illustrative. In production, set a finite timeout for the readiness wait and decide how to handle a broken or permanently pending image. If only a known group matters, scope the check to those image selectors rather than blocking capture on every image on the page. The loop’s ten passes are a stopping limit, not proof that an unbounded or continuously growing page is fully loaded.

Nested scroll containers
Scrolling window will not trigger a loader that listens to an inner element, such as a feed with its own scrollbar. Scroll that container instead and wait for a meaningful signal, such as the expected image or item count. Use the site’s normal interaction when loading depends on a particular control.

Infinite feeds and virtualized lists
These pages may never reach a natural end: new items can keep appearing, or off-screen items may be removed and reused. Set a deliberate stopping condition, such as a target item count or end marker. A full-page capture cannot restore content that the page has already virtualized away.

CSS backgrounds and other custom loaders
The example checks document.images, so it does not verify CSS background-image resources. Custom IntersectionObserver logic, carousels, and application-specific loaders may also need a selector-specific wait or an application readiness signal. Use an image success check suited to the content you need rather than treating a generic page event as proof.
Preserve scroll position and layout
If the screenshot must show a particular scroll position, record it before preloading and restore it after scrolling. Let the layout settle before capture. Images without reserved dimensions can shift surrounding content when they arrive; MDN recommends explicit image dimensions to reduce layout shifts during lazy loading. [MDN: <img> reference]

Choose the right readiness signal
- Fixed delay: simple, but only a time allowance; it cannot confirm image success.
- Image completion and success: useful for ordinary
<img>elements; check completion and, when required, a positivenaturalWidth. - Application-specific signal: preferable when a site has a known loading indicator, expected item count, or custom loader.
Playwright discourages using networkidle as a test readiness condition and recommends assertions tied to the state being tested. Network quiet can be a heuristic, but it is not proof that each desired image is ready. [Playwright: Page API]

Likewise, Playwright’s visual screenshot assertions wait for two consecutive screenshots to match. That helps stabilize visual comparisons, but matching screenshots do not establish that every image loaded successfully. [Playwright: Visual comparisons]

Troubleshoot missing images
- Images below the fold are absent: scroll through the page before capture; full-page mode alone does not trigger viewport-based loading.
- The wait never completes: add a finite timeout, inspect the images still incomplete, and define whether a failed image should stop or allow the capture.
- An image is complete but blank or broken: check
naturalWidth; completion alone does not guarantee a successful image. - Scrolling the window has no effect: locate the actual scrollable container or trigger the site’s required interaction.
- Images appear only after a carousel or tab interaction: reproduce that interaction, then wait for the relevant selector or image state.
- The screenshot layout shifts: wait for image arrival and layout stabilization; where possible, ensure the page reserves image dimensions.
- The page keeps growing: define a stopping rule for the feed instead of expecting a finite full-page capture to represent infinite content.

ScreenshotNeo provides a screenshot API and MCP server. Its clean-shot process accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses report the page verdict and billing status in headers. AI agents can use its MCP tools, including take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Does Playwright’s fullPage option load lazy images below the fold?
No. It captures the full scrollable document, but does not itself trigger deferred image loading.

No. It can be a heuristic, but it does not prove that the specific images you need loaded successfully.
