To capture Indian-language text correctly with Puppeteer, make sure the Chrome environment has fonts that include the page’s scripts, the document declares UTF-8 and accurate language metadata, and the page has finished rendering before you call page.screenshot(). Set a browser locale only when the page depends on locale-sensitive behavior: locale emulation does not install fonts or add missing glyphs.
Why Indian-language text can look wrong in a screenshot
Puppeteer captures what its browser renders. If Chrome cannot find a font with the required glyphs, characters may appear as boxes or otherwise fail to display as intended. A page can also render differently across browsers, operating systems, container images, and viewport sizes. Changing the locale is not a substitute for making the right fonts available.

- Choose the target viewport. Set the viewport to the dimensions and device scale factor you intend to use in production. Text wrapping and small-script legibility can change with viewport and resolution.
- Wait for the actual page content. Navigate, then wait for a meaningful selector or other page-specific signal that the content and styles needed for the screenshot are ready. A navigation event alone may not mean that client-rendered text or web fonts have finished loading.
- Check the font actually used. Inspect the affected element’s computed font family in the browser and check for font-loading or network errors. Confirm that a usable font is present in the deployed Chrome environment and covers the particular script on the page.
- Check document metadata. Prefer UTF-8 and accurate
langattributes on the document and relevant multilingual sections. Use embedded fonts when the same appearance across different environments matters. - Set locale only if needed. Configure locale separately when the site relies on language negotiation,
Intlformatting, or other locale-sensitive behavior. Locale settings do not establish font coverage. - Capture and inspect. Call
page.screenshot(), then examine the output at the target viewport and resolution. Validate representative pages and scripts in the same runtime you deploy.
The 2022 India Roadmap on Universal Acceptance and Multilingual Internet recommends UTF-8, language attributes, embedded fonts for uniform display, and locale-specific CSS handling. It also notes variation across browsers and platforms and potential difficulty on low-resolution mobile screens. These are practical considerations, not a current browser-support certification.

Runnable Puppeteer example
This Node.js example sets a deterministic viewport, navigates to a page, waits for a page-specific selector, and saves a full-page PNG. Replace the example URL and selector with ones appropriate to the site. Install Puppeteer in your project with npm install puppeteer; the package manages a compatible browser in the usual installation setup.

})();Waiting for document.fonts.ready gives the page’s font-loading process a chance to settle; it cannot make an unavailable font or glyph appear. If the page renders content after the selector appears, wait for a more specific readiness condition rather than adding an arbitrary delay.

Install and validate script-appropriate fonts in deployment
For a local machine, container, or CI runner, verify fonts where Chrome actually runs—not only on your development desktop. Choose font packages or embedded web fonts based on the scripts present in your target pages, then inspect rendered output. There is no single font package established here as covering every Indian language and script.
Puppeteer’s troubleshooting guide treats system dependencies and fonts as part of running Chrome in containers and gives examples for several major character sets. Those examples are not a complete Indian-language font matrix. The guide also notes that Chrome needs writable profile, configuration, and cache locations in read-only containers, and warns that Chrome is not supported on Alpine out of the box.

- Check that the deployed image includes fonts covering the exact text you capture.
- If a site supplies its own web font, confirm that the request succeeds and that the font is applied to the text.
- Test the actual target viewport and device scale factor; inspect small or low-resolution output for legibility.
- In containers, confirm Chrome can write to the directories it needs and use a supported runtime setup.
When locale emulation matters
Locale can affect language negotiation and browser APIs such as Intl; it is distinct from the fonts available to render characters. A third-party guide dated 16 September 2026 describes setting a Chrome DevTools Protocol locale override before navigation and separately discusses request language and navigator values. Treat its recipe as implementation guidance and check it against your installed Puppeteer and browser versions: Language and Locale with Puppeteer.
Do not add locale emulation merely to fix boxes or missing glyphs. First establish font coverage. If you need locale-specific dates, numbers, or content negotiation, configure and test those behaviors separately from font rendering.

Troubleshooting common screenshot problems

Performance, reliability, and cost considerations
Full-page captures can involve more page content than viewport captures, especially on long pages. Wait for the conditions needed for a faithful image, but prefer a meaningful readiness signal to a long fixed sleep. For repeatable results, keep browser version, font availability, viewport, and device scale factor consistent between test and production. The sources cited here do not establish a benchmark across Indian languages, font packages, or browser versions, so validate your own target pages rather than assuming a configuration works universally.
