To capture a Google results page in dark mode, change Google Search’s own appearance setting—not Chrome’s browser theme. On desktop, open Settings → See all settings → Appearance, select Dark theme, click Save, then capture the results page with your browser’s screenshot tool.
Turn on dark mode for Google Search
- Open Google and run the search you want to document.
- On the results page, open Settings → See all settings → Appearance. Depending on the layout, the Settings control may appear at the top left. Google’s Search settings help describes the available appearance choices.
- Select Dark theme, then click Save.
- Return to the results and confirm the page is dark before taking the screenshot. Device default follows your device’s current color scheme; Light theme restores a light background.
Google Search’s appearance setting applies to the Search homepage, results page, and Search settings. Google Search Product Support Manager Hung F. made that distinction explicit in a desktop announcement dated September 9, 2021.
Google Search dark mode is separate from Chrome’s theme
Chrome’s Dark theme changes parts of Chrome’s interface, such as the toolbar and settings; it does not, by itself, confirm that the Google results page is dark. Set the theme in Google Search’s Appearance settings. Chrome’s separate instructions are in Chrome Help.
If you want Google to retain the Search preference across desktop browsers, Google says to sign in while saving it. The saved setting applies in browsers where you sign in; it is not a guarantee for every unsigned session or browser profile.

Capture the visible results or the full page
Firefox’s built-in screenshot tool
Firefox can capture a selected region, the visible page, or a full page. Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot, or use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux and Command+Shift+S on macOS. Choose Save visible for the current viewport or Save full page to include content below the fold. You can download the image or copy it to the clipboard. Chrome and optional extensions
If you need a full-page image in Chrome, an optional extension is one route. The GoFullPage Chrome Web Store listing describes full-page capture and image or PDF output. Its listing includes a March 31, 2023 changelog entry about improvements involving Google Search. That is the vendor’s description, not a guarantee about how the extension handles every current results page. An extension is not required to enable Search’s dark theme.

Keep the screenshot useful as evidence
Search results can vary with the query and context, so a screenshot records a particular view rather than freezing a universal Google results page. For documentation or comparison, keep the query, capture date, locale, and browser context with the image. Capture only the visible viewport when that is all you need; use a full-page option when below-the-fold results matter.
If the appearance setting is missing or the page stays light
- Check the correct setting. Open Google Search settings from a results page and look under Appearance; changing Chrome’s theme alone is not the same setting.
- Confirm the choice was saved. Select Dark theme and click Save, then check the results page again before capturing.
- Verify the page and timing. Make sure you are viewing Google Search and take the screenshot only after the results visibly reflect the selected appearance.
- Check account context. If you expect the preference to follow you to another desktop browser, sign in while saving. Google’s stated behavior concerns browsers where you sign in, not every profile or unsigned session.
