You can reduce the effect of Google Account personalization before taking a screenshot, but no setting guarantees a universal results page. Google may still vary results by location, language, device and current or recent searches. For a useful comparison, turn off personalized recommendations or use Google’s one-search “Try without” option, then record the search context with the image.
What turning off personalization does—and does not—change
Google’s controls reduce account-based personalized recommendations; they do not make every person’s results identical. Google says results may still reflect contextual factors such as location, language, device type and current or recent searches. It also notes that sometimes results look the same even when personalization is turned off.

Describe the result as “shown without personalized recommendations” or “less account-personalized,” rather than neutral or universally representative. Google’s Search Help does not provide a current rate for how often results change when personalization is disabled.

Turn off personalized recommendations before searching
If you’re signed in
- Open Google Account personalization settings. Google’s Search services help page links directly to google.com/search-personalization.
- Turn off Personalized Recommendations, if the control is available in your account.
- Search the exact query you want to document. If the results page says “Results are personalized,” look for the “Try without” link to view that search without personalization.
The “Try without” view applies to that search; it does not change your saved setting.

If you’re signed out
- Open Google Search settings and turn off Search customization, if available.
- Run the exact query and check the results page for a personalization notice or “Try without” option.
Google says these settings are being updated and rolled out gradually, so the labels or controls you see may differ. If the new control is not visible, Search history and recommendations may still be controlled through Web & App Activity.
Use Incognito only as an extra step
Chrome Incognito starts a separate browser session and does not automatically sign you into a Google Account. It can help avoid using an already signed-in session, but it is not a substitute for Google’s personalization controls and does not guarantee identical or context-free results.

Incognito limits what Chrome retains on the device after all Incognito windows close; it does not make activity invisible to Google sites or network administrators. Downloads and bookmarks remain on the device.
Capture the results on Windows or Mac
Windows 10 or 11
- Leave the Google results visible at the size and scroll position you want to document.
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Select a rectangular region or window. Snipping Tool also offers full-screen and freeform captures.
- Open the capture notification to save or share the image.
Mac
- Leave the results visible at the desired scroll position.
- Press Shift-Command-4 and drag to select an area, or press Shift-Command-5 to open Screenshot.
- Use Screenshot’s options for a capture type, timer or save location, then take the screenshot.
Keep enough context for a meaningful comparison
A screenshot shows what appeared on one screen at one moment; it does not prove by itself that results were unpersonalized. When comparing or preserving evidence, keep a short record alongside the image:

- The exact query and capture date and time.
- The visible location, language, device and browser, where relevant.
- Whether you were signed in with Personalized Recommendations disabled, signed out with Search customization disabled, or used “Try without.”
- The results-page personalization notice, if one appeared.
Keep the browser window and results visible in the crop if those details matter to the comparison.

Why a screenshot may still differ from someone else’s
Personalization is only one source of variation. Google identifies location and other contextual signals as possible reasons people see different results. A 2017 study by Anikó Hannák and co-authors, involving 200 Google Web Search users, reported that 11.7% of results differed on average due to personalization; the authors found substantial variation by query and result ranking. That is a historical, study-specific figure, not a measurement of Google Search today.
