To capture gameplay already recorded on VHS, play the tape in a working VCR and record its analog picture and sound through a compatible USB video-capture device. Connect the VCR’s video and audio outputs to the device, select it in capture software, check the preview, then start recording and play the tape. The computer records the playback in real time; this is different from capturing gameplay directly from a live console.
What you need
- A working VHS VCR with video and audio outputs, plus the tape containing the footage.
- A computer supported by the capture device and its recording software.
- A USB analog video-capture device with inputs that match the VCR’s outputs. A USB connection by itself is not enough: the VCR’s analog signal must pass through a compatible capture device before the computer can save it as a digital file.
- Cables that match the available connectors. For composite video, that usually means yellow for video and red and white for stereo audio.
Elgato’s Video Capture documentation describes capturing from a VCR to Mac or PC using composite RCA or S-Video inputs, and its Quick Start Guide covers connecting the source, plugging the digitizer into USB, and installing the application. Those are examples of a supported setup, not a guarantee that every capture device will work with every computer. Check the device’s current operating-system support, required software, inputs, and supported video standards before buying.

Choose the connection that matches your equipment
Composite: the usual connection
Connect the VCR’s yellow video output to the capture device’s yellow video input. Connect the red and white audio outputs to their matching audio inputs. Make sure you use the VCR’s outputs, not its inputs; Diamond Multimedia’s VC500 guide specifically distinguishes the two.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →S-Video: only if both devices support it
If both the VCR and capture device have S-Video connectors, you can use S-Video for video and the red and white RCA connections for audio. The Canadian Conservation Institute’s VHS digitization bulletin describes this setup and notes a picture advantage over composite for its S-VHS connection example. A standard VCR or capture adapter may not have S-Video, so do not assume this option is available.

The basic signal path is VCR video/audio outputs → matching capture-device inputs → USB → computer software. A computer cannot turn the VCR’s analog RCA output into a file without the capture device.
Capture the tape with the supplied software or OBS
Set up the device and software
- Install the software supplied or recommended for the capture hardware. Connect the capture device to the computer and confirm that the software recognizes it. Some vendor applications guide setup through a wizard.
- Connect the VCR and capture device while matching output to input, then turn on the VCR and computer.
- Open the recording software and select the capture device and the input you actually connected, such as composite or S-Video.
Set up OBS, if that is your recording software
- In OBS, add a Video Capture Device source.
- Select the analog capture device, then choose the connected input. Hauppauge’s OBS instructions describe composite and S-Video input choices for supported devices; the available choices depend on the hardware. Diamond’s VC500 guide also documents an OBS workflow for that product.
- Check that the preview shows the tape’s picture and that the audio meter responds to playback. If either is missing, check the selected input, cable direction, audio-device selection, and software permissions. Consult the capture device’s current vendor troubleshooting guidance if the issue persists.
Record and inspect the file
- Choose a save location and recording format in the software.
- Start recording in the software, then press play on the VCR. Capture takes place as the tape plays.
- Stop recording when the segment ends and inspect the saved file for picture orientation, aspect, sound, and synchronization before committing to a long capture.
If you want the entire recording, let the tape play through for its duration. Capture settings and software support vary with the device, computer operating system, and regional video standard. Diamond’s VC500/VC500SE guide, updated September 29, 2026, gives 720×480 at 30 fps as an example for those products; it is not a universal setting. Elgato lists its own output formats and says its Video Capture detects NTSC, SECAM, PAL, and PAL/60. Confirm your device’s supported formats and the tape’s standard rather than assuming those specifications apply to other hardware.

Direct capture or an optional time-base corrector?
A direct VCR-to-digitizer connection is a documented basic setup. The Canadian Conservation Institute also documents a signal chain that includes a time-base corrector (TBC). A TBC is an optional advanced component in that chain, not a required purchase for every transfer. The available documentation does not establish that every tape or setup needs one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen a capture device is not the right route
If you do not have a working VCR, or would rather not manage playback and capture yourself, a professional transfer service may be an alternative if one is available in your area. No particular provider is established here, so check local services and confirm what formats and files they deliver. An HDMI capture card alone is not a substitute for a device that accepts the VCR’s analog composite or S-Video output.
