How to Capture Consistent Before-and-After Screenshots for Graphics Mod Comparisons

A reliable graphics-mod comparison starts with the same saved in-game view and changes only the mod state. Learn how to control framing, settings, HUD, capture quality, and motion-related effects.

To make a fair before-and-after comparison, load the same saved in-game view in both mod states and keep the camera, lighting, HUD, resolution, graphics settings, and capture method unchanged. Change only the mod state you are testing. That makes it easier to tell what the mod itself changed rather than what a different scene or setup changed.

Set up a repeatable in-game view

Choose a stable reference

Use a save, checkpoint, or location that reliably shows the asset or effect you want to compare. Capture in the game itself: editor and studio views may use different lighting or rendering and therefore may not show how the change looks during play. STEP Modifications recommends in-game captures for this reason (STEP Modifications screenshot guide).

Pick a view where the subject is easy to inspect. Before capturing, wait for temporary on-screen text, passing characters, or other transient elements to disappear. Align the camera and save the reference once the scene is ready.

Capture the unmodded baseline

  1. Load the vanilla or unmodded configuration.
  2. Open the reference save or return to the chosen location.
  3. Match the intended camera angle and framing, and check the lighting.
  4. Wait until temporary elements are gone, then save the view or record the exact steps needed to reproduce it.

For each later configuration, return to that same reference. Avoid moving the mouse or camera after loading if that can change the framing. STEP Modifications describes repeating captures across vanilla, guide, and testing profiles from a saved view.

Hold the other variables constant

Change one tested state at a time. Keep the following consistent between images:

  • Game and mod setup: use the same game version and record the graphics-mod version, load order, and any conflict-resolution details.
  • Scene: use the same save, location, time, weather, and lighting conditions where controllable.
  • Camera: match position, angle, zoom, and framing. If the game offers a way to save or reproduce a camera view, use it.
  • Display: keep resolution, aspect ratio, and graphics settings the same.
  • HUD: hide it in both images if the game or an established HUD mod allows; otherwise keep it visible in both.
  • Capture: use the same capture software and format for both states.

These controls follow STEP Modifications’ goal of making the asset replacement the only meaningful difference in the comparison. Record the setup alongside the images so viewers can understand what changed.

Capture and check the files

  1. Capture the baseline and modified state using the same method.
  2. Check that both files have the expected dimensions and that neither capture has an unexpected crop or framing shift.
  3. Compare the saved files with the in-game view to make sure the capture path has not visibly changed color or quality. STEP Modifications calls for captures that match the in-game image in color and quality.
  4. Keep the original full-resolution files. If a site compresses the displayed previews, the originals let readers inspect fine detail.

For a static texture or asset change, still images are often the clearest format. Present them side by side or with a before/after slider, and label each state so the viewer knows which configuration they are seeing.

Choose stills or video based on what changes

Stills are useful for comparing corresponding details in a fixed scene. They cannot show whether an effect flickers, ghosts, or changes during motion. For those behaviors, record matched footage with the same camera movement and scene conditions. NVIDIA notes that image-quality differences such as shadow-filtering flicker and aliasing can be more apparent as the camera moves (NVIDIA ICAT overview; NVIDIA Control graphics and performance guide).

  • HDR 10-bit: Pass-through and recording. Encoding: HEVC/H.265 HDR, AVC/H.264

NVIDIA ICAT can display up to four images or videos and supports side-by-side and slider comparisons, zoom, and spatial and temporal alignment. Use alignment to inspect corresponding regions; it does not make a still image evidence of temporal stability. When performance is part of the question, measure it separately and report the test setup: a screenshot alone cannot establish a performance result. NVIDIA’s guidance recommends comparing corresponding image-quality modes before comparing performance.

When higher-resolution capture is useful

Higher-resolution capture is optional, not a requirement for a fair comparison. A Steam Community guide describes enabling driver-level supersampling for Garry’s Mod so higher resolutions become available in-game. Its warnings are game-specific: Garry’s Mod’s tiled poster command can introduce seams or broken reflections, while higher resolutions can make the interface difficult to use or fail in borderless mode (Garry’s Mod supersampling guide). Do not assume those limitations apply to every game or engine.

There is also a particular capture-path issue with GPU-side scaling: NVIDIA says software capture may record the lower, pre-upscaled resolution when NVIDIA Image Scaling runs on the GPU. For that workflow, driver-level capture support or a capture card may be needed; NVIDIA names the Elgato 4K60 PRO MK.2 and AVerMedia Live Gamer 4K as examples. This is a narrow workaround for capturing GPU-upscaled video, not a requirement for ordinary still comparisons (NVIDIA ICAT overview).

Troubleshooting mismatched comparisons

  • The subject looks shifted: reload the same saved view and check camera position, angle, zoom, and aspect ratio. Avoid moving the camera after loading.
  • The lighting or shadows differ: verify time, weather, lighting conditions, and graphics settings. Capture from the game rather than an editor or studio render.
  • One image has extra characters or text: wait for transient elements to disappear in both states before saving or capturing.
  • The HUD appears in only one image: repeat the captures with the HUD hidden in both, if available, or visible in both.
  • The files differ in crop, dimensions, or apparent quality: use the same capture software and format, then inspect the original files and confirm their dimensions. Check whether the publishing platform has compressed only the displayed previews.
  • A high-resolution capture has seams or broken reflections: if you are using Garry’s Mod’s tiled poster command, the cited guide warns of those artifacts. Treat this as a Garry’s Mod-specific issue rather than a general screenshot limitation.
  • Software capture records a lower resolution than expected: if NVIDIA Image Scaling is doing GPU-side upscaling, the software capture may record the pre-upscaled image. NVIDIA describes driver-level capture support or a dedicated capture card as options for that workflow.
