To document a competitor’s search visibility, save two things: a screenshot of the search results page (SERP) showing the ranking, and a screenshot of the landing page reached from that result. Record the query, search engine, market, device or viewport, time, displayed result URL, and final URL after redirects. The paired evidence shows both where the page appeared and what visitors saw.
What to capture—and why two screenshots matter
A landing-page screenshot alone does not show how the page ranked. A SERP screenshot alone does not show the full experience at the destination. Keep them together, along with the URLs and capture context, so a later review can distinguish a ranking change from a page redesign or a change in the search results.

- SERP screenshot: documents the query results, visible rank, and any visible result features at the time of capture.
- Landing-page screenshot: documents the visitor-facing page. A viewport capture shows the initial view; a full-page capture includes content below the fold. Playwright supports viewport, element, and full-page screenshots in its screenshot documentation and Python screenshot documentation.
- Metadata: makes the evidence interpretable and repeatable. Save the query, engine, date and time, target market or location, device or viewport, result rank and type, displayed URL, final destination URL, capture mode, and browser state—including login and consent choices.
Capture competitor landing pages step by step
- Fix the search context. Write down the exact query, search engine, target market or location, device or viewport, and capture date and time. Search results can vary with these inputs; keep them consistent for later comparisons.
- Capture the SERP before opening a result. Save a screenshot that includes the relevant result and its visible rank. Record the result title and displayed URL. If useful, SERPshot’s Chrome Web Store listing describes SERP capture and position logging for Google and Bing, with query, engine, device, country, rank, and timestamp information; those are claims in the listing, not an independent performance evaluation: SERPshot listing.
- Open the actual result. Follow the result you documented rather than searching for the site separately. Record the final URL after redirects, since it may differ from the URL displayed in the SERP.
- Capture the landing page. Save a viewport screenshot for the initial visitor view. Add a full-page capture if below-the-fold layout or content matters. For comparison, use the same viewport, capture mode, and browser state across competitor pages.
- Pair and label the files. Store the SERP image, landing-page image, displayed and final URLs, and metadata together. A practical filename can include project or query, competitor domain, engine, market, viewport, date, and mode (for example,
project-domain-google-us-1440x900-2026-10-03-viewport.png). - Repeat under the same conditions. A later capture with matching settings gives you a dated comparison. Treat each capture as a record of one observation, not a permanent representation of the page or its ranking.

For a few results, inspect the SERP, save its screenshot, open each result, note redirects, and save the destination page in viewport and—when needed—full-page mode. This keeps the process straightforward, but you must record context and repeat the same steps yourself.

Playwright is useful when you need URL-based capture, controlled filenames, or repeatable viewport, element, and full-page screenshots. Its API supports navigation and page screenshots; consult the Page API for current options. This workflow automates landing-page capture, but does not by itself establish which result ranked for a query: retain the SERP evidence separately.

SERPshot for SERP archiving
The SERPshot Chrome Web Store listing describes full-page Google and Bing capture, result parsing, position logging, bulk queries, and metadata export. Availability and features may change; verify the current listing before relying on a capability. Its listing is a product description, not an independent evaluation.
Do not use Search Console as a competitor inspection shortcut
Google’s URL Inspection tool is for inspecting a page in the property owner’s Search Console context; a live test can show a screenshot of the page retrieved in that workflow. It is not a general tool for inspecting competitors’ URLs.

Keep comparisons fair and interpretable
Before comparing competitors or dates, check that the evidence records the same query, engine, geography, device or viewport, capture time context, and screenshot mode. Also retain result rank and type, the displayed URL and redirect destination, and browser state. If one page was captured at a different viewport or with a different consent choice, those differences can affect what the screenshot shows; do not interpret them as a page change without accounting for the capture conditions.

Troubleshooting capture problems
- The saved image does not match the SERP result. Confirm that you opened the result you recorded, then compare its displayed URL with the final URL after redirects.
- Two captures look different even though the page appears unchanged. Check viewport, full-page versus viewport mode, browser state, login status, and consent choice. Repeat with matching settings before drawing a visual comparison.
- Below-the-fold content is missing. A viewport screenshot only captures the initial view. Use a full-page screenshot when the rest of the page matters; Playwright documents this mode in its screenshot guide.
- You cannot reproduce the same rank later. Recheck and record query, engine, market or location, device, and time. The earlier SERP screenshot is evidence of that observation; it does not guarantee a later search will show the same results.

Can a landing-page screenshot prove where a page ranked?
No. It documents the destination page, not the SERP position. Keep a separate SERP screenshot with the query and rank.

Should I use Google Search Console to inspect a competitor’s page?
No. URL Inspection works in the context of a property owner’s Search Console account; its live-test screenshot is not a general competitor-inspection method.
