For a repeatable batch of website screenshots saved as JPEGs, use Playwright to loop through a list of URLs, set the screenshot type to JPEG, and give each output a stable filename. Choose viewport or full-page capture deliberately, set JPEG quality, and log failed URLs so you can inspect or retry them. If you prefer a configuration file, shot-scraper documents multi-URL jobs; R webshot accepts URL vectors and JPEG output for R workflows.
Choose a batch workflow
Batching URLs and choosing an image format are separate decisions. The right route depends on whether you want code, configuration, or an R package, and how much control you need over page loading and interaction.

| Route | Best fit | JPEG and batch details | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright API or CLI | You want browser automation with code or command-line control. | The Page API supports JPEG type, quality, output path, and full-page capture. The CLI supports JPEG filenames and full-page capture. The documentation cited here does not establish a performance winner or universal best choice. For a new scripted workflow needing explicit JPEG control, the Playwright API is a direct option.

Install Playwright and its Chromium browser using the official Playwright installation instructions for your language. The example below is an ES module for Node.js. It reads a JSON array of URLs, saves JPEGs to a destination directory, and records per-URL failures rather than stopping the entire batch.

Create urls.json:
["https://example.com", "https://www.iana.org/domains/reserved"]
Save this as capture.mjs:
import { chromium } from 'playwright';
import { mkdir, writeFile } from 'node:fs/promises';
const urls = JSON.parse(await (await import('node:fs/promises')).readFile('urls.json', 'utf8'));
const outDir = 'screenshots';
await mkdir(outDir, { recursive: true });
const browser = await chromium.launch();
const failures = [];
try {
const page = await browser.newPage({ viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 } });
for (const [index, url] of urls.entries()) {
const filename = `${String(index + 1).padStart(4, '0')}.jpg`;
try {
const response = await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'load', timeout: 30000 });
if (!response) throw new Error('Navigation did not return a response');
if (!response.ok()) throw new Error(`HTTP ${response.status()}`);
await page.screenshot({
path: `${outDir}/${filename}`,
type: 'jpeg',
quality: 80,
fullPage: false
});
process.stdout.write(`OK ${url} -> ${outDir}/${filename}n`);
} catch (error) {
failures.push({ url, error: String(error) });
process.stderr.write(`FAILED ${url}: ${String(error)}n`);
}
}
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
await writeFile('failures.json', JSON.stringify(failures, null, 2));
Run it with node capture.mjs. Output numbers identify processing order; for long-term archives, replace them with stable slugs or IDs from your source data so reordering URLs does not change the mapping. The script checks the main document response, but a successful response does not guarantee that every image, font, or third-party widget finished loading.
Choose viewport or full-page output
The example captures the current viewport. To capture the full scrollable page, set fullPage: true. Playwright’s screenshot API documents this option, and its CLI provides --full-page. API reference; CLI reference. Full-page images can be very tall; inspect output dimensions and file sizes before scaling up a large batch.
Set JPEG quality and scale
Playwright documents JPEG quality from 0 to 100, with a default of 80. The example sets 80 explicitly so the compression choice is visible in the script. Higher quality generally preserves more detail at the cost of larger files; compare a small sample at the quality level you need. Playwright’s CSS scale produces one image pixel per CSS pixel. Device scale can produce more pixels on high-DPI screens, which may increase image dimensions and file size. See the Page API options.

Prepare URLs, filenames, and output
- Put one absolute URL per entry in your input list and confirm the list contains no accidental duplicates or malformed addresses.
- Create a destination directory and decide on a naming scheme before capture. Use a stable site/page identifier rather than relying only on URL order when the files must remain traceable.
- Start with a small sample. Check that each JPEG corresponds to the intended URL, then inspect dimensions, compression artifacts, missing images, consent banners, and other overlays.
- Keep a failure log keyed by the original URL. Retry only failures after diagnosing them, rather than rerunning every successful capture.
For command-line control, Playwright’s screenshot CLI documents JPEG output through a .jpeg filename, custom filenames, and --full-page; consult its CLI documentation for the installed command’s current syntax.

Wait for the page you actually need
A page navigation completing is not the same as every visual element being ready. Some pages load images lazily, render content after JavaScript runs, or reveal content only after interaction. The R webshot documentation includes a configurable delay and notes that some assets need longer to display. webshot documentation.
- Use a deliberate delay or a wait-for-selector condition when a known element appears after navigation.
- For lazy-loaded pages, determine whether scrolling or other interaction is needed before taking a full-page screenshot; a basic navigation-and-capture loop does not guarantee every below-the-fold image has loaded.
- Use a small sample to identify pages that need special handling, and keep such exceptions associated with their URLs.
Use shot-scraper or R webshot instead
Declare multiple jobs with shot-scraper
shot-scraper documents YAML entries with a URL and output filename for each screenshot, plus the shot-scraper multi command. Its documentation also describes selecting jobs by output. This can make the URL-to-file mapping explicit in a maintained configuration file. The cited documentation’s examples name PNG, so verify JPEG support and syntax in the version you install before relying on a particular extension or option. shot-scraper documentation PDF.
Pass URL vectors to R webshot
If your existing work is in R, webshot documents vectors of URLs and output filenames, including JPEG extensions. It also documents viewport dimensions, selectors, and a delay setting. Confirm the syntax against your installed package version before running a large batch. CRAN webshot package PDF.
Troubleshoot common batch failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No file for one URL | Navigation timed out, the destination was unreachable, or the script exited on an unhandled error. | Keep a failure record per URL, inspect the error, and retry only after checking the address and connectivity. Increase the navigation timeout only when the page legitimately needs more time. |
| JPEG exists but images or content are missing | Assets had not rendered, content is lazy-loaded, or the page requires interaction. | Wait for a relevant selector or add a deliberate delay; handle lazy loading or interaction explicitly, then inspect a sample capture. |
| Screenshot cuts off below the fold | The capture used viewport mode. | Enable full-page capture if the entire scrollable page is required. |
| Files are too large or visibly compressed | Quality and pixel dimensions do not match the use case. | Test JPEG quality and CSS versus device scale on representative pages, then use the smallest output that retains the required detail. |
| Cannot tell which image belongs to which page | Filenames depend on list position or the output mapping was not recorded. | Use stable identifiers in filenames and retain the original URL-to-filename mapping. |
| A consent panel, bot check, or access restriction appears | The target site controls what the automated browser can access or display. | Respect the site’s access rules and terms. Do not treat screenshot automation as permission to bypass restrictions. |
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request returns an image or PDF; for a batch, you can call it once for each URL and choose a distinct output filename in your script. This cURL example requests JPEG output using the documented API parameter style; see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for parameters and setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can Playwright save screenshots as JPEG?
Yes. Set type: 'jpeg' in the Page API screenshot options, or use a JPEG filename with the documented screenshot CLI.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does full-page capture include every lazy-loaded image?
Not necessarily. Full-page capture covers the scrollable page, but lazy-loaded content may need scrolling, waiting, or other page-specific handling first.
