How to Capture and Inspect HTTP Traffic from an OBSBOT Tail 2 on Linux

Use the Tail 2’s network IP and a host-based TShark capture filter to record traffic on Linux, then inspect the pcapng file in Wireshark.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture HTTP traffic from an OBSBOT Tail 2 on Linux, put the camera and computer on the same local network, find the camera’s IP address, and use Wireshark or TShark on the Linux computer’s active network interface. Begin with a filter for the camera’s IP rather than guessing a port: OBSBOT documents browser access to the camera’s Web UI using an http:// address, but its Web UI guide does not specify an HTTP port or API paths. OBSBOT’s Web UI guide explains how to find the address and open the interface.

What you need before capturing

  • The Tail 2 and Linux computer connected to the same local network, as required for the Web UI workflow in OBSBOT’s guide.
  • The camera’s current IP address, available in OBSBOT Center’s device management or Obsbot Start’s device/network information.
  • Wireshark, or TShark for command-line capture. The examples below use TShark and save a pcapng file for later inspection.

OBSBOT’s current download listing names Windows and macOS versions of OBSBOT Center and lists the mobile Obsbot Start app; it does not list a native Linux version of OBSBOT Center. Linux capture here uses general-purpose packet-analysis tools and the Tail 2 network Web UI, not Linux OBSBOT Center. Check OBSBOT’s download page for current software and firmware listings.

Find the camera’s IP address and open its Web UI

  1. In OBSBOT Center, open device management and locate the Tail 2’s network information, or use Obsbot Start’s device/network information on a mobile device.
  2. On the Linux computer, open a browser and enter the camera’s IP address using the documented Web UI form, http://<camera-ip>. OBSBOT also documents access through the device name with a .local suffix.
  3. If prompted to log in, OBSBOT’s guide documents Admin as the default username and password and says a password-change prompt appears on first login. Treat that only as the guide’s documented default, not as a guarantee of the credentials on your camera; change the password when prompted.

The guide describes browser access but does not establish the Tail 2’s HTTP service port, API endpoints, or authentication headers. Do not assume a particular port or invent a device-specific API filter.

ip -br addr
sudo tshark -D

Choose the interface carrying the connection to the Tail 2—often a Wi-Fi interface if the computer is on wireless, or an Ethernet interface for a wired connection. Replace <interface> with the interface name shown on your system, and <camera-ip> with the camera’s actual IP address.

Record a short capture

sudo tshark -i <interface> -f 'host <camera-ip>' -w tail2.pcapng

This uses a host-based capture filter in libpcap capture-filter syntax, recording packets to tail2.pcapng. Start the command, reproduce the browser action or camera behavior you want to inspect, then stop capture with Ctrl+C. TShark supports live capture, interface selection, and writing capture files; see the TShark manual.

Its remarkable anti-shake prowess (down to ±0.003°) and Auto Levelling system guarantee consistently level and stable footage.

For a basic pass, capture around the specific action—for example, opening the Web UI or changing one setting—rather than leaving an unrestricted capture running. A host filter captures packets involving the camera address, not only HTTP, so it can also preserve useful connection context without presuming a protocol port.

Inspect the saved capture in Wireshark

  1. Open Wireshark and choose File → Open, then select tail2.pcapng.
  2. In the display-filter bar, enter ip.addr == <camera-ip> to show packets whose IPv4 source or destination is the camera. Display filters are applied while viewing an existing trace; they are distinct from capture filters used to decide what gets recorded. See the Wireshark display-filter reference and capture-filter reference.
  3. Look for packets Wireshark dissects as HTTP, then inspect request and response fields and any cleartext content in the packet details and bytes panes. If the observed connection is TLS-encrypted, an ordinary capture generally reveals network and TLS-level information rather than readable application bodies.

The Tail 2 Web UI’s documented browser address uses http://, so a request to that interface may be dissected as plaintext HTTP. That does not establish that every Tail 2 control connection, video stream, or other feature uses plaintext HTTP. Use authorized decryption material only where you are entitled to do so.

Choose where to capture

Approach When it fits What it can see Setup
Capture on the Linux host The Linux computer itself opens the Web UI or runs the client generating the traffic. Traffic that traverses that computer’s selected interface. It will not ordinarily see a conversation between two other devices that does not pass through the Linux host. Choose the host’s active interface and run TShark or Wireshark there.
Capture from a network mirror or TAP The Linux analyzer is not an endpoint on the conversation, or you need to observe traffic elsewhere on the network. Traffic delivered to the mirror port or TAP, according to the network equipment and configuration. Requires suitable managed-network equipment and configuration; this is standard network-capture practice, not a Tail 2-specific feature.

Check camera mode and keep useful capture notes

Before interpreting a quiet capture as a Linux problem, check the camera’s active output mode. OBSBOT says SRT mode disables UVC, RTSP, NDI, and Live Stream, and supports Wi-Fi or wired connections. A flow expected from one of those disabled output options may therefore be absent while SRT mode is active. OBSBOT’s SRT documentation describes those mode limitations.

For a capture you may need to compare or troubleshoot later, record the firmware version, camera mode, camera IP, Linux interface, capture time, and exact steps used to reproduce the behavior. OBSBOT’s download listing shows Tail 2 firmware v7.2.13.1 updated 2026-06-08 and notes device permission settings and VISCA-over-IP functions for starting/stopping recording and switching landscape/portrait. Those notes do not enumerate HTTP protocol changes, so they do not resolve the camera’s exact HTTP ports or API paths.
