To capture a website on a real iPhone while making it report a custom user-agent string, connect the iPhone to Safari on a Mac and change the user agent in that page’s remote Web Inspector. The page reloads with the override; then take the screenshot on the iPhone. Changing the user agent in the Mac’s own Safari settings does not change the user agent of a remotely inspected iPhone page.
What you need
- An iPhone running the page you want to capture.
- A Mac with Safari and Web Inspector enabled.
- A physical cable that connects the iPhone and Mac, or wireless debugging configured in Xcode.
For remote inspection, enable Web Inspector on both the iPhone and the Mac. Apple’s setup instructions are in Enabling Web Inspector.

Set a custom user agent for the iPhone page
- Enable iPhone Web Inspector. On the iPhone, open Settings > Safari > Advanced and turn on Web Inspector.
- Connect the iPhone. Connect it to the Mac with a compatible cable, or configure wireless debugging in Xcode. Once connected, the device should appear in Safari’s Develop menu.
- Open the remote page inspector. On the Mac, open Safari and choose Develop > [your iPhone] > [the page]. Select the page listed under the iPhone, not a Mac tab for the same website.
- Choose the user agent in the remote inspector. Open its device settings menu. Select a preset, or choose Other… and enter the custom user-agent string you need. WebKit describes this as the User Agent editor in its Safari Web Inspector update.
- Wait for the page to reload. Changing the remote page’s user agent reloads it. Check the reloaded page on the iPhone to confirm the content you wanted, then capture the screen using the iPhone’s screenshot controls.
Why the remote inspector matters
Safari on macOS has user-agent controls, but those apply to the Mac browser. WebKit explicitly notes that the general Develop-menu user-agent settings do not affect a remotely inspected iOS target. Use the device settings inside the remote inspector for a page running on the iPhone. See WebKit’s remote inspector documentation.

Choose a connection and user-agent option
| Choice | Use it when | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Physical cable | You want a direct connection between the iPhone and Mac. | The cable must be compatible with both devices. |
| Wireless debugging | You prefer not to connect a cable. | Configure wireless debugging in Xcode before selecting the iPhone in Safari’s Develop menu. |
| User-agent preset | A built-in choice matches the browser identity you need. | It changes the inspected page’s reported user agent. |
| Other… custom string | You need a particular user-agent value. | Enter the string in the remote inspector’s device settings menu. |
What a user-agent override does—and does not do
A user-agent override changes the browser identity string reported by the inspected page. It is a debugging aid, not complete emulation of another iPhone, browser, operating system, or device. Other capabilities and behavior can still differ.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple recommends using feature detection to enable or disable site functionality rather than relying on browser name or version in the user-agent string: Apple’s user-agent guidance.
Keep the override active
The remote inspector’s device settings apply to the inspected page and can persist across navigation while the inspector remains open and connected. They reset when the inspection session closes or the device disconnects. If you navigate to another page during the same session, verify that the intended user agent remains selected.

Troubleshooting
- The iPhone does not appear in Safari’s Develop menu: Confirm Web Inspector is enabled on the iPhone and Web Inspector is enabled on the Mac, then check the connection or Xcode wireless-debugging setup.
- The website still behaves like it is on the Mac: You may have changed the Mac tab’s user agent. Open the page under Develop > [your iPhone] and use that page’s remote-inspector device settings.
- The old content remains after changing the string: The page should reload when the override changes. Wait for the reload to finish and inspect the page on the iPhone again.
- The override disappeared: Check that the remote inspector is still open and connected. The setting resets when the session closes or the device disconnects.
- The page still does not look like another device: A user-agent string alone does not reproduce the other device’s full hardware, browser, or software behavior.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a screenshot generated from a URL rather than a capture of the live physical iPhone display, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API. It does not establish that a capture ran on a physical iPhone; its custom user-agent option sets the browser string used for the capture. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for available parameters.
