To capture an HTML file as it appears in Safari on your Mac, open it in Safari, frame the part you want on screen, then press Shift-Command-4, press Space, and click the Safari window. For a crop, drag over the area instead; for the whole display, press Shift-Command-3. These built-in macOS shortcuts capture the rendered screen, not the HTML source or the entire length of a scrolling page.
Capture the Safari window, a selection, or the whole screen
First open the HTML file in Safari and wait for it to render. Adjust the window size, zoom, and scroll position so the content you want is visible. What you capture is determined by what is on screen at that moment.

Capture the Safari window
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Press Space. The pointer changes to a camera.
- Click the Safari window. To omit its shadow, hold Option while clicking.
Capture only part of the page
- Press Shift-Command-4.
- Drag the crosshair around the area you want, then release.
- To cancel before completing the selection, press Escape. To reposition the selection without changing its size, hold Space while dragging.
Capture the entire display
Press Shift-Command-3 to capture the whole screen, including anything outside the Safari window. Apple Support describes the shortcut this way: “To take a screenshot, press and then release these three keys together: Shift, Command and 3.” See Apple’s Mac screenshot guide.

Use Screenshot for save options and capture settings
Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app controls. In Options, you can set a timer, choose where screenshots are saved, show or hide the pointer, and control the floating thumbnail. The default save location is the desktop unless you change it.

On supported Mac models running macOS Tahoe 26 or later, Screenshot options may include SDR (Most Compatible), saved as PNG, and HDR, saved as HEIF. Availability depends on the Mac model and operating system. If compatibility is the priority and the option is available, choose SDR/PNG.
Know what the screenshot does—and does not—include
A screenshot records the visible rendered display. The standard macOS capture modes documented by Apple are the whole screen, a selected portion, or a window; they do not provide a one-action capture of an entire long webpage extending below the viewport. For a long page, capture separate visible sections or use a different workflow. Do not mistake a window screenshot for a full-page export.

A screenshot is also different from saving the page. In Safari, File > Save As offers Web Archive and Page Source. A Web Archive saves graphics and keeps links working while destination pages remain available; Page Source saves only the HTML source. Neither creates a screenshot image. Some webpages may prevent saving displayed items. See Apple’s Safari page-saving instructions.

- Clean crop of visible content: use Shift-Command-4 and drag a selection.
- The Safari window as shown: use Shift-Command-4, then Space, and click the window.
- Screen context around the page: use Shift-Command-3.
- A retained webpage rather than an image: use Safari’s Web Archive or Page Source save option.
- An image already displayed on the page: Control-click it and choose Save Image to Downloads, Save Image As, or Add Image to Photos. Some images, including some background images, cannot be saved this way.
Preview is another built-in option: choose File > Take Screenshot for the entire screen, a selection, or a window. The capture opens in Preview for annotation, though the macOS Screenshot controls are the more direct route for this Safari task. Details on saving webpage images are in Apple’s Safari image guide.
