Install Selenium in your Python environment, make sure a supported browser is installed, and always close the WebDriver session with driver.quit()—including when capture fails.
Set up Python, Selenium, and a browser
The current Selenium Python bindings documentation lists Python 3.10 or newer and recommends installing or upgrading Selenium with pip. Use a virtual environment so the package is installed in the environment that runs your script. The Selenium project says modern versions generally use Selenium Manager to handle browser and driver installation, so manual driver downloads are usually unnecessary in supported configurations. - Open Terminal and move to your project directory.
- Create and activate a virtual environment, then install Selenium:
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate
python -m pip install -U seleniumInstall the browser you intend to automate on your Mac. The bindings support multiple browser implementations, including Chrome, Edge, Firefox, and Safari; setup and screenshot behavior can vary by browser. The runnable example below uses Chrome.
Capture the current browser window
Save this as capture.py and run it from the activated environment. Selenium’s save_screenshot method saves a PNG of the current window and returns a boolean indicating whether the file was saved. WebDriver Python API

Printing the resolved path makes it clear where to find the PNG. The finally block ensures the browser session is closed if navigation or saving raises an error.
Choose the capture scope and output form
Current window
driver.save_screenshot(path) captures the current browser window. It does not promise to include page content below the visible window. Use it for a viewport-sized capture.

Full-page capture is not established as a uniform method across browser engines in the Selenium documentation consulted here. Firefox’s Python API documents save_full_page_screenshot(path); check the current API for the browser you use before relying on it. Firefox WebDriver Python API
PNG bytes or base64
If you need screenshot data in memory instead of writing a file, Selenium also exposes get_screenshot_as_png() and get_screenshot_as_base64(). These return PNG data in different forms; consult the WebDriver Python API for method details. WebDriver Python API

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- Driver or browser startup error: Confirm Selenium is installed in the active Python environment and that the browser you chose is installed. Current Selenium versions generally use Selenium Manager for driver resolution; if automatic setup does not work in your configuration, review Selenium’s installation guidance for manual configuration options. - The PNG is missing: Check the script’s working directory and print
Path("screenshot.png").resolve(). Also check the boolean returned bysave_screenshot; the API documentsFalsefor an I/O error. - The capture stops at the visible window: That is the expected scope of the ordinary window screenshot. Use an available browser-specific full-document method or capture the relevant element; do not assume full-page behavior is identical across browsers.
- The browser stays open after a failure: Put
driver.quit()in afinallyblock so cleanup runs even when navigation or file writing fails.
