For a quick screenshot on Linux, run Chromium in headless mode with the --screenshot flag and the page URL:
chromium --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/
Chromium saves screenshot.png in the terminal’s current working directory. The executable may be named differently on your system; use the Chromium or Chrome binary installed on your machine.

Capture a page from the Linux terminal
- Open a terminal in the directory where you want the image saved.
- Run the command below, replacing the URL with the page you want to capture:
chromium --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/ - Find
screenshot.pngin the current working directory. Chrome’s command-line reference documents that--screenshotwrites that default filename there. Chrome Headless command-line reference.
If chromium is not recognized, try the executable name available on your installation. Chrome’s documentation uses chrome in its command-line example and google-chrome in its Linux Headless mode example. Chrome Headless mode.

Choose the viewport dimensions
Use --window-size=WIDTH,HEIGHT to set the headless window dimensions. For example, --window-size=412,892 captures at a narrow, phone-like viewport; use dimensions suited to the layout you need to inspect. The screenshot represents the viewport, not automatically the entire scrollable page.

Give the page time to load
Chrome’s CLI supports --timeout as the maximum wait in milliseconds before taking the screenshot. For example:
chromium --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 --timeout=5000 https://example.com/
This sets a five-second maximum wait; it does not guarantee that every asynchronous image, animation, or other dynamic content has finished rendering by then.

Capture a full page or automate repeated screenshots
The Chrome CLI reference documents viewport-sized screenshots and window dimensions, but does not document a full-page command-line switch. For full-page captures or repeatable scripts, Puppeteer provides a screenshot API with fullPage: true; that option defaults to false. Its guide also demonstrates navigating with a wait condition, saving an image, and capturing a particular element with ElementHandle.screenshot(). Puppeteer ScreenshotOptions · Puppeteer Screenshots guide.
A minimal Node.js example using Puppeteer:
const puppeteer = require('puppeteer');
(async () => {
const browser = await puppeteer.launch({ headless: true });
try {
const page = await browser.newPage();
await page.setViewport({ width: 1280, height: 900 });
await page.goto('https://example.com/', { waitUntil: 'networkidle0' });
await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png', fullPage: true });
} finally {
await browser.close();
}
})();
Install Puppeteer in your project using its current official installation instructions before running this script. The CLI is simpler for an occasional visible-viewport shot; Puppeteer is the documented route when you need full-page capture, element screenshots, or a repeatable navigation-and-capture workflow.

ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. Its one-request example returns an image; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options such as output format and full-page capture.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com/ -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Troubleshoot common capture problems
- “Command not found”: The binary name differs from the example or Chromium is not available on your PATH. Try the executable name installed on your Linux system, such as
google-chromeorchromeif applicable. - No screenshot where expected: The CLI writes
screenshot.pngto the current working directory, which may not be the directory containing your command or script. Change directories first or check the terminal’s current directory. - Content is missing or still loading: Increase
--timeoutto allow more time, while remembering it is only a maximum wait. For pages with asynchronous content, use Puppeteer and a suitable navigation wait condition, then adjust the script to wait for the specific content you need. - Only part of a long page appears: A viewport capture is not a full-page capture. Use Puppeteer’s
fullPage: true. - The layout looks unlike a phone or desktop: Set
--window-sizeto the dimensions you want to test. The capture reflects that viewport size.
