If the DevTools window is frozen but Chrome can still launch, open a terminal and capture the page in a separate headless Chrome process:
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/Replace chrome with your system’s Chrome or Chromium executable, and change the URL and viewport dimensions as needed. Chrome saves screenshot.png in the terminal’s current working directory. This bypasses the DevTools menus; it does not repair a hung browser.
Capture a page from the terminal
Run the command in a terminal or command prompt. Chrome’s command-line reference documents --screenshot for saving a rendered page image, and --window-size for setting the viewport. The documented example uses a 412 by 892 viewport; the command below uses 1280 by 900 as a practical desktop-sized example. Chrome Headless command-line reference.

Run
chrome --headless --screenshot --window-size=1280,900 https://example.com/, substituting the URL you need. -
Check the shell’s current working directory for
screenshot.png. If you want the file somewhere else, change to that directory before running the command. -
Open the image and check that the viewport and page state are what you expected. This command captures the requested viewport; it is not a full-page capture instruction.

The executable name varies by operating system and installation. If chrome is not recognized, use the installed Chrome or Chromium executable name or its full path. The exact command may depend on your operating system and installation.

When navigation does not settle, --timeout sets a maximum wait before Chrome captures the page, even if it is still loading. For example:
chrome --headless --screenshot --timeout=5000 https://example.com/The value is in milliseconds. A five-second cap can make the capture finish sooner, but content that appears later may be missing. Increase or decrease the wait according to the page, then inspect the image.

Pages that depend on timers
If a page’s content changes after a timer runs, Chrome’s --virtual-time-budget can fast-forward time-dependent code. Choose a budget that suits the page behavior and check the result; a budget does not guarantee that every site’s delayed content will appear as intended. Choose the right capture route

Chrome also supports --dump-dom, but that serializes the DOM after parsing and script execution; it does not create an image. Use it to inspect page state, not as a screenshot substitute. Chrome Headless command-line reference.
Automate captures with the Chrome DevTools Protocol
For a repeatable workflow, the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP) exposes Page.captureScreenshot. This still needs a running browser and a client that can connect to its debugging endpoint; it avoids relying on the DevTools UI for each capture, but it is not independent of Chrome itself.

Chromium documents launching Headless Chrome with --remote-debugging-port and connecting through chrome://inspect/. Its README also points to Puppeteer as a Node.js client for communicating with Headless Chrome. The protocol reference lists Page.captureScreenshot. If the whole browser process is hung or crashing, a separate process with a clean profile may be worth trying, but these references do not establish that it will resolve the problem. A protocol client cannot capture a page if it cannot connect to a working browser.

Avoid old guides that tell you to use --headless=old. Chromium’s README states that the old Headless implementation was removed from the Chrome binary as of M132, and that --headless=old has no effect. Users who specifically need old Headless are directed to chrome-headless-shell. Chromium Headless README.

Troubleshoot a failed capture

“Command not found” or equivalent: The shell cannot find the executable under the name
chrome. Try the Chrome or Chromium executable name used on your system, or provide its full path. -
No image where expected: The documented default is
screenshot.pngin the current working directory. Check the directory from which you ran the command. -
The image is incomplete: A timeout may have fired before late content appeared. Increase the wait or use a suitable virtual-time budget for timer-driven content, then inspect another capture.

DevTools is frozen and the command also fails: The fallback depends on Chrome being able to start and render a page. The available documentation does not identify the cause of a specific hang or guarantee that headless capture will work in every local environment. To diagnose further, note your operating system, Chrome version, executable path, and the exact terminal error.
