Rails’ built-in ScreenshotHelper serves a different purpose: capturing the browser during system tests, especially when a test fails.
Choose the right screenshot workflow
- Capture a URL as an application feature: use Ferrum to control Chrome or Chromium, then decide how your Rails app stores or returns the image.
- Capture your app during a system test: use Rails system tests and
ScreenshotHelper; this is intended for test debugging, not as a general endpoint for arbitrary URLs. - Use Capybara browser tests: Cuprite is a Capybara driver built on Ferrum, and can be used as a system-test driver.
The distinction matters: taking a screenshot of a test browser is not the same as accepting a URL from an application user and opening that external site.

Capture a URL with Ferrum
Ferrum’s documented workflow is to create a browser, navigate to a URL, save a screenshot, and close the browser. Ferrum controls Chrome or Chromium through the Chrome DevTools Protocol and does not require Selenium, WebDriver, or ChromeDriver. Install the Ferrum gem and make a Chrome or Chromium binary available using the project’s setup guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
browser = Ferrum::Browser.new
browser.go_to("https://example.com")
browser.screenshot(path: "example.png")
browser.quit
This is the browser capture step; it is not a complete Rails endpoint. In an app, put it behind an appropriate job or request flow and define where the resulting file should live. Rails and Ferrum do not prescribe one storage architecture for that application-specific decision.

Choose capture size, format, and destination
Viewport, full page, or a specific region
Ferrum captures the current viewport by default. Its screenshot API also documents full: true for a full-page capture, as well as selector- or area-based capture. Use viewport capture when the visible screen is the desired artifact; use full-page capture when the whole document is needed.
Image format
PNG is Ferrum’s documented default. The screenshot API also supports JPEG/JPG and WebP. Pick the format based on the consumer of the image and your storage or response requirements.
Path or returned image data
The API can write to a path or return image data, including base64. Saving to a path is straightforward for a local workflow; returning data gives the Rails app a value it can pass into its own storage or response flow.

Use Rails screenshots for system-test debugging
For a screenshot of your own Rails UI while a system test is running, Rails provides ScreenshotHelper. The Rails testing guide documents take_screenshot and automatic screenshots for failed tests. It also describes configuring the system-test driver to use Cuprite. See the Rails testing guide for the relevant system-test setup and helper details.
Cuprite is not a separate screenshot service: it is a Capybara driver based on Ferrum. This route fits browser-driven tests, while Ferrum used directly is the simpler shape for an application feature that navigates to a supplied URL. See the Cuprite project.
Production decisions for arbitrary URLs
A feature that accepts external URLs needs application-specific safeguards beyond the basic browser example. Before shipping it, decide how to validate destinations, prevent access to internal network addresses, limit navigation time, control concurrent browser work, manage browser lifecycle, and store or expire generated files. The Ferrum and Rails references establish the capture and test workflows, but do not define a universal safe production architecture for these controls.

- Restrict which URL schemes and destinations the feature accepts; do not treat user-supplied URLs as trusted.
- Set request and browser time limits appropriate to your app, and decide what the user sees when navigation does not finish.
- Bound concurrent work so screenshot requests cannot create unbounded browser processes or resource use.
- Define cleanup and access rules for saved images, especially if captures may contain private or user-provided content.
Troubleshooting
Chrome or Chromium cannot be found
Ferrum needs a Chrome or Chromium binary available to launch. Install or configure the browser binary for the environment running Rails, then follow Ferrum’s setup guidance. A development machine having a browser installed does not by itself establish that the app’s deployment environment can find one.
Navigation does not reach a usable page
Check that the URL is reachable from the machine running the browser and that the destination finishes loading within the time your app allows. For a URL-accepting endpoint, treat failed loads and timeouts as expected outcomes to handle rather than assuming every destination will render.
The screenshot is clipped or too large
Use the default viewport capture for the visible screen, or Ferrum’s full: true option for the full document. If only one component or region is required, use its selector- or area-capture option instead of capturing everything.
A system-test screenshot is confused with a URL capture
Rails’ helper captures the browser used by a system test. If the task is to visit an arbitrary external URL from an application feature, use a direct browser workflow such as Ferrum rather than expecting the test helper to act as a general screenshot endpoint.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Alternative browser automation
Playwright documents navigating a page to a URL and writing a screenshot, but its cited example is JavaScript rather than a direct Ruby API. It is an alternative browser-automation architecture, not a drop-in Ruby method for the Ferrum example. See the Playwright Page API.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does Rails include a built-in endpoint for screenshots of any URL?
No. Rails’ ScreenshotHelper is for screenshots from system tests; a URL-capture feature needs a browser workflow such as Ferrum or a screenshot API.
Can I use Ferrum without Selenium or ChromeDriver?
Yes. Ferrum controls Chrome or Chromium through the Chrome DevTools Protocol and does not depend on Selenium, WebDriver, or ChromeDriver.
