To capture a website screenshot on a monthly schedule, use browser automation such as Playwright to take the image, then run that code with a scheduler. For a self-managed setup, a cron expression such as 17 9 1 * * runs at 09:17 on the first day of each month in the scheduler’s configured timezone. Set that timezone deliberately: a recurring schedule is only useful if you know which local time it represents.
Choose what the monthly screenshot should capture
Before scheduling anything, decide what part of the page you need to preserve. Playwright supports a normal viewport screenshot, a full-page screenshot, and a screenshot of a particular element. The viewport is useful for a fixed above-the-fold view; a full-page capture records the scrollable document; an element capture isolates a component such as a chart or pricing panel. - Viewport: captures the visible browser area.
- Full page: captures the complete page rather than only the visible viewport.
- Element: captures a specific element selected from the page.
Also decide whether the page must be in a particular state. Login, clicks, consent prompts, or a page-specific element that loads late may require additional browser automation or a wait condition. A screenshot taken before the page reaches the intended state can be consistently wrong every month.

Here is a minimal Node.js example using Playwright. It opens a page, waits for it to load, captures the full page, and writes a date-based filename so each run can be archived separately.

})();Install Playwright and its browser runtime in the environment that will run the script, and create the screenshots directory or add code to create it. Replace the example URL with the page you want to capture. For a viewport-only screenshot, omit fullPage: true. For a specific element, locate it and call screenshot on that locator:

Some sites keep network activity open, so an unconditional network-idle wait may never complete; use an explicit timeout and a page-specific condition where possible.
Run it at the same time each month
Using cron
A five-field cron expression 17 9 1 * * means 09:17 on day one of every month, in the timezone configured for that cron service or machine. Confirm the scheduler’s timezone rather than assuming it follows your own local time. If using a Linux cron installation, a line like this runs the script from its project directory:

17 9 1 * * cd /path/to/project && /usr/bin/node capture.jsEnsure the Node executable path is correct for the account that owns the cron job, and send output to a log or monitoring destination so failures are visible. Cron environments may have a more limited PATH and environment variables than an interactive shell.
Using GitHub Actions
GitHub Actions supports scheduled workflows using cron syntax. Its documentation says scheduled workflows run against the default branch, so commit the workflow there. Scheduled workflows use UTC by default; GitHub also documents IANA timezone scheduling. Check the current GitHub Actions schedule documentation and set the desired timezone explicitly. For example, the cron portion can be expressed as:

GitHub warns that scheduled events can be delayed during periods of high load and that sufficiently overloaded queues may drop scheduled runs. It is not a guarantee of execution at the exact minute.

Keep the monthly archive useful
Save each run under a date-based filename and use storage that retains the images for as long as you need them. A recurring capture alone does not create a meaningful change-monitoring system: you still need to decide which image is the baseline, how to compare later images, and how to treat expected dynamic changes such as rotating content, timestamps, or personalized banners.

Run the capture in the same environment as the baseline where practical, and keep the viewport and capture scope unchanged.
- Check scheduler run history after the first scheduled run.
- Keep the monthly files rather than overwriting one fixed filename if you need a history.
- Configure a failure alert if missing a month would matter.
- Review the resulting image at least once to verify the URL, page state, dimensions, and saved path.
When a hosted monthly schedule is simpler
A hosted screenshot service can remove the need to maintain a browser runner, scheduler, and archive plumbing yourself. Allscreenshots documents monthly schedules, timezone selection, full-page and screen-size settings, element waits, hiding dynamic elements, CSS injection, stored results, and email or webhook delivery. Its guide says schedules count against a monthly screenshot quota; it describes webhooks on every plan and email as a paid feature on Starter and above. These are vendor-specific terms, so check the current Allscreenshots scheduled screenshots guide before relying on a particular plan or delivery method. The guide describes recurring schedules but does not promise exact-minute execution.

The job did not run
Check the scheduler’s run history and logs, the configured timezone, the cron expression, and whether the workflow is on the required default branch. For GitHub Actions, allow for documented schedule delays and possible dropped runs during high load; do not treat a scheduled event as an exact-minute guarantee.
The screenshot is blank or incomplete
Confirm the URL is reachable from the runner, the page has loaded before capture, and any necessary login or interaction has completed. Replace a broad load wait with a wait for a page-specific element when appropriate. If the page loads content only after scrolling, use full-page capture and verify that lazy-loaded content is available in the resulting image.

The image differs from last month
First check whether the page itself changed. Then compare the capture environment, including browser and operating system versions, viewport, and headless mode. Differences in rendering can come from the environment as well as the site, so stable comparison depends on keeping those conditions consistent.

Files are missing or being overwritten
Use a unique date-based filename, verify the scheduler’s working directory and write permissions, and ensure the destination is persistent. A runner’s temporary filesystem may not preserve files after a job ends; upload or copy images to storage designed to retain them.
