How to Capture a Website Screenshot at Mobile Width on a Windows PC

Set a mobile-width viewport in Edge or Chrome DevTools, then capture the visible screen or full page. Learn when Windows Snipping Tool is useful and what emulation cannot verify.

Use your browser’s DevTools to set a mobile-width viewport, then capture it from the browser. In Microsoft Edge or Chrome, device emulation lets you enter an exact width and choose between a screenshot of the visible viewport and one of the full page. Windows’ Snipping Tool can capture what is on screen, but it does not set the browser to a mobile width.

Capture a mobile-width screenshot in Microsoft Edge

  1. Open the website in Edge and open DevTools. One way is to right-click the page and select Inspect.

  2. In DevTools, turn on Toggle device emulation in the Activity Bar. The Device Toolbar opens in Responsive Viewport Mode.

  3. Enter the required width and height in the responsive viewport fields, or select a device preset if you need a particular device size. You can use the rulers to check viewport dimensions in pixels. If the requested viewport is larger than the available browser window, DevTools scales it to fit.

  4. Open More options > Capture screenshot to capture the visible viewport. Choose Capture a full size screenshot if you need the page content beyond the current viewport as well.

Microsoft documents these Edge controls in its Device Mode documentation.

Use Chrome instead

Chrome has a corresponding Device Mode flow: open DevTools, enable device emulation, and set or select the viewport. Use Capture screenshot for the visible viewport or Capture a full size screenshot for the whole page. Chrome also documents a device-frame option: in device-specific mode, enable Show device frame before capturing if the frame is part of the image you need. See Chrome DevTools Device Mode.

Choose viewport or full-page capture

If a specific width is required, enter its numeric value rather than estimating by eye. The screenshot represents the selected viewport; it is not a guarantee of how the site behaves on every phone.

Use Windows Snipping Tool for a screen crop

Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Choose a rectangle, window, or full-screen capture, then edit or save the result in Snipping Tool. This is useful for cropping the visible browser view after setting mobile emulation, but it captures the computer screen rather than producing a browser-level full-page screenshot. See Microsoft Support’s Snipping Tool instructions.

What mobile emulation does—and does not—show

DevTools produces a screenshot from a mobile-width viewport simulated in a desktop browser. It does not run the site on a physical phone. Microsoft’s Edge documentation states, “Device Emulation doesn’t actually run your code on a mobile device.” Use a real device or a separate real-device testing workflow when actual phone behavior matters.

For an automated screenshot, ScreenshotNeo takes a URL in one GET request and returns an image or PDF. Its API accepts options for mobile viewport dimensions, full-page capture, and output format; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation. For example, this cURL request saves a WebP screenshot:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, timeouts, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use screenshot tools, and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
