For a screenshot of a real iPad Pro, open the website in Safari, hold the iPad in portrait orientation, and use the device’s screenshot buttons. For a repeatable website-layout preview, use Safari Responsive Design Mode on a Mac and set a portrait tablet viewport. These are different results: a device screenshot records what appeared on the iPad, while a preview simulates a chosen size.
Choose the iPad Pro size and kind of screenshot
“iPad Pro portrait size” is not one universal measurement. Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines list these portrait layout dimensions, checked against the 2026 guidance:

These are points, not physical display pixels, CSS viewport dimensions, or guaranteed screenshot-file dimensions. A website’s visible area can also change with Safari’s browser controls. If someone needs to reproduce your capture, note the iPad model, orientation, Safari and iPadOS state, capture method, viewport where applicable, and saved format.

For a page that extends beyond the screen, use Safari’s Full Page capture rather than treating a viewport image as a full-page result.

Take a screenshot on the iPad Pro
- Open the website in Safari and let it finish loading.
- Hold the iPad in portrait orientation and wait for the page layout to settle.
- On an iPad without a Home button, quickly press and release the top button and either volume button together. On a Home-button model, quickly press and release the top button and Home together.
- Tap the screenshot thumbnail to crop or annotate. If you do nothing, Apple says screenshots are saved to Photos by default.
- For only the visible screen, keep the ordinary screenshot. For a longer Safari webpage, tap Full Page in the screenshot preview, review the capture, and save it as an image or PDF.
Apple documents Apple Pencil, AssistiveTouch, and voice command as other screenshot methods. They are optional; the button shortcut does not require an accessory. Apple’s guide describes the Full Page option for content longer than the iPad screen: Take a screenshot on iPad.
Preview an iPad-sized layout on a Mac
- In Safari on the Mac, open the page you want to inspect.
- Open Safari’s Developer tools and enter Responsive Design Mode.
- Select an iPad-sized portrait viewport or enter the target dimensions you want to test. Inspect the resulting responsive layout.
- For a more accurate preview, use Apple’s documented Open with Simulator option.
- Capture the preview using the Mac or Simulator capture method. Label it as a preview if it did not come from a physical iPad.
A responsive preview is useful for checking a chosen layout size, but it is not proof of how a particular physical iPad and Safari version rendered the page. Use the actual iPad when the deliverable must document real-device behavior.

Troubleshooting and reproducibility
- The buttons do not take a screenshot: Press and release the buttons together promptly rather than holding them. Use the top button plus a volume button on a model without Home, or top plus Home on a Home-button model.
- The screenshot shows only what fits on screen: Open its preview and choose Full Page for the longer Safari webpage capture. The ordinary screenshot is the visible-screen capture.
- The website looks different from the target tablet: Confirm the preview is portrait and uses the intended viewport. A Mac responsive preview and a real iPad capture are different methods; use the device if actual Safari rendering matters.
- The output dimensions do not match the advertised device dimensions: Check whether you are comparing points, CSS pixels, physical display pixels, or image-file pixels. They are not interchangeable; include the model and capture method when sharing the result.
- The Mac preview is not representative enough: Apple recommends opening the page in Simulator for a more accurate preview. A physical iPad remains the clearest choice for documenting the actual device.
