How to Capture a Website Screenshot at a Specific Device Pixel Ratio in Chrome Headless

Set Chrome Headless’s device pixel ratio from the command line or explicitly through CDP, and verify the resulting screenshot dimensions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a quick one-off capture, set Chrome’s viewport and pass --force-device-scale-factor=N. For repeatable automation with an explicitly controlled device pixel ratio (DPR), use the Chrome DevTools Protocol (CDP): call Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride with the viewport dimensions and deviceScaleFactor, then capture with Page.captureScreenshot.

Choose the capture method

Method Best for DPR control
Chrome command line A quick, one-off screenshot Uses --force-device-scale-factor=N; convenient, but less explicit than a CDP metric override.
Chrome DevTools Protocol Scripted, repeatable browser automation Sets deviceScaleFactor directly alongside emulated device dimensions.

Set the CSS viewport dimensions and DPR separately. A 1280-by-800 viewport at DPR 2 is not the same configuration as a 2560-by-1600 CSS viewport.

Take a quick screenshot from the command line

With Chrome installed and its executable available as chrome in your shell, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
chrome --headless
  --window-size=1280,800
  --force-device-scale-factor=2
  --screenshot=shot.png
  https://example.com

Change --window-size to the requested browser window dimensions and --force-device-scale-factor to the desired DPR. Chrome’s Headless command-line reference documents --screenshot and --window-size; the --force-device-scale-factor switch is described in Chromium issue documentation, including its effect on screenshots and window.devicePixelRatio.

Logitech Brio 101 Full HD 1080p Webcam for Streaming and Meetings - Black | 1080p with auto-light correction, built-in mic, privacy shutter, USB-A, compatible with Teams, Google Meet, Zoom and more
  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)
  • Privacy with a Slide: The integrated webcam cover makes it easy to get total, reliable privacy when you're not on a video call
  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

Chrome’s CLI reference says --screenshot saves screenshot.png in the current working directory by default. This example supplies shot.png explicitly. The documented --window-size=412,892 example illustrates the dimensions syntax. See Chrome Headless command-line reference and Chromium issue documentation for the scale-factor switch.

Wait for a page that is still loading

You can add --timeout=5000 to capture after waiting up to five seconds:

chrome --headless
  --window-size=1280,800
  --force-device-scale-factor=2
  --timeout=5000
  --screenshot=shot.png
  https://example.com

This is a maximum wait, not proof that every image or asynchronous component has finished. For pages that render content dynamically, use an automation-level readiness condition rather than assuming a fixed delay is sufficient.

Set DPR explicitly with CDP

For a script that needs direct control over emulated device metrics, send Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride, then request a PNG with Page.captureScreenshot. The example below shows the protocol calls; client must be an established CDP client connected to the target page.

await client.send('Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride', {
  width: 1280,
  height: 800,
  deviceScaleFactor: 2,
  mobile: false,
});
const { data } = await client.send('Page.captureScreenshot', {
  format: 'png',
});

// Decode the returned base64 data and save the bytes as a PNG.
const png = Buffer.from(data, 'base64');
await writeFile('shot.png', png);

The CDP protocol definition describes deviceScaleFactor as the override for device scale factor; a value of 0 disables the override. The command also overrides device dimensions and values relevant to window dimensions and device-width/device-height CSS media queries. Consult the CDP Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride definition and Page.captureScreenshot definition.

Use the same calls from Puppeteer

In Puppeteer, create a CDP session for the page’s target and send the same protocol commands through that session. The exact session setup depends on the Puppeteer version in use; keep the metric override and screenshot calls above as the protocol-level steps, and follow the matching version’s Puppeteer API for connecting the session.

Verify the DPR and output dimensions

Do not infer the image’s pixel dimensions solely from the requested viewport. Capture mode, page content, and Chrome version can affect screenshot bounds. Check both the actual PNG dimensions and the page’s reported DPR in the environment you run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Inspect the PNG’s width and height with an image viewer or image-processing utility.
  • Evaluate window.devicePixelRatio on the captured page to confirm the browser’s effective DPR.
  • If either value differs from expectations, check whether the capture is viewport-sized or full-page and confirm which Chrome executable and version ran.

Viewport screenshots and full-page screenshots are different

A normal screenshot captures the visible viewport; it does not automatically include the entire document. If you need a full-page image, select and verify a full-page capture method separately. Treat the viewport dimensions and DPR as device emulation settings, and full-page behavior as a separate capture choice.

When to use virtual screen configuration

--screen-info configures the virtual display and its properties. That is broader than ordinary DPR emulation with --force-device-scale-factor or CDP’s deviceScaleFactor. Chrome documents --screen-info as available in stable Chrome starting with version 142; use it when you need virtual-display configuration, not merely a specific emulated DPR.

Troubleshooting

The screenshot has the wrong pixel dimensions

First check the captured PNG’s actual bounds and whether you requested a viewport or full-page capture. Then verify that the requested viewport and DPR reached the running Chrome instance. A viewport size is not itself a DPR setting.

window.devicePixelRatio does not match the target

For the CLI, confirm that --force-device-scale-factor=N is present on the Chrome launch command. For CDP, confirm that Emulation.setDeviceMetricsOverride was sent to the page’s active target with the intended deviceScaleFactor; the protocol’s value 0 disables the override.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Images or dynamic content are missing

A fixed --timeout only waits up to the specified duration; it does not guarantee that page resources or asynchronous rendering are complete. In automation, wait for a page-specific readiness condition before calling the screenshot method.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. One GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it accepts the parameter names other screenshot APIs use. Its API supports retina scale, viewport sizes, device presets, and full-page capture with lazy images loaded. For an API call, set scale to the retina scale you need; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for the available parameters.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers report the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
