Set the browser viewport to 390 pixels wide by 844 pixels high before loading the page, then capture the visible viewport at CSS scale. In Playwright, that means configuring the viewport, leaving full-page capture off, and setting scale: 'css'. The saved image will be 390 × 844 pixels: one output pixel for each CSS pixel.
Capture a 390 × 844 viewport with Playwright
For repeatable screenshots, use Playwright. Create a browser context with the required viewport dimensions, navigate to the page, and take a screenshot without enabling fullPage:

})();Replace https://example.com with the page you need. The context viewport controls the page’s layout area; scale: 'css' makes the screenshot use one image pixel per CSS pixel. Playwright’s default screenshot scale is device-based, so specify CSS scale when exact output dimensions matter. See the Playwright Page API.
Set the viewport on an existing page
If you already have a page, call page.setViewportSize({ width: 390, height: 844 }) before navigating, then take the screenshot with scale: 'css'. Playwright notes that setting the page viewport also resets the screen size. Use browser-context settings when you need more control over screen and viewport properties.

Use Chrome DevTools for a manual capture
- Open the page in Chrome and launch DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode.
- Set the viewport width to
390and height to844. - Open the Device Mode menu and choose Capture screenshot for the visible viewport.
Do not choose Capture full size screenshot if the deliverable must be exactly 390 × 844: that option captures the entire scrollable page. Chrome’s Device Mode documentation explains viewport simulation and the separate viewport and full-size screenshot options.
Viewport pixels are not always device pixels
The 390 × 844 values specify the CSS layout viewport. A device scale factor controls how many device pixels correspond to a CSS pixel and can make an image captured at device scale larger than 390 × 844. Playwright’s scale: 'css' avoids that mismatch for this exact output size; scale: 'device' uses device pixels instead.

If you are trying to imitate a particular physical phone, dimensions alone do not define the whole device profile. You may also need to configure device scale factor and other emulation properties such as screen size, touch capability, or user agent. Playwright describes these parameters in its device emulation documentation. The Chrome DevTools Protocol exposes device metrics, including width, height, and device scale factor, in its Page reference.
Choose the method that fits the job
- Use Playwright when captures need to be automated or repeated consistently.
- Use DevTools Device Mode for a quick manual screenshot without writing a script.
- Check the output dimensions if a downstream tool requires an exact 390 × 844 file; viewport size and screenshot scale both matter.

Troubleshooting exact dimensions
- The image is taller than 844 pixels: Full-page capture may be enabled. Omit
fullPageor set it tofalsein Playwright, and choose the visible-viewport capture in DevTools. - The image is larger than 390 × 844: The screenshot may be using device-pixel scale. Set Playwright’s screenshot
scaleto'css'. - The page layout does not look like the intended phone: A viewport size alone does not emulate a complete physical device. Configure a device profile or the relevant screen, scale factor, touch, and user-agent settings.
- The capture has the wrong viewport: Set width and height before navigation, or confirm that the page’s current viewport was set to 390 × 844 before taking the screenshot.
