Dismiss a site-built modal overlay
Most website modals are HTML and CSS elements within the page. Use a locator for the intended action—such as a Close, Reject, or Accept button—then wait for the overlay to become hidden or detached before taking the screenshot.

});Replace the dialog role, button name, and action with the ones the site actually exposes. If the overlay is not marked up as a dialog, use a stable locator specific to the application. A consent notice may require an explicit choice such as “Reject” or “Accept”; choose according to the test’s purpose rather than treating every notice as a generic close action. Playwright documents locator-based interaction and recommends it over the discouraged page.click() method. See the Page API.
expect(modal).toBeHidden() is a Playwright Test assertion. In a plain Playwright script, wait for the locator’s hidden or detached state before capturing. Avoid using an arbitrary delay as proof that the overlay is gone: it can make a test slower without ensuring the desired state.

Handle a browser-native JavaScript dialog
JavaScript alert(), confirm(), prompt(), and some beforeunload confirmations are browser-native dialogs, not page elements. Register a handler before the action that triggers one, and accept or dismiss it there:

A registered listener must handle the dialog; leaving it unresolved can stall the triggering action. If there is no page or browser-context dialog listener, Playwright automatically dismisses dialogs. Add a handler when the test needs to control or verify the choice. Keep screenshot tests stable
For a visual comparison in Playwright Test, toHaveScreenshot() waits until two consecutive screenshots match before comparing them. That stabilization behavior belongs to the assertion workflow; it is not required for a one-off page.screenshot() save. The PageAssertions API documents screenshot assertion options.

Screenshot animation handling has its own behavior: the documentation says finite animations are fast-forwarded to completion, while infinite animations are canceled to their initial state and then played over after the screenshot. Check the API options for your installed version when animation state matters to the result.
Troubleshoot modal and capture failures
- The click times out: Check that the modal appeared and that the locator matches the actual accessible role and button name. If the site does not expose dialog semantics, target a stable application-specific element.
- The screenshot still contains the overlay: Do not rely on a fixed sleep. Wait for the modal to be hidden or detached after the dismissal action, and ensure the chosen action actually closes it.
- The triggering click hangs after a native dialog opens: Register a
dialoglistener before clicking, and callaccept()ordismiss()within it. A registered but unhandled dialog can stall the action. - The test captured only the visible portion: Set
fullPage: truewhen the full scrollable document is required. - A consent prompt is not closing: It may require a specific choice rather than a close button. Locate and click the action that matches the scenario being tested.
