Choose the capture mode to match the record you need: use a full-page screenshot for the complete scrollable document, or a viewport screenshot with the footer visible when you need to preserve how it appears on screen. A footer’s CSS positioning and the page’s print styles can change what appears in a full-page image or PDF, so inspect the saved output before using it as documentation.
Choose what the documentation needs to show

These modes are not interchangeable. A full-page screenshot is not a guarantee that a footer will appear exactly once or in the same position it occupies in the live viewport. If that specific on-screen state is the evidence, capture it in the viewport.

Check whether the footer is fixed or sticky
Inspect the footer’s computed CSS position and relevant inset values, such as bottom. A fixed element is removed from normal document flow and is generally positioned relative to the viewport in visual media. A sticky element remains in normal flow until it reaches its sticking threshold; it is then positioned in relation to its nearest scrolling ancestor and containing block.
That ancestor matters: an element with overflow: hidden, overflow: scroll or overflow: auto can affect the area in which sticky positioning operates. This helps explain why the footer can differ between a viewport capture, an expanded full-page screenshot and printed pages. MDN also notes that fixed-position elements are placed in the same position on every printed page.
Capture a complete page with Playwright
For an automated full-page image, Playwright’s documented API is page.screenshot() with fullPage: true. A regular screenshot captures the current view unless full-page behavior is selected.

Choose a screenshot scale
Use CSS-pixel scale when a smaller image is more useful: one output pixel corresponds to one CSS pixel. Use device scale when you need pixels at the device pixel ratio, for example for a higher-density image. Check that text and details remain readable at the chosen scale.

If the documentation is about one component, use Playwright’s element screenshot mode instead of saving the entire page. Locate the element and call screenshot() on it:

Prepare the page, including lazy-loaded content
Wait for the page’s visible content to settle before capturing. The browser’s load event alone does not prove that every below-the-fold image is ready: images using loading="lazy" may be deferred until they approach the viewport. Scroll through a long page when necessary so deferred visual content can load, then capture and inspect the result at full size.

- Open the target page in the browser or Playwright session used for the record.
- Identify the intended output: viewport, full page, element or PDF.
- Check the footer’s positioning and any relevant scrolling ancestor if its placement is important.
- Wait for content, bringing lower-page lazy images into view when needed.
- Capture the image using the appropriate mode and options.
- Open the saved file and verify completeness, footer placement, legibility and unexpected gaps or repeated overlays.
Use a PDF when pagination is part of the record
Playwright’s page.pdf() renders using print CSS media by default. A site’s print stylesheet may hide or alter elements, and print rules can set page size, orientation and margins. A PDF is therefore useful when you need a paginated artifact, but it should not be treated as a copy of the screen layout.
If you need a screen-style PDF, emulate screen media before creating it:

Verify the artifact before attaching it
- Confirm the page content is complete, including deferred images near the bottom.
- Check that the footer is legible and in the intended position.
- Look for repeated overlays, blank sections or unexpected gaps.
- For a PDF, confirm the print layout and pagination preserve the evidence you need.
- If full-page capture does not preserve the desired on-screen footer state, save a separate viewport screenshot with the footer visible.

Does a full-page screenshot show a sticky footer exactly as it appears on screen?
Not necessarily. Positioning and page implementation can affect the result, so inspect the image and make a viewport capture if the visible footer state is essential.
Why is a lazy-loaded image missing from my capture?
A page’s load event may fire before below-the-fold lazy images load. Scroll the page to bring those images into view, wait for them to render and capture again.
