Capture a mobile website screenshot in Chrome DevTools
- Open the website in desktop Chrome, then open DevTools.
- Turn on Device Mode with the device toolbar control.
- Choose a device preset, or select Responsive and enter the CSS viewport width and height you want to test. Rotate the simulated device or adjust its dimensions to check landscape layouts.
- Wait for the page to load and for important images or dynamic content to appear. Check that the page uses its mobile layout rather than displaying a desktop page scaled down.
- Open the Device Mode options and choose Capture screenshot for the current viewport, or Capture a full size screenshot for the entire page, including content below the fold.
- Repeat for the viewport sizes in your test matrix. Record each width and height and whether the capture is viewport-only or full-page.
Chrome’s Device Mode documentation describes viewport simulation and both screenshot options. Its guidance calls Device Mode a “first-order approximation” of a mobile experience: it is useful for repeatable layout checks, but it does not run the page on a phone or reproduce every mobile-device characteristic.

Choose Android viewport sizes without inventing an India ranking
A phone’s physical resolution is not the same as its CSS viewport size. The viewport is what responsive layouts and CSS media queries generally use; the device pixel ratio (DPR) maps CSS pixels to physical screen pixels and can affect the captured image’s pixel dimensions. Note the configured CSS width and height, DPR when image dimensions matter, and capture type so someone else can reproduce the result.
The available official sources do not establish which Android models or browser viewport widths are most common in India. To make a representative test plan, use your own audience analytics or a named, current device study, and state which one informed your choices. If you do not have that evidence, describe the widths as selected test points rather than “India’s most common sizes.” Android Developers recommends testing varied screen sizes and aspect ratios; the Android guidance also notes that Android Emulator can emulate a broad range of screen sizes.

Build a reproducible test matrix
- Pick widths from your site’s measured audience data when available.
- Include the layouts and breakpoints your site is meant to support; check portrait and landscape where they matter.
- Record viewport width × height in CSS pixels, DPR if relevant, browser or test environment, and whether the image is viewport-only or full-page.
- Use the same recorded dimensions for repeat captures after a CSS change so the before-and-after comparison is meaningful.
If the mobile capture looks like a tiny desktop page
Check the page’s viewport declaration before assuming Device Mode is set incorrectly. Android web-app guidance explains that many Android browsers, including Chrome, use a large viewport by default. A responsive page should declare a device-width viewport and use CSS media queries to adapt its layout.

When to use DevTools, an emulator, or a real Android phone

Use DevTools for early layout iteration, then validate important findings on a real or remotely accessed device when device-specific behavior matters.

Take a screenshot directly on an Android phone
If you need a screenshot of the site as it appears on your own phone—not a reproducible simulated viewport—use the phone’s screenshot controls. Google’s Android screenshot and screen-recording instructions explain the device-side process; exact controls can vary by phone.

Choose Capture a full size screenshot from Device Mode options when you need content below the fold. The regular screenshot captures the viewport currently shown.

Images or dynamic content are missing
Wait for the page and important content to finish loading before capture. For content that appears only after scrolling or interaction, check the relevant page behavior rather than treating an early screenshot as a complete rendering.
The page is scaled down instead of using a mobile layout
Inspect the viewport meta tag and responsive CSS. Android browsers may use a large default viewport when the page does not declare a device-width viewport.

The image dimensions differ from the CSS dimensions
Check DPR. CSS viewport dimensions describe the layout area; DPR relates those CSS pixels to physical image pixels. Record both when exact output dimensions matter.
Frequently asked questions
Can Device Mode prove how a page behaves on every Android phone?
No. It is a useful approximation for layout work, but handset behavior should be checked on an actual or remotely accessed device when it is important.
