How to Capture a Website as an Animated GIF with an API

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture a website as an animated GIF, use a capture service whose documentation explicitly supports animated output—requesting GIF from a still-screenshot endpoint will not create motion. Choose a URL-to-GIF endpoint, set its supported duration and frame rate, and save or retrieve the resulting file. If you need to capture a person’s actual screen or interaction instead, use the browser’s Screen Capture API; that requires user permission and is a different workflow.

Choose an endpoint that actually records motion

Animated capture is an endpoint capability, not a file-format conversion applied after a single screenshot. A still-image endpoint can return PNG, JPEG, or WebP, but those formats alone do not mean it records successive frames. Before writing code, confirm that the provider documents a URL-to-GIF or animated-capture endpoint and check its output format, recording limits, load-wait options, and quota rules.

Three distinct approaches answer different needs:

  • Hosted URL-to-GIF API: the service visits a URL, records it for a configured interval, and returns or makes available a GIF. ScreenshotCore documents this kind of GET endpoint and a six-second, 12-FPS curl example. Its documentation lists duration from 1 to 30 seconds and frame rates from 5 to 60 FPS, with defaults of 5 seconds and 24 FPS. Those are ScreenshotCore’s documented values, not universal API limits or independent recommendations. Its guide also says video captures consume more quota than screenshots. ScreenshotCore
  • Animated screenshot endpoint: Capture documents an animated endpoint that returns GIF only, supports duration up to 30 seconds, and offers controls such as wait conditions, viewport, dark mode, cookie-banner and ad blocking, and mobile device emulation. Its documentation describes a generated-hash URL pattern involving an API key and secret. Follow its current authentication guidance; do not expose a secret in public browser-side code. The GIF-only restriction applies to that endpoint, not to all capture services. Capture
  • Browser screen capture: the Screen Capture API asks the user to select a display surface and provides a MediaStream. It is for capturing a user-authorized screen, not for having a server visit an arbitrary URL. MDN: Screen Capture API

Provider documentation and endpoint behavior can change. Confirm current parameters, authentication, plan quotas, terms, and data-handling details in the provider’s own documentation before deploying. The documented settings do not establish that one service is faster, more reliable, or visually better than another.

Plan the capture before making the request

Set the target and view

Choose the page URL and the viewport or device profile that matches the output you need. A desktop-width capture and a mobile-emulated capture can show different menus, layout breakpoints, and content. Capture documents mobile emulation options; check its current device keys rather than assuming a remembered key remains supported. If a provider does not document viewport or device controls, do not assume the endpoint can reproduce a particular device.

Wait for meaningful page state

Navigation completing does not necessarily mean a page is ready to record. JavaScript applications may render after the initial document load, and images or other content may appear later. Prefer a documented wait condition—such as waiting for a selector or network idle—when the page needs time to become useful. Capture documents selector waits. Cloudflare Browser Run documents network-idle and selector waits for its screenshot rendering. A screenshot action that returns one image is still not a GIF endpoint. Cloudflare also says Browser Run requests are identified as bots, so a destination site may restrict or challenge them. Cloudflare Browser Run documentation

Choose a deliberate duration and frame rate

Record only as long as the meaningful page change takes. A longer recording or higher frame rate can increase the resulting file size and processing requirements; that is a general engineering trade-off, not a quantified provider guarantee. Start within the specific endpoint’s documented limits, then inspect the output in the actual destination where it will be displayed. GIF is suitable for short loops, but it is not a substitute for a video format when you need long, high-detail footage or audio.

Send a hosted GIF capture request

Use the provider’s animated endpoint and its documented parameter names. ScreenshotCore’s guide illustrates a GET request configured for six seconds at 12 FPS and saves the returned capture as animation.gif. Its documented range and defaults are provider-specific: 1–30 seconds, 5–60 FPS, defaulting to five seconds and 24 FPS. ScreenshotCore’s cited guide does not establish a current endpoint URL, authentication parameter names, or a complete runnable request syntax, so do not copy a guessed URL or credentials pattern. Retrieve those exact details from the provider’s current API guide before running a request.

  1. Get an API key and current endpoint instructions. Use the account and API documentation for the provider you selected; verify whether it returns GIF bytes directly or returns a job/file reference.
  2. Set the page URL and GIF format. Use the explicit animated endpoint or documented format parameter. Do not send a still screenshot request and expect it to animate.
  3. Set duration, frame rate, and viewport. Keep all values within that endpoint’s current documented limits. Add a load wait or device emulation only if the endpoint supports it.
  4. Send the request from a protected environment. Keep API secrets on a server or in a secret manager, not in public HTML or client JavaScript.
  5. Check the response before saving it. Confirm the response is successful and contains a GIF or a reference to the completed file. Do not blindly write an error response body to a file named .gif.
  6. Validate the result. Open the GIF and confirm that it contains multiple frames, shows the intended state, and has dimensions and a duration suitable for its destination.

Where the API returns the GIF body directly, save those bytes as a binary file. Where it returns an asynchronous job or hosted-file reference, follow the documented polling or download flow instead. The cited provider documentation does not establish a universal response format, so treat this as a point to verify rather than assume.

Use browser screen capture only for a user’s display

The browser Screen Capture API is appropriate when a user must choose a tab, window, or display and you need a live stream of that selection. A website-URL capture service is the better fit when a backend should visit a supplied page without asking a user to share a screen. The browser API requires permission and recent user activation; it is not a way to bypass a site’s access controls or silently record a visitor.

The API’s getDisplayMedia() call returns a MediaStream, not a finished GIF. A full application must handle the permission flow, record or process the stream, and encode the resulting frames into an animated image. The cited browser API documentation does not specify an encoder or a complete browser-to-GIF implementation, so a finished GIF workflow needs an additional encoding step selected for the application’s browser and server environment. Consult the browser API documentation for current permission and stream behavior.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, but it returns a screenshot or PDF—not an animated GIF. It cannot replace the animated endpoint above when the requirement is motion. For a static page image, one GET request can capture a URL; the available formats include PNG, JPEG, and WebP. The request below saves a WebP screenshot of the example page, not a GIF. See the ScreenshotNeo website and API documentation for request details.

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed; its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots; and the Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, while paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Troubleshoot common capture failures

The file is a still image or is not a GIF

Check the endpoint, not just the requested filename or MIME-type expectation. A screenshot endpoint returns a still image unless its documentation explicitly describes animation. Confirm the response content type and inspect whether the resulting file has multiple frames. If the service uses a separate animated endpoint, switch to that endpoint and its required parameters.

The page looks blank or misses late content

The capture may have started before the application rendered. Add a documented selector wait or network-idle wait where available, or use an appropriate delay if the provider supports it. Choose a selector that represents the content you need rather than an arbitrary element that appears immediately. Cloudflare’s documentation warns that JavaScript-heavy pages and single-page applications can be incomplete if captured before rendering finishes.

The site blocks the request

Destination sites may challenge automated traffic, require authentication, or deny access. Cloudflare states that Browser Run requests are identified as bots; this does not mean every site will block them, nor that every request will succeed. Use only pages you are authorized to access, follow the provider’s documented authentication options, and do not treat a CAPTCHA or bot check as a rendering delay to evade.

Authentication or generated-hash URLs fail

Verify the provider’s current signing procedure, key/secret pairing, URL encoding, and required query parameters. Capture documents a generated-hash URL pattern involving an API key and secret, but the exact current construction should be taken from its own instructions. Keep the secret out of public client code and logs.

The capture uses more quota than expected

Check whether the service counts recording time, frames, or video jobs differently from still screenshots. ScreenshotCore’s documentation says video captures consume more quota than screenshots, but no current plan prices or universal consumption multiplier are stated in ScreenshotCore’s cited documentation. Consult the current account quota and pricing terms before scaling a repeated capture job.

The GIF is too large or slow to process

Reduce duration or frame rate within the provider’s supported range, and record only the interaction or visual change needed. Longer and higher-frame-rate output generally means more frame data to process and deliver. The cited documentation does not establish a particular file-size reduction, quality level, or performance benchmark, so inspect the actual result rather than relying on a promised size.

Production checks: reliability, cost, and permissions

  • Make rendering deterministic: use a stable page state and documented wait conditions; dynamic ads, live content, and asynchronous requests can change what appears during a recording.
  • Handle failures as failures: check status and content before saving, and implement timeouts and bounded retries according to the provider’s API guidance. Do not count a bot challenge or error page as a successful animation.
  • Budget by the correct unit: confirm whether an animated job consumes more quota than a screenshot and how duration or frame rate affects usage. Only ScreenshotCore’s relative higher quota use for video is established here; current prices and specific billing formulas are not.
  • Protect credentials and captured data: keep API keys and signing secrets server-side. Check the service’s retention and data-handling terms for pages that contain personal, private, or authenticated content.
  • Respect destination restrictions: permission to call a capture API is not proof that you may reproduce or redistribute the target site’s content. Check applicable site terms, rights, and privacy obligations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I turn a PNG screenshot into an animated GIF by changing its extension?

No. Renaming a still-image file changes its name, not its contents; animation requires multiple frames encoded into a supported animated format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can an API capture a page that requires a login?

That depends on the endpoint’s documented support for authentication and on the destination site’s access controls. Verify both before designing the workflow.
