The best web archiving tool in 2026 depends on what you need to preserve. Use the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine when you need an existing public snapshot; ArchiveWeb.page when you can browse a site manually and want a private local capture; Browsertrix for automated or recurring crawls; and ArchiveBox when you want a self-hosted, multi-format archive under your own control. No tool guarantees that every script, login state, or interaction will replay perfectly, so inspect important captures before relying on them.

These are workflow recommendations, not a tested league table. Capture quality varies with site behavior, permissions, authentication, navigation and configuration. A completed crawl is evidence of processing, not proof that every page or interaction was preserved.
Why preserving a site matters
Pages disappear or change without notice. In a May 17, 2024 report, Pew Research Center found that 38% of webpages collected in 2013 were no longer accessible when checked in 2023. Across pages collected from 2013 through 2023, 25% were inaccessible as of October 2023. Pew’s measure focused on pages judged no longer to exist; it did not measure every kind of degradation or whether a particular archive captured a page.
For anything consequential—research, evidence, a public record, or a business hand-off—save more than a URL. Keep the archive files, metadata, capture date, source URL and notes about login or interactive steps. Reopen the result in a compatible viewer and record what worked and what did not.

ArchiveWeb.page: manual, interactive capture
What it does
Webrecorder describes ArchiveWeb.page as a Chrome extension and standalone desktop application for archiving while you browse. Captures are saved locally, remain private unless you share them, can be viewed offline and can be exported as WARC or WACZ. The product page lists version 0.17.1, released September 4, 2026, with macOS, Windows and GNU/Linux downloads.
When it fits
- You know which pages, menus or application states matter.
- The site requires clicks, scrolling or other browser actions that a URL-only fetch would miss.
- You need a local copy before sharing or publishing anything.
Browse deliberately: open each important route, expand tabs, trigger lazy-loaded content and wait for network activity to settle. The archive can only include requests generated by the session. ArchiveWeb.page integrates with Browsertrix so a manually captured session can be uploaded to an organization to patch an automated crawl.
Privacy and storage
Local capture means you are responsible for disk capacity, permissions and backups. An external drive can be useful for large collections or a second copy, but capacity depends on what you collect and a single drive is not a complete preservation strategy.

Plan the crawl
- Define the scope: domains, URL patterns, depth, exclusions and a stopping condition.
- Decide how authentication will be handled and whether credentials can legally and safely be used.
- Set crawl limits and scheduling appropriate to the site’s size and terms.
- Run a small pilot, inspect its replay, then expand the scope.
- Review processing status, coverage and failed or stopped items before treating the collection as complete.
Browsertrix archived items support interactive replay and quality-assurance review. Documentation says items use WACZ and can move between Webrecorder tools and external systems that support WACZ. An incomplete or stopped crawl contains only pages reached before it stopped, so retain the status information with the archive.

ArchiveBox: self-hosted, multi-format preservation
Capabilities
ArchiveBox is open-source, self-hosted software for public and private content. It accepts URLs and scheduled imports from bookmarks or browser history, and offers a CLI, REST API, webhooks, browser extension, web interface and filesystem access. Listed outputs include HTML, PNG, PDF, TXT, JSON, WARC and SQLite.
Where it is strongest
ArchiveBox is a practical general-purpose collection for a person or team that wants files on infrastructure they control. Its project documentation positions it as neither the simplest nor the highest-fidelity choice for every case: browser-driven Webrecorder tools are better suited to complex interactive pages, while Browsertrix is aimed at more advanced recursive crawling. Those are project characterizations, not independent benchmarks.
Operational checklist
- Provide persistent storage and a backup that is separate from the primary host.
- Restrict access to private captures and protect any imported credentials or personal data.
- Document software versions, import sources and retention rules.
- Periodically test that archived files and viewers still work after upgrades.
Wayback Machine and other public services
The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine is the natural first stop when you want to see whether a public historical snapshot already exists. It solves lookup, not necessarily fresh capture, private storage or complete interactive preservation. Current official Wayback materials were not available for a fair feature comparison here, so verify present coverage, access behavior and capture details directly.

Formats: WARC, WACZ and practical portability
WARC is a preservation format used by the Library of Congress and other organizations. WACZ is used by the Webrecorder project and packages web-archive data for portable workflows. Browsertrix documentation specifically supports moving WACZ items among compatible Webrecorder tools and external systems that support WACZ.

Portability is conditional: an export is useful only if another viewer can read it and the required indexes or resources are present. Keep the original package, checksum it, record the software used for replay and test an import before deleting the source collection.
Rhizome’s December 15, 2025 Conifer announcement offered users choices to keep Rhizome hosting, download and self-host, transfer collections to Browsertrix or delete them. It described WACZ as packaging WARC data, curated bookmarks and descriptions, and full-text search indexes, with a stated June 2026 availability milestone. Check the current Conifer notice or your collection dashboard before making migration plans.

How to archive a site reliably
For a single interactive workflow
- Install ArchiveWeb.page from the official Webrecorder product page.
- Start a new local collection and capture the landing page.
- Navigate every important route; click controls, expand sections and scroll through lazy content.
- Stop only after network activity and downloads finish.
- Export WARC or WACZ, then replay the export offline and note missing assets.
For a whole site or recurring snapshot
- Use Browsertrix and define allowed domains, URL patterns, depth and exclusions.
- Test authentication and robots or platform restrictions with a small crawl.
- Run the scheduled or larger crawl within documented limits.
- Inspect completed, stopped and failed processing states and use the review tools on representative pages.
- Export or publish the WACZ only after checking coverage and replay.
For a private local library
- Deploy ArchiveBox on storage you control.
- Import URLs, bookmarks or history through the CLI, API, extension or web interface.
- Choose output and retention policies, including WARC where portability matters.
- Set access controls and automated backups.
- Restore a sample archive periodically to verify that your preservation process still works.

Troubleshooting common archive failures
Blank or partially rendered pages
Cause: JavaScript, delayed requests, blocked resources or an interaction you did not trigger. Fix: wait for a selector or network idle, scroll and click through the state, then recapture. For crawls, test a small scope and inspect failed requests.

Missing images or media
Cause: lazy loading, separate media domains, request blocking or expiring URLs. Fix: trigger lazy content, allow required domains and preserve the original capture metadata. Verify playback or image URLs during replay.
Login-only content is absent
Cause: the crawler had no valid session, the session expired or access controls prevented capture. Fix: configure authentication only where authorized, test it on a narrow crawl and never place credentials in shared archives.
A crawl stopped early
Cause: limits, errors, infrastructure or a deliberate stop. Fix: treat the result as partial, read the processing status, adjust scope or resources and rerun. Do not label it complete solely because an export exists.
The archive will not open elsewhere
Cause: the viewer does not support the format or required indexes. Fix: use a WARC or WACZ-compatible viewer, retain the original package and test migration with a copy.
Cost, performance and stewardship
Current comparative prices, crawl quotas, storage limits and retention terms are not established by the available sources. Confirm them directly for any hosted service, including Browsertrix. Hosted crawling reduces infrastructure work but makes account limits, service status and export procedures important. Self-hosting avoids a hosted dependency but shifts installation, storage, monitoring, security and backup work to you.

For large jobs, begin with a representative pilot, constrain scope and schedule crawls to avoid wasting resources on irrelevant URLs. For long-term preservation, keep at least two copies in separate locations, document access permissions and periodically replay samples. Legal permission to capture or republish copyrighted, personal or login-restricted material depends on your jurisdiction and agreement; the tools themselves do not grant those rights.
FAQ
Can a successful crawl prove that a site is fully archived?
No. It proves only that configured processing reached the recorded items. Dynamic routes, hidden states, authentication and failed resources can still be missing; replay and QA are required.
Is WACZ interchangeable with WARC?
No. WACZ is a package used by Webrecorder workflows, while WARC is the underlying preservation format in many systems. Use software that explicitly supports the format you plan to open.

Should I archive a site publicly or privately?
Choose based on permissions, sensitivity and purpose. ArchiveWeb.page saves locally and privately unless shared; self-hosted tools let you configure access. Public publication can expose personal or copyrighted material.
Do I need an external hard drive?
Not always. It is optional for local tools and can provide extra capacity or a second copy. Hosted users do not need one, and one drive alone is not a robust backup plan.
