To capture a page protected by HTTP Basic Authentication, use a screenshot API that accepts the target site’s username and password in a documented authentication field. Cloudflare Browser Run supports this through an authenticate object on its screenshot endpoint. If you want to run the browser yourself, configure Playwright’s httpCredentials on a browser context before navigating.
First check that the site uses an HTTP authentication challenge—not a login form built into the page. Those are different mechanisms and require different handling.
Check which kind of login protects the page
HTTP Basic Authentication is a browser-level challenge: the server requests credentials before serving the protected page. It is not the same as a website’s HTML login form, which typically establishes an application session. A site’s session cookies are another distinct case.
The examples below address HTTP Basic Authentication. If the site presents an application login form, use that application’s supported authentication flow or establish its required session; supplying Basic Auth credentials alone is not established as a solution.

Capture an authenticated page with Cloudflare Browser Run
Cloudflare documents a screenshot endpoint at POST /accounts/{account_id}/browser-rendering/screenshot. The Cloudflare API token authorizes your request to Cloudflare. The target site’s Basic Auth username and password belong in the request’s authenticate object; they are not interchangeable credentials.

Wait for the content you need
A completed navigation does not necessarily mean a JavaScript-heavy page has finished rendering. Use the endpoint’s documented navigation or selector-wait options, including gotoOptions where appropriate, to wait for a meaningful page state. Then inspect the image to verify it shows the intended content rather than a challenge, login prompt, or error page.

Cloudflare also documents cookies as a separate way to access pages that require a session. That can be relevant to an application-authenticated page, but it is not the same as HTTP Basic Authentication.

With self-managed browser automation, pass the target credentials as httpCredentials when creating the browser context. This example uses Node.js and Playwright’s documented context and page APIs. It is an implementation of those API patterns, not a claim of a live test.

})();Install Playwright and its browser before running the script, and set TARGET_USERNAME and TARGET_PASSWORD in the runtime environment rather than writing secrets into the source file. If page content loads asynchronously, wait for a selector that indicates the content is ready before taking the screenshot. The fullPage: true option requests the full scrollable page; omit it to capture the current viewport.

Protect credentials and troubleshoot failed captures
Use HTTPS and keep secrets out of code and logs
Basic Authentication encodes credentials; Base64 is not encryption. RFC 7617 says the scheme is not considered secure unless used with an external secure system such as TLS. Use an HTTPS target, put credentials only in the API’s documented field or the browser context setting, and avoid printing secrets in logs. See RFC 7617.

For hosted capture, distinguish the provider API token from the target site’s credentials: the token goes in the provider’s authorization header, while the target credentials go in authenticate. For Playwright, supply target credentials through runtime configuration rather than committing them to source.
Common symptoms and fixes
- The screenshot shows a login form. Confirm the site uses an HTTP Basic Auth challenge. If it uses an HTML application login, Basic Auth credentials will not establish that application’s session.
- The screenshot shows a challenge or access-denied page. Check that the credentials are for the target site, not the screenshot provider, and inspect the captured image and available response status information.
- The page is present but incomplete. Wait for a page-specific selector or suitable rendering state before capture; initial navigation may finish before client-side content appears.
- The request is rejected by the screenshot service. Verify the Cloudflare account ID, API token, endpoint, JSON structure, and placement of each credential. The provider token authorizes the API call; it does not authenticate you to the target website.
- The target requires a returning session. Use the session mechanism the site requires, such as its supported cookies flow, rather than treating session authentication as HTTP Basic Authentication.
