Browserbase MCP lets an MCP-compatible AI client control a cloud browser, but the current setup documentation does not list a screenshot tool. Configure the documented server, confirm which tools your client actually exposes, and do not rely on the old browserbase_screenshot call: Browserbase’s v3 release notes say it was removed.
What Browserbase MCP can—and cannot—confirm
Browserbase describes its MCP server as cloud browser automation using Browserbase and Stagehand, and its product overview mentions screenshot capture. However, the current setup page lists six tools—start, end, navigate, act, observe, and extract—without a dedicated screenshot tool. The official v3 release notes say browserbase_screenshot was removed. The reviewed documentation does not identify a replacement MCP screenshot invocation, so there is no verified current screenshot command to give here. You can still set up the hosted browser and ask your agent to navigate to a page. Before asking it to capture an image, inspect the tools and schemas exposed by your actual server version; use a screenshot call only if that version documents one.

Browserbase recommends the hosted Streamable HTTP option for most users. It avoids running the MCP server locally. You need an MCP-compatible client and a Browserbase API key from the Browserbase Dashboard. Use your client’s MCP server configuration interface; exact field names vary by client.

- Choose Streamable HTTP as the transport, if your client offers a transport selector.
- Set the server URL to
https://mcp.browserbase.com/mcp. - Configure authentication. Prefer an HTTP header if the client supports custom headers:
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_BROWSERBASE_API_KEY. The server also acceptsx-bb-api-key. - Save and reload or refresh the MCP connection. Browserbase’s setup guide recommends refreshing the client to verify tool availability.
- Inspect the available tools and their input schemas before using them. Confirm that the list includes the current navigation tools and check whether your deployed version exposes a documented screenshot capability.
Treat the API key as a secret: do not paste it into an untrusted conversation, commit it to a repository, or expose it in a public configuration. If your client cannot send authentication headers, Browserbase documents the browserbaseApiKey query parameter as a deprecated compatibility fallback. Prefer a header when possible.
Navigate to the page with the agent
Once connected, ask the agent to use the exposed navigate tool to open the target URL. For example: “Navigate to https://example.com and tell me when the page has loaded.” The exact arguments depend on the schema your client displays, so have the agent follow that schema rather than assuming a particular parameter shape.

After navigation, ask the client to show the tools it can currently call and their descriptions. If a screenshot tool is present, verify its name and input schema against the documentation for that server version before invoking it. The setup page’s tool list alone does not establish a screenshot call.
Hosted HTTP or local STDIO?
The hosted endpoint is the recommended starting point for most users. The setup documentation also describes a local STDIO approach; choose it when your MCP client or environment needs a locally run server or you need to operate or customize that setup. The sources do not establish that one approach exposes a screenshot tool when the other does not.

What to do if no screenshot tool appears
Do not call browserbase_screenshot on the assumption it still works: the v3 release notes list it among the removed tools. The product overview’s general screenshot statement is not enough to establish a current MCP method. Check the installed server version’s tool list and schema, then consult the corresponding official documentation or release notes. If no documented screenshot tool is exposed, the supported steps verified here stop at browser navigation; do not ask the agent to invent a tool name or parameters.
Troubleshooting
- The server does not connect: Check that the URL is exactly
https://mcp.browserbase.com/mcp, the selected transport is Streamable HTTP, and the client supports it. Save the configuration and refresh the MCP connection. - Authentication fails: Confirm the API key is valid and that the bearer header is formatted as
Authorization: Bearer YOUR_BROWSERBASE_API_KEY. If your client uses the alternate header, usex-bb-api-key. Use the deprecated query-parameter fallback only when the client cannot send headers. - The tool list is missing or stale: Refresh the client and inspect the current tools again. Compare the result with the official setup page, which names
start,end,navigate,act,observe, andextract. - The agent says
browserbase_screenshotis unavailable: That is consistent with the v3 removal. Check the current deployed version for a documented replacement rather than retrying the removed name. - The agent reaches the page but cannot produce an image: Navigation is not proof that screenshot capture is available through the connected MCP tools. Verify a screenshot tool and its schema in the live tool list; if none is documented, use a separate screenshot method.
