How to Capture a Webpage as an Image with a Browser Extension

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture an entire webpage, use your browser’s built-in full-page tool when available, or install a scrolling screenshot extension. Microsoft Edge can capture and annotate a full page with Ctrl+Shift+S; Firefox Screenshots and Firefox DevTools can save full-page PNG images. Chrome users generally need an extension that scrolls through the page and stitches the viewport images together.

What a full-page webpage image contains

A normal screenshot records only the pixels currently visible in your browser window. A full-page screenshot includes content below the fold by scrolling the page or using the browser’s rendering tools. The result is one tall image that can be saved as PNG or JPEG, or sometimes exported as a PDF.

Before capturing, wait for fonts, images, videos, cookie dialogs and lazy-loaded sections to finish loading. Keep the page at the intended zoom level and close personal tabs or overlays. If the page contains private information, plan to crop or redact it before sharing.

Use Edge’s built-in full-page screenshot

Edge includes Screenshot, so no extension is required for a basic capture. Microsoft describes it as a way to “Turn anything on the web into a shareable image with Screenshot in Microsoft Edge.”

  1. Open the webpage in Microsoft Edge.
  2. Press Ctrl+Shift+S (Windows) or open the browser menu and choose Screenshot.
  3. Select Capture full page.
  4. Let Edge render the page, then use its markup tools if you need to draw, highlight or crop.
  5. Choose the option to copy the result or save it to your device.

For a page with continuously changing content, stop animations or wait until the layout settles before pressing the shortcut. Fixed headers can appear more than once in a stitched image; inspect the output before publishing.

Capture a full webpage in Firefox

Firefox Screenshots

Mozilla says Firefox can capture “visible parts of web pages, or even full web pages,” then copy or save the image. The downloaded file uses PNG format and includes the date, time and page title in its filename.

  1. Open the page in Firefox.
  2. Right-click an empty area and select Take Screenshot (or open the page actions menu and choose the screenshot command).
  3. Choose Save full page.
  4. Preview the image, then download or copy it.

Firefox DevTools

Firefox DevTools also provides a full-page screenshot command. Open DevTools with F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I, open the command search, and run the full-page screenshot option. Firefox saves the resulting image in your Downloads directory. This route is useful when the regular context-menu command is unavailable or when you are already inspecting responsive layouts.

How to capture a webpage as an image with a browser extension

Extensions are useful when you want one-click scrolling and stitching, annotation, redaction, or several export formats. The exact labels differ, but the workflow is usually the same.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the page. Open the target URL, dismiss consent banners and popups when possible, and scroll once through important sections so lazy-loaded images begin rendering.
  2. Install from the official store. Use your browser’s official extension marketplace. Check the permissions, developer name, update history and privacy policy. Pin the extension’s toolbar icon for quick access.
  3. Start a full-page capture. Click the icon and choose Full page, Entire page or the equivalent. The extension normally scrolls the document and stitches viewport captures.
  4. Review the stitched image. Look for repeated sticky navigation, missing embedded frames, blank lazy-loaded areas, clipped fixed-position dialogs and discontinuities where the page changed while it was being captured.
  5. Edit and export. Crop edges, blur credentials or personal data, add arrows or notes, then export as PNG or JPEG. Choose PDF only when a document layout is more useful than an image.

Do not assume an extension’s privacy statement applies to every version or browser. For example, FullPage Capture’s Chrome listing says processing is local and that it requires no account or network requests; those are vendor statements, so verify the current listing and permissions yourself.

Extensions worth comparing

Tool Best fit What to check
GoFullPage Simple full-page capture from a browser toolbar The vendor says it is available for Chrome, Edge and Firefox; confirm current store availability and any premium limits.
Awesome Screenshot Capture plus annotation, sharing and editing workflows Its official help covers Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari extensions; review current permissions and account requirements.
FullPage Capture Scrolling capture with image and PDF export The Chrome listing advertises PNG/JPEG, PDF, annotation and crop; verify the present privacy and export behavior.

Compare extensions on capture scope (visible viewport, selected element or complete page), handling of long and dynamic documents, PNG/JPEG/PDF output, annotation and redaction, supported browsers, and whether page data leaves your device. Native tools avoid installation; extensions add repeatable controls and editing features.

How to save a webpage screenshot as PNG or JPG

PNG

PNG preserves sharp text and interface edges without lossy compression. Use it for documentation, bug reports, UI comparisons and screenshots containing small type. Firefox’s built-in full-page download is PNG.

JPG

JPEG usually creates a smaller file, which is convenient for photographs or quick sharing. Compression can soften text and introduce artifacts around high-contrast edges, so inspect the result at 100 percent before using it in technical documentation.

Choose the format in the extension’s export dialog, or export as PNG first and convert a copy if your destination requires JPG. Keep the original untouched so you can re-edit or redact it later.

How to screenshot an entire webpage reliably

Dynamic and lazy-loaded content

Pages that load content on scroll may produce blank sections. Wait for network activity to settle, scroll through the page once, or use an extension option that waits between segments. A page that changes while being stitched can show duplicated or missing content; temporarily pause carousels and animations when the site permits.

Sticky headers and fixed widgets

A fixed header, chat bubble or floating promotion can be captured in every viewport segment. Hide the element with the extension’s selector tool if available, or dismiss it before starting. If the extension supports an element selector, capture only the article or component you need.

Frames, protected pages and very long documents

Cross-origin iframes, canvas applications, authentication walls and bot checks may not render completely. A full-page extension cannot bypass permissions or a login. Capture the accessible page after signing in, or ask the site owner for an export. For extremely long pages, check memory use and divide the work into meaningful sections when one giant image becomes impractical.

Privacy and publishing checklist

  • Remove account names, email addresses, tokens, order numbers and internal URLs.
  • Dismiss consent dialogs and chat windows unless they are the subject of the screenshot.
  • Blur faces, customer records and other personal information before exporting.
  • Check browser extensions’ permissions and data-handling statements.
  • Open the saved file independently to confirm the bottom of the page, text sharpness and image loading.
  • Keep a redacted copy separate from the original source capture.

Troubleshooting full-page captures

The result contains only the visible viewport

You probably selected a visible-area command. Reopen the tool and choose Capture full page, Save full page or Entire page. In Chrome, install or enable an extension that explicitly supports scrolling capture.

Images or sections are blank

Lazy loading, slow requests or blocked third-party resources are common causes. Wait longer, scroll through the page first, disable aggressive content blocking for that site, and recapture. If the page requires interaction, perform it before starting.

Headers repeat or content is duplicated

Fixed-position elements are being painted in every segment. Hide the selector, dismiss the widget, or use a native browser capture that handles the page differently. Crop the repeated strip only after confirming no real content was removed.

The extension will not run

Some pages restrict extension access, including browser-internal URLs, PDF viewers and pages opened in private windows. Test an ordinary HTTPS page, grant the minimum requested site permission, or use Edge Screenshot or Firefox Screenshots instead.

The saved file is too large

Use JPEG for photographic pages, crop to the relevant element, reduce the browser scale before capture, or export separate sections. Do not reduce quality until small text remains readable.

Or skip the browser setup

For repeatable captures in scripts or CI, ScreenshotNeo returns a webpage image or PDF from one GET request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner like a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; each step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.

See the complete parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A cURL request:

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

ScreenshotNeo also offers full-page and element capture, dark mode, device presets or custom viewports, retina scale, PDFs with paper and page controls, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, selector hiding, request blocking, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, selectable-TTL caching, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.

Which method should you choose?

  • Use Edge or Firefox native capture for an occasional, local screenshot without installing anything.
  • Use an extension when you need repeated one-click scrolling, annotation, redaction or several export formats.
  • Use ScreenshotNeo when captures must run from code, handle consent clutter consistently, provide billing verdicts, or be operated by an AI agent through MCP.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I capture a full webpage without an extension?

Yes. Edge has Screenshot with Capture full page, and Firefox offers Save full page through Firefox Screenshots or its DevTools command.

Why is my full-page screenshot cut off?

The page may have lazy-loaded content, an extension access restriction, a fixed layout, or a capture that selected only the visible viewport. Wait for rendering, choose the full-page command and inspect the extension’s permissions.

Should I use PNG or JPG for a webpage?

PNG is usually clearer for text and interface elements. JPG can be smaller, but compression may soften small type.

The Bottom Line

Use a native Edge or Firefox command for occasional captures, an extension for editing and repeatable scrolling, and ScreenshotNeo when you need automated, clean webpage images.
