Set print rules in your stylesheet, wait until the page is ready, generate the PDF, and inspect the result for page breaks and clipped content.
Generate a PDF with print CSS in Puppeteer
This Node.js example navigates to a page and saves the generated PDF. Replace the URL and adapt the readiness condition to the site you are capturing.

});Page.pdf() returns PDF data, and Puppeteer’s guide describes navigating before generating the file. Font loading is awaited by default during PDF generation. The example’s networkidle2 navigation condition is illustrative: pages with persistent network activity, lazy-loaded content, authentication, or client-side rendering may need a different wait strategy. Prepare print CSS and page layout
Print media is active when Puppeteer or Playwright generates a PDF by default, so @media print rules apply without an extra media-selection step. Use @page to define page dimensions and margins, then test the actual PDF: CSS intent does not guarantee that long content, tables, or images will paginate exactly as expected.

}These declarations are a starting point, not a rendering guarantee. Page size, margins, browser behavior, font and image loading, content length, and overflow all affect pagination. Inspect representative output for clipped text, awkward page breaks, and missing assets.
Keep or change print media
For print-specific layout, leave the default print media selection in place. If the PDF should instead reflect screen CSS, explicitly select screen media before generating it. Both APIs document this option: Puppeteer and Playwright.

Account for printed colors
PDF generation may modify colors for printing by default. If exact colors matter to the design, the documentation for both APIs points to the CSS property -webkit-print-color-adjust. Check the output rather than assuming on-screen colors will carry over unchanged. See Puppeteer’s PDF options and Playwright’s Page API.
Use Playwright’s PDF method
Playwright’s page.pdf() also generates a PDF buffer using print CSS by default. The basic flow is to navigate, wait for the page state your application needs, and call the method with PDF options. Its API reference documents screen-media selection as an alternative to the default print media.

The documented behavior supports comparing the two APIs on media selection and PDF return values: Puppeteer returns PDF data, while Playwright returns a PDF buffer. The references do not establish a speed, cost, reliability, or fidelity winner, so choose based on your existing browser-automation stack and validate the pages you need to render.
Make page readiness explicit
A navigation event alone may not mean that all content intended for the PDF is present. For pages that load content after navigation, wait for an application-specific selector or readiness signal before generating the file. Consider how the page handles lazy images, authenticated content, and requests that remain open in the background. Then verify that fonts, images, and dynamically inserted material appear in the PDF.

Troubleshoot PDF output
- Print rules do not appear: Confirm the stylesheet is loaded and the rules are inside
@media print. If you selected screen media before generation, print-only rules will not be the active styling. - Content is missing: Wait for the relevant page content or selector before calling the PDF method. Check whether lazy-loaded material requires scrolling or an application-specific trigger.
- Text or images are clipped: Review the PDF’s page size, margins, overflow, and page-break rules. Adjust the CSS and inspect another generated file.
- Colors differ from the browser: Print output may alter colors. Use
-webkit-print-color-adjustwhere exact color is needed, then verify the resulting PDF. - The navigation wait never completes: Some pages maintain ongoing requests. Choose a readiness condition suited to the page rather than relying on a network-idle condition that may not occur.
