How to Capture a Webpage After Web Fonts Load

A reliable browser screenshot waits for the target content first, then awaits document.fonts.ready. For typography-critical captures, load the intended face explicitly and handle failures.

In Playwright or Puppeteer, wait for the page content you intend to capture, then await document.fonts.ready before taking the screenshot. If a particular font face is essential, explicitly request it with document.fonts.load() and handle a failed load. The readiness promise means font loading and related layout have settled; it does not prove that the intended font loaded or was used instead of a fallback.

Playwright: wait for fonts before capturing

Wait for the page and the target content first. Then evaluate the browser’s font readiness promise in the page before calling the screenshot method:

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.locator('#capture-area').waitFor({ state: 'visible' });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' });

Replace url and #capture-area with the page URL and a selector for content that should appear in the image. If capturing the entire page, wait for an appropriate page-specific content condition instead of a target locator. Playwright documents navigation states and screenshot capture in its Page API.

Request a particular font explicitly

When typography depends on a specific family, weight, style, or character subset, ask the browser to load that face before capture:

await page.evaluate(async () => {
  await document.fonts.load('500 16px "Brand Sans"', 'Screenshot text 123');
  await document.fonts.ready;
});
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' });

Use a CSS font shorthand that matches the face actually used by the page, and representative text from the region being captured. The optional text argument to load() selects faces whose Unicode range contains at least one character from the text; it does not verify coverage of every individual glyph. If the promise rejects, surface the failure or save a diagnostic rather than treating the preferred font as ready. See MDN’s FontFaceSet.load() documentation.

Puppeteer: use the same browser-side wait

Puppeteer can await the same document.fonts.ready promise through page.evaluate(), then capture the page:

await page.goto(url, { waitUntil: 'load' });
await page.waitForSelector('#capture-area', { visible: true });
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await page.screenshot({ path: 'capture.png' });

For one element rather than the whole page, wait for the element and use its ElementHandle.screenshot() method after the font wait. Puppeteer documents both page and element capture in its Screenshots guide. Choose Playwright or Puppeteer based on the browser/runtime setup and project already in use; neither API pattern is a universal winner.

What font readiness does—and does not—guarantee

MDN describes document.fonts.ready as resolving once “the document has completed loading fonts, layout operations are completed, and no further font loads are needed.” That makes it a useful settling signal before capture, but not a verification that a named preferred font successfully rendered. A missing resource, mismatched CSS family or weight, or absent character subset can still leave the page displaying fallback typography. See MDN’s FontFaceSet.ready reference.

  • Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.

Navigation milestones are separate signals. load or DOMContentLoaded do not themselves establish that fonts and layout have settled. Likewise, a fixed sleep is not a reliable substitute for waiting on the font condition. Wait for client-rendered content that triggers font use, then wait for fonts. Playwright’s current page documentation discourages using networkidle for tests in place of readiness assertions.

Make captures visually repeatable

Font readiness is only one variable in screenshot consistency. When comparing images or generating repeatable output, keep the relevant rendering inputs stable:

  • Animation behavior, using screenshot animation options where appropriate

Disabling animations can reduce motion-related differences, but it does not replace the font wait. Dynamic content, images, timers, and browser rendering differences can still change a capture.

Troubleshoot fallback fonts or a stalled wait

  • The screenshot uses a fallback family: Check the rendered element’s computed family, weight, and style against the declared face. Confirm the font resource can load and that the needed character subset is available. Call document.fonts.load() for a critical face and handle rejection.
  • The page is client-rendered: Wait for the component or text that causes the font to be used before awaiting document.fonts.ready.
  • The wait appears to hang: Check browser and automation-library versions and inspect font requests and page errors. A Playwright issue opened September 29, 2026 reports a Linux WebKit 1.63.0 screenshot timing out while “waiting for fonts to load”; the same setup’s 1.60.0 control succeeded. Intermediate versions were not bisected and the cause was not identified, so this is a narrow reported case, not evidence that all WebKit captures fail. See Playwright issue #42986.
  • The whole page is captured but a component is missing: Wait for that actual component state before waiting for fonts; navigation completion alone does not ensure it has rendered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does `document.fonts.ready` mean every web font loaded successfully?

No. It signals that font loading and associated layout have settled, not that a particular preferred face loaded or rendered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I use `networkidle` or a fixed sleep instead?

Neither is a substitute for a font readiness condition. Wait for the content you need, then await `document.fonts.ready`.
