What this Selenium screenshot captures
Selenium’s Python WebDriver can navigate to a URL and save a PNG of the current browser window. Its API describes the method as saving “a screenshot of the current window to a PNG image file.” That does not establish that the method captures the full page when content extends below the viewport. The capture reflects what the browser displays at the time the screenshot is taken. If the important content loads asynchronously, wait for a meaningful page condition before saving rather than assuming that navigation alone means the page is ready.
Install Selenium and prepare the script
The Selenium Python client documentation surfaced for this guide identifies Selenium 4.49.0, Python 3.10 or newer, and installation with pip. Versions and browser support can change; check the current Selenium installation guide when setting up a new environment. Use a virtual environment to keep the project’s dependencies separate.

Install a supported browser, such as Chrome. Selenium Manager handles driver setup for most supported browsers and platforms when WebDriver starts. If that does not work in your environment, see the troubleshooting section.

Write a daily capture script
Save this as daily_screenshot.py. Replace the example URL and selector with the page and content you care about. The script creates its output directory, uses an absolute path, names the PNG with the run date, waits for the selected element, checks the screenshot method’s return value, and always quits the WebDriver session.

capture()This is an example to adapt, not a tested capture of a particular site. The selector h1 is only a simple readiness condition: use an element that indicates the content you need is present. Selenium’s waits documentation explains explicit waits and conditions for asynchronous pages.
Choose the readiness condition carefully
Replace READY_SELECTOR with a CSS selector for the heading, chart, table, or other element that must appear in the image. A condition-based wait proceeds when the condition becomes true, up to the timeout. It is generally more dependable than an arbitrary fixed sleep because it is tied to the page state the capture depends on.

A visible element does not guarantee that every image, animation, overlay, or other page-specific detail has finished changing. If the screenshot must include such content, identify and wait for the relevant state; page behavior varies, so inspect the target site and adjust the condition. The Selenium method described here captures the current window, not a guaranteed full-page image.
Keep daily files instead of overwriting them
The date-based filename preserves one file per calendar day and avoids silently replacing yesterday’s screenshot. The output directory is resolved relative to the script, so a scheduler starting from a different working directory will still write to the same location. If you need multiple captures in a day, include a time in the filename and decide how long to retain old files.
Schedule the script to run once a day
For a job that should start, capture, and exit once daily, use an operating-system scheduler. Set the schedule in the time zone you intend and make sure the computer is available at the scheduled time. The source-backed Windows instructions below use Task Scheduler; exact behavior when a machine is offline or whether a missed run is caught up depends on task settings and was not established here.

Save the task and run it manually once from Task Scheduler. Confirm that a dated PNG appears in the script’s
screenshotsdirectory, then check the task’s last-run result if it fails.
Microsoft documents daily triggers in its Task Scheduler daily trigger example. Menu wording may differ across Windows versions.
When a Python scheduler makes sense
An in-process scheduler is an alternative if a Python process is meant to stay running continuously. The schedule package documents a daily job such as schedule.every().day.at("10:30").do(job) with a loop that calls schedule.run_pending() and sleeps. This approach requires the process to remain alive; it will not run while that process is stopped. The package documentation also notes limitations, including that long-running jobs may need to run off the main thread for stable timing. See the schedule package documentation (version 1.2.0 in the documentation surfaced for this guide).
For a once-a-day task that should not depend on a persistent Python process, prefer the operating-system scheduler. Current official Linux and macOS scheduler instructions were not established for this guide, so verify the relevant platform documentation before using cron or launchd commands.

Troubleshoot common failures
The browser or driver will not start
Confirm that a supported browser is installed and that the task runs under the same account and environment where Selenium was installed. Selenium Manager handles driver setup for most supported platforms, but restricted networks, permissions, or unusual browser installations can prevent it from working. Check the Selenium installation guide and configure the browser or driver explicitly if needed.
The page opens, but the screenshot misses the content
A successful driver.get() does not prove that dynamic content is ready. Wait for a page-specific element or state, and make sure the selector matches the page. If the required content is below the visible browser window, the current-window screenshot method described here does not establish full-page capture; use a browser-specific method only after checking that browser’s current Selenium API documentation.
No PNG appears in the output folder
Check that the directory is writable and that the scheduled task is running the expected script and interpreter. The example creates the destination directory and uses an absolute path. Selenium’s screenshot method returns False on an I/O error; the example turns that into an explicit exception rather than reporting success.
The task works manually but fails on its daily schedule
Set the interpreter path to the virtual environment’s Python executable, use the full script path, and set the task’s working directory where appropriate. Scheduler runs may use a different account, permissions, environment, and working directory from an interactive shell. Run the task from Task Scheduler and inspect its last-run status as well as the script output.
Reliability and cost considerations

Browser resources: Each capture starts a browser session and quits it in a
finallyblock. If the job is moved into a long-running service, retain that cleanup so failures do not leave browser processes behind. -
Timing: Condition-based waits reduce dependence on guessed delays, but the correct condition depends on the target page. Choose a timeout that allows for ordinary load variation without making a failed run hang indefinitely.

Storage: Dated images accumulate. Decide whether to retain all daily PNGs or periodically remove older files; the example does not delete prior captures.

Missed runs: A scheduled job needs an available host and a configured scheduler. Catch-up behavior after downtime was not established here; check the scheduler’s settings for the operating system you use.

Yes. Add hours, minutes, or seconds to the datetime format in the filename if you may run more than once per day.
