Use the website’s own consent controls, verify the choice took effect, then capture the page. With Playwright, the essential screenshot call is await page.screenshot({ path: 'screenshot.png' });. If the capture happens in a later browser context, save and restore the relevant browser state first—but do not assume that cookies and local storage cover every way a site stores preferences. A screenshot records what the page looked like; it does not, by itself, prove that the site handled consent lawfully or show all related processing.
Choose the browser state you need to document
Decide whether you are recording a first visit, a visitor who has just made a choice, or a returning visit with a previously saved choice. Those are different test conditions. Playwright browser contexts are isolated sessions, so a fresh context helps prevent state from an earlier run from silently changing a first-visit test. A context initialized with saved storage is useful for a returning-visitor test.

- First visit: start with a clean context and record the consent interface as it appears.
- After a new choice: interact with the consent interface, verify the result, and capture that resulting view.
- Returning visitor: restore saved state in a new context, then verify the page reflects the intended choice before capturing.
Do not inject a guessed cookie or local-storage value to simulate consent. Sites use different controls and storage schemes; setting an assumed value can bypass the site’s own logic and misrepresent what a visitor did.
Make the choice through the site’s consent interface
- Open the target page in the browser context selected for the test.
- Locate the consent controls the site actually renders. Choose the intended action—accept, reject, or adjust purposes—through that interface. There is no universal button label, selector, cookie name, or local-storage key.
- Wait for a site-specific sign of success. The banner may disappear, a preference indicator may change, or expected storage may appear. Choose a check that fits the target site; do not treat merely dismissing a banner as proof the choice was saved.
- Capture only after the page reaches the intended post-choice state.
For a real site, replace the illustrative selector and confirmation below with controls and checks verified against that site. This Playwright JavaScript example assumes a site with an accessible button named “Reject optional cookies” and a banner whose disappearance is the chosen confirmation. Those labels are examples, not universal selectors.

})();The confirmation selector above is also illustrative. If the site confirms a choice in another way, assert that observable state instead. A saved preference and an affirmative check of the page’s resulting state answer different questions: the first concerns persistence, the second whether the intended view appeared.

Save and restore the choice for a later capture
Playwright’s browser-context storage-state facility can save and restore cookies and local storage. Current API documentation also describes optional IndexedDB capture. The site may use another mechanism: in particular, session storage requires separate handling in Playwright’s authentication guidance. Inspect how the target site stores its choice rather than assuming one storage file preserves everything.

If the target relies on session storage, use a deliberate save-and-restore approach for that state; Playwright’s authentication guide shows custom handling. Playwright’s WebStorage API documentation covers access to local and session storage for the current origin.
Storage-state files can contain session or authentication material that could be used to impersonate an account. Treat them as sensitive, inspect them before sharing, and do not commit them to a repository. A consent-only state may be less sensitive, but its contents still deserve review.

Capture the viewport, full page, or a specific element
Choose the screenshot scope based on what the evidence needs to show. A viewport capture records the visible screen; a full-page capture includes content beyond the current viewport; an element capture focuses on a particular page region.

Make visual comparisons repeatable
A single screenshot captures an appearance; it is not a comparison test. For a visual-regression baseline, keep the browser, operating system, viewport, and other rendering conditions consistent, and use a screenshot assertion. Playwright notes that rendering can vary with host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Be explicit in the test record about the consent condition (first visit, newly chosen, or restored), the capture scope, and the environment. That makes a later pixel difference easier to interpret: it may reflect a changed page, a changed consent state, or a changed rendering environment.
A screenshot is one part of consent evidence
A screenshot shows rendered appearance at a moment in time. It does not establish by itself that a website’s consent handling was lawful, that the choice was properly stored, or that all relevant processing behavior was captured. If the task requires broader evidence, consider whether storage snapshots or network records are relevant in addition to the image.
The European Commission’s Your Europe business guidance says cookies requiring consent must not be set when the webpage is first opened, that consent should be specific to purposes, and that withdrawal should be as easy as acceptance. Its citizen guidance describes a clear action such as selecting “yes” as an example of consent and lists information people should receive before deciding, including purposes, retention, recipients, and rights. The EDPB Guidelines 05/2020 on consent under Regulation 2016/679 are a relevant named consent-guideline publication. These general sources do not establish the legal outcome for an unidentified website.

The EDPB’s 2023 cookie-banner taskforce report discusses the boundary between ePrivacy rules for storing or accessing information on terminal equipment and the GDPR framework for subsequent processing. It also discusses banners with an accept button and an access-to-options route but no reject button. That context is not proof that every interface of that kind has the same legal outcome.

- The consent banner appears when it should not: confirm that the returning-visitor context was created with the intended saved state, and check whether the site uses session storage or another mechanism not included in the saved state.
- The banner disappears but the choice is uncertain: wait for a more meaningful site-specific confirmation, such as a changed preference indicator or expected storage state. A hidden banner alone may not establish that the intended choice was saved.
- The consent control cannot be found: inspect the controls rendered by the target page and use an accessible role or another verified locator. Do not reuse an assumed selector from a different site.
- The restored state does not reproduce the earlier result: check which storage mechanism the site uses, whether the saved state belongs to the correct origin, and whether a fresh page load or site-specific wait is needed before asserting the state.
- The screenshot differs between runs: compare browser version, host OS, viewport, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode; stabilize the environment before treating pixel differences as page changes.
- The state file is about to be shared or committed: inspect it for cookies, authentication headers, or other sensitive session data first.
