How to Capture a Specific Element with Urlbox

Use a CSS selector with Urlbox’s selector option to capture one page element. Learn how to find the selector, wait for late-loading elements, and avoid a misleading viewport fallback.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture one element with Urlbox, pass its CSS selector in the render request’s selector option. In Chrome, use DevTools to copy the selector, then include it in your Urlbox API or CLI command. If the selector might not exist when the page first loads, wait for it and consider making a missing selector fail rather than silently returning a viewport screenshot.

Find the element’s CSS selector

  1. Open the target page in Chrome and right-click the element you want to capture, then choose Inspect.
  2. In DevTools’ Elements tab, right-click the inspected element and choose Copy > Copy selector.
  3. Check that the copied selector identifies the intended element. If it is overly specific or depends on changing page structure, use a stable ID, class, or other selector that matches the target reliably.

Urlbox’s single-element screenshot guide demonstrates passing a selector such as #element-to-screenshot.

Capture the element with the Urlbox API

Add the CSS selector as the selector render option in your Urlbox request. The documented example uses a URL and selector in a synchronous API request:

{
  "url": "example.com",
  "selector": "#element-to-screenshot"
}

Use your normal Urlbox API request format and credentials, adding these render options. The exact request endpoint and authentication details are not reproduced here; see Urlbox’s element screenshot guide and screenshot API page.

Replace the selector with the one copied from DevTools. The CLI’s rendering options are documented at Urlbox CLI rendering.

Handle elements that appear late

A selector can be correct yet not match at the moment the page is first rendered—for example, if a script inserts the target after initial loading. Urlbox’s options reference documents wait_for to wait for a selector and wait_timeout to set the waiting duration. Set the wait for the page’s actual behavior; the documentation does not establish one delay that works for every site.

Consult the Urlbox render options for the exact accepted values and request syntax. Waiting for the target is different from capturing a full page; it addresses when the selected element becomes available.

Choose what happens if the selector is missing

By default, Urlbox takes a normal viewport screenshot if it cannot find the requested selector. That fallback can look like a successful capture even though the requested element was not captured. Set fail_if_selector_missing=true when a missing target should make the render fail instead. This is especially useful in automated workflows where a viewport image could otherwise be mistaken for the intended element image. The behavior is described in the render options reference.

Element capture is not full-page capture

Use selector when the goal is a screenshot of one element. Urlbox’s full_page option is for a whole scrollable page, not a substitute for selecting an element. Its screenshot documentation says stitch is the default full-page mode and native is a faster alternative that may not work as well on every site. These full-page settings are separate from element selection; see Urlbox screenshots documentation.

Troubleshoot a wrong or missing capture

  • You got the whole viewport. The selector may not have matched. By default, Urlbox falls back to a viewport screenshot; enable fail_if_selector_missing=true if you need a hard failure.
  • The selector works in DevTools but not in the render. The page may add the element after its initial load. Use wait_for and a suitable wait_timeout, then verify the selector against the rendered page.
  • The wrong element was captured. Review the copied selector and make it more specific or more stable so it uniquely identifies the intended element.
  • You intended to capture the entire page. Use Urlbox’s full_page option instead; selector-based element capture and full-page capture solve different problems.

Urlbox documents these selector and fallback behaviors in its render options and element screenshot guide.

ScreenshotNeo can capture a page with one GET request and also supports capturing a single element by CSS selector. It removes cookie and consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server includes tools for AI agents, and 1,000 screenshots a month are free with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.

For a full-page shot, the one-call request looks like this; change the URL and add the element selector as described in the ScreenshotNeo docs:
